二、Reading Comprehension (40 minutes)

Passage One:

The octopus (章鱼)’s reputation as a human-killer i sn’t simply an exaggeration — it is a total myth(神话). The octopus can indeed be a deadly hunter, but only of its natural prey(被掠食者). Clams(蛤), mussels(蚌), crabs(蟹), lobsters(虾)and an occasional sick or unwary fish have reason to be frightened of this multi-armed predator(肉食动物), but a person is much too large to interest even the biggest octopus. Even a giant among octopi is much smaller than most people imagine. Far from being large enough to engulf(吞没)a submarine, as monster octopi in movies have been known to do, the largest octopi, found on the Pacific coast, weigh around 110 pounds and grow to a diameter of no more than ten feet.

The hard, parrot like beak (嘴) of an octopus is not used for attacking deepsea divers(潜水者), but for cutting open crabs and lobsters. Indeed, the octopus possesses such a tiny throat that it cannot swallow large pieces of meat. It feeds instead by pouring digestive juices into its victims, and then sucking up the soupy remains. A clam

or scallop(干贝)that finds itself in the grasp of an octopus has only a short time to live. But human beings are perfectly safe. Do animals have rights? Do trees? Do humans have an obligation to behave ethically (合乎道德地) to rivers? To rocks? Viruses? The entire planet?

As this century draws to a close, these are not merely questions for abstract philosophical debate but, as Roderick Frazier Nash points out in The Rights of Nature, issues of intense interest to theologians (神学家), lawyers, legislators and even scientists. Radical environmentalists are already demanding that legal and ethical protection be extended to all of nature, and a few of them have demonstrated a willingness to fight, break the law and even die in support of this belief.

As described by Nash, the circle covered by the ethical rules governing individual and social behavior has expanded slowly and irregularly throughout history. Starting by granting rights to themselves, humans gradually enlarged the circle to include the family, the tribe, the nation and, in theory if not in practice, the entire community of human beings. When Thomas Jefferson wrote that all men were created equal and entitled to certain unalienable (不可剥夺的) rights, it was understood he was talking only about white males. Since the American Revolution, however, the right to ethical treatment has been extended, at least by law and social consensus, to include women and ethnic (民族的) minorities.

The next page in this history - the extension of ethical and legal rights to animals, plants, and the rest of the natural world - is now being written, Nash believes. For a growing number of people throughout the world but particularly in the United States, the belief is taking root.

The idea that nature has rights and is entitled to ethical consideration is not a new one. Some Eastern religions define humans as only part of a great chain of being. But in the Christian tradition of the West, man was created to master nature, not to be part of it.

However, as environmentalism has evolved as a social movement in recent years, Nash says, the concept of liberating nature from persecution by humanity has gained followers. U.S. law, he notes, provides legal protection

to animals and plants through the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammals Protection Act.

Nash points to the increasingly aggressive positions of so-called deep environmentalists and other radicals who insist that nature has intrinsic (固有的) and unalienable rights that have nothing to do with its value to people. Some of these radicals have thrown themselves before bulldozers to protect virgin forests and chained themselves to rocks on a river bank to prevent the river from being dammed.

For the most part, Nash takes no position on questions of ethical duties. Only in an epilogue (跋), does he indicate where his sympathies lie. Just as the antislavery radicals in the early part of the 19th century were scorned (嘲笑) for insisting that slaves were human beings with rights, today's radical environmentalists are often laughed at for suggesting that nature is "the latest minority deserving a place in the sun of the American liberal tradition," he says. But with the groundwork now laid for "mass participation in environmentalism," Nash believes, there is a real possibility of serious confrontation with those who profit from exploitation of the environment.

"If this situation, with its intellectual and political similarities to Americabefore the Civil War, promises once again to endanger domestic peace," Nash warns, "it is not the fault of history."

Most people think of a camel as an obedient beast of burden, because it is best known for its ability to carry heavy loads across vast stretches of desert without requiring water. In reality, the camel is considerably more than just the Arabian equivalent of the mule. It also possessed a great amount of intelligence and sensitivity.

The Arabs assert that camels are so acutely aware of injustice and ill treatment that a camel owner who punishes one of the beasts too harshly finds it difficult to escape the camel’s vengeance. Apparently, the animal

will remember an injury and wait for an opportunity to get revenge.

In order to protect themselves from the vengeful beasts, Arabian camel derivers have learned to trick their

camels into believing they have achieved revenge. When an Arab realizes that he has excited a camel’s rage, he places his own garments on the ground in the animal’s path, He arranges the clothing so that it appears to cover a man’s body. When the camel recognizes its master’s clothing on the ground, it seizes the pile with its teeth, shakes the garments violently and tramples on them in a rage. Eventually, after its anger has died away, the camel departs, assuming its revenge is complete. Only then does the owner of the garments come out of hiding, safe for the time being, thanks to this clever ruse.

In cities across the United States, old factories, schools, railroad stations and other buildings are being renovated(翻新) for new uses. City planners and private investors are finding that good buildings, no matter how old, can be remodeled for new purposes. "If you'd asked someone four or five years ago whether he'd rent an apartment in an abandoned piano factory or clothing warehouse, he' d have thought you were crazy," says a New York architect. "Today, many people are eager to do it."

Only a few decades ago, renovation was unpopular and generally far more expensive than taking down abandoned buildings and starting from the beginning. A change began in the 1990s with a number of

well-advertised projects. They included Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, where an old chocolate factory was renovated and made into shops and restaurants; Trolley Square in Salt Lake City, where an abandoned car warehouse became a shopping centre.

What caused the change? "One reason is nostalgia(怀旧)," a San Francisco builder suggests. "Maybe old is better than new, many people are saying. Feelings about preserving attractive or historic buildings have changed a great deal." A second cause is economy. The cost of tearing down an old building and constructing a new one from nothing now has risen to the point where it is often less expensive to fix a solid older stature.

Even when the costs of renovation are the same as or a bit more than the costs of putting up a new building, fixing the old building may be better, Gradually, architects and builders are developing knowledge about renovation and preservation, bringing imagination and creativity to the job.

And how can it be otherwise, when the range of knowledge is so vast that the expert himself is an ignoramus as soon as he strays away from his own specialty?

Most people, if asked to prove that the earth is round, would not even bother to produce the rather weak arguments I have outlined above.

They would start off by saying that "everyone knows" the earth to be round, and if pressed further, would become angry.

In a way Shaw is right. This is a credulous age, and the burden of knowledge which we now have to carry is partly responsible.

he called the unified field theory, a theory that could explain all the laws of nature, from the tiniest atom to the largest galaxy.

We're all used to thinking that work provides the material things of life -- the goods and services

that make possible our modern civilization.

But we are much less conscious of the extent to which work provides the more intangible, but more crucial, psychological well-being that can make the difference between a full and an empty life. Historically, work has been associated with slavery and sin and punishment.

And in our own day we are used to hearing the traditional complaints: "I can't wait for my vacation,"

"I wish I could stay home today," "My boss treats me poorly," "I've got too much work to

do and not enough time to do it."

Against this background, it may well come as a surprise to learn that not only psychologists but other behavioral scientists have come to accept the positive contribution of work to the individual's happiness and sense of personal achievement.

Work is more than a necessity for most human beings; it is the focus of their lives, the source

While it is often said that love makes the world go round, scientists take a less romantic view. To their minds, energy is the fundamental force at work. All animal life is dependent on obtaining sufficient energy from food. Deer, like other wild animals, do this through eating as much food as possible in the summer, when food resources are abundant. Any excess of energy over their current needs is deposited in the body in the form of fat. Then, when food becomes scarce in the winter, they can live off the fat. In addition, nature helps them to survive the winter by slowing down their metabolism, assisting them to pull through the cold weather. However, when the winter is particularly harsh, deer may have to draw on the fat they have built up more heavily. Under such conditions, only deer in good condition are able to survive to give birth to a new generation. In his essay George Orwell starts off by citing Bernard Shaw’s remark that people are more superstitious today than they were in the Middle Ages. They promptly accept the opinions of experts without asking any questions themselves. Obviously Shaw exaggerates just in order to prove his point that we should not always fall back on the theories of well-known authorities. Rather, we should aim at finding out some things for ourselves. By way of illustration, Orwell outlines arguments against the Flat Earth and the Oval Earth theories, thus throwing light on the fact that much of our knowledge actually rests on authority rather than on reasoning or on experiment. Finally, Orwell draws his conclusion that ours is a credulous age partly because we have such an exceptionally heavy burden of knowledge.
