The majority of us would be happy if three movies we starred in were coming out at the same time. But Ge You, 53, finds it all a bit of a burden. Ge fears air travel, which means he will have to travel thousands of kilometers by train and car to promote the movies.

Chen Kaige’s Sacrifice (《赵氏孤儿》) came out on December 4. Ge plays a doctor who saves an orphan at the cost of his own baby. He also appears as a cheat in Jiang Wen’s Let the Bullets Fly, which appears on December 16. Next com es Feng Xiaogang’s romantic comedy, If You Are the One 2 (《非诚勿扰2》), to open six days later. Ge plays a middle-aged cinematographer in search of love.

Ge is best known for playing ordinary characters. In Feng’s popular series of “new year comedies” he gives a convincing sense of “the little man up against it (处境困难)”.

Feng Xiaogang says the actor exhausts himself trying to satisfy friends. He is also very careful not to offend anyone.

Ge is a thoughtful man who pauses a lot in conversation to think over his answers. He rarely turns down a request for an autograph or picture. There was once a fan who said to him: “You wait here, I will go get a pen.” Ge actually waited for the man to return. “It was the 20,000th time for me [to sign an autograph] but it was pro bably a new experience for him,” Ge said. “The first time means a lot.”

He says he doesn’t think of himself as a star, just as a working actor. “An actor is like a worker; you do your job and go home,” he said. The old saying is never far from his mind: The higher you climb, the harder you fall.

With China’s first show of international standardized testing, students in Shanghai have surprised the world.

The test of the academic performance of 15-year-olds around the world is called the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). It is published every three years by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Chinese teenagers from Shanghai far outscored their international peers in all three subject areas: reading, math and science.

In reading—the main focus of the PISA survey—more than 19 percent of the Shanghai students gained the top two grades, almost double the number of the US students and nearly three times the average of students in major developed countries.

This is the first time that Chinese mainland has taken part in the PISA, and the results are especially stunning (令人大吃一惊的) because they are so unexpected. Only a short time ago, the “Cultural R evolution” (1966-1976) greatly affected the Chinese school system. But the tests suggest that education in China has been rebuilt as a modern and high-performance system, at least in some cities. Even the students of Finland and South Korea, who recently topped internationally in PISA, were left far behind by the Chinese students.

The stunning performance was confirmed by the results of Chinese students in Hong Kong, who came second in math and science and ranked fourth in reading. About 10,000 students from two Chinese cities, of course, can’t stand for the academic performance of a nation of more than 1.3 billion people.

The findings may force people to reconsider some of their ideas about education.

The survey suggests that girls almost everywhere read significantly better than boys, differently from math and science, where the tendency is reversed (相反的). It also found that teenagers who enjoy reading and read a novel for 30 minutes a day score better than those who don’t, or who only read comic books.

Another finding was the spectacular performance of the Asian nations. Four of the top five reading performers in the survey are Asian, with Singapore and South Korea joining Shanghai and Hong Kong at the top of the class.

“We have to see this as a wake-up call,” said Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education.

“As it stands right now,” US President Barack Obama said, “America is in danger of falling behind.”

44. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. America is in danger of falling behind Asian countries.

B. Chinese mainland took part in the PISA for the first time.

C. Chinese students topped PISA, closely followed by Finland and South Korea.

D. Boys fall behind girls in reading but do better in math and science.

46. What does the US Secretary of Education mean by “We have to see this as a wake-up call.”?

A. Asian countries are calling the US for further relationship.

B. Asian students’ good performance sets the alarm bell ringing to the US.

C. Asian students are working much harder than American students.

D. Asian students are catching up with American students.

47. We can infer from the passage that ______.

The taxi driver was confused for a second. Then he said, “Are you a wise guy or something?”

“No, my dear man, and I’m not putting you on. I admire th e way you keep cool in heavy traffic.”

“Yeah,” the driver said and drove off.

“I’m trying to put love back in New York City,” my friend said. “I believe it’s the only thing that can save the city.”

“How can one man save New York City?” I asked.

“It’s not one man. I believe I have made the taxi driver’s day. Suppose he has 20 fares. He’s going to be nice to those 20 fares because someone was nice to him. Those fares in turn will be kinder to their employees or shop-ke epers or waiters or even their own families.” He said.

“It sounds good on paper,” I admitted, “but I’m not sure it works in practice.” “Nothing is lost if it doesn’t. Tomorrow there will be another taxi driver who I can try to make happy.”

Several US companies are developing a four-person flying car for the US military.

The car, known as The Transformer (变形金刚), could run just like a four-wheel-drive jeep. But it could also become a helicopter with the push of a button during emergencies.

It could take soldiers past deadly roadside bombs , and help them escape an ambush (埋伏). It could also reduce the time required to rescue wounded soldiers from the battlefield because they would not need to wait for a medical helicopter.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) at the Pentagon (五角大楼) is putting in $65 million (435 million yuan) to develop the car. It would be able to travel 448 km, reaching a speed of around 104 km an hour on the ground and more than 240 km an hour in the air.

As it would be armored (有装甲保护的), it could protect passengers from gunfire and bombs. It could also be fitted with machineguns and cannons for attack.

The Transformer could take off and land vertically like a helicopter. It would have automatic flight controls, so it could be flown by someone who is not a professional pilot.

“We are looking to combine the advantages of ground vehicles and helicopters into a single vehicle equipped with flexibility of movement,” A DARPA spokesman said.

A US military official told the Daily Mail that the US military “takes an interest in the development of all new technology that may have the potential to help our armed forces, no matter how ambitious they may appear to be”.

The Transformer could be ready as early as 2015, according to the DARPA. It will cost about $207,000 (1,386,900 yuan)—a similar price to a Ferrari.
