The workers who brought the girl to the orphanage(孤儿院) knew little about her. The street where they found her had been her home for many years. Her parents were unknown. They left her long ago. At the orphanage, the girl, like all the children there, was taught to read and write. While she was studying at the orphanage, she learned something else－to be independent(独立). At twenty-one, she left the orphanage and began to work as a secretary. And then, in 1975, while she was still working as an ordinary secretary, something special happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong Competition and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now her name, Mary Cheung, was known to everybody.
Mary entered the competition because she wanted to show that orphanage girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then into business as a manager. When she was
working as a manager, she had trouble with her reports. “My English just wasn’t good enough.” she says. Luckily, she had a boyfriend (who later became her husband) to help her.
Mary studied management(管理) at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own business in 1985. But she did not stop developing herself. She then studied at the University of Hong Kong. Since 1987, she had spent a lot of time on photography(摄影). She has held several exhibitions of her works in many places－China, New Zealand and Paris. She still found time, however, to work on TV, write for newspapers and support her family.

We have always been interested in the moon. 2, 000 years ago, people already knew it moves around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.
When scientists could use telescopes to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on the earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that h ad been caught in the earth’s gravity millions of years earlier.
In 1969, moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of the earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 billion years ago, something about the size of Mars hit the earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
In the future, even though our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it.

I’m Cathy Brown. I am now working for the Sunshine Travel Service in Changsha.
I have just come back from Taiwan, the biggest island of China. It is in the Pacific Ocean(太平洋) to the east of Fujian.
Last week, I took a group of French holiday-makers for a week’s trip to Taiwan. We traveled all around the island. There are a lot of places of interest. My favorite is Sun Moon Lake. You may ask why people call it so. If you fly high up over the lake and look down from your plane, you will find the answer yourself. In the middle of this lake, there is a small island that is called Pearl Island because it looks like a pearl. On one side of Pearl Island the lake looks like a sun, and on the other side it looks like a moon. That is why people call it the Sun Moon Lake.
There are many mountains around this lake. One of the nearest is Mount Ali. We stayed there for three days. We also had a dancing party with Gaoshan people. On our first day there we went to the mountain and watched the sun going down slowly in the west. On our last day we got up early and saw the beautiful sunrise(日出).
Taiwan is a wonderful place which is known for beautiful scenery.

Scientists have always wanted to know more about the other worlds in space. Years ago they knew a lot about the moon. They knew how big it is and how far away it is from the earth. But they wanted to know more about it. They thought and thought. At last they found the only way to know more was to send men to the moon.
The moon is about 384,000 kilometers away from the earth. A plane can not fly to the moon because the air reaches only 240 kilometers high above the earth. Then there is no air. But there’s something that can fly even when there is no air. That is a rocket. Rockets can fly out into space. Rockets with men in them have already reached the moon. Some rockets without men in them have flown to other parts much further than the moon in the universe. One day rockets may be able to go to any place.

Television has become one of the most important parts of our life. Some programs on TV are very educational and useful. We learn much knowledge on TV. For example, the news tells us what are happening all over the world; the ads tell us what things are good and cheap. The movies make our life colorful. But some programs are unhealthy for teenagers, and some ads are misleading. Watching TV too much is bad for our eyes, too.
We can’t change what is on TV, but we can choose what w e watch.
