Part I. Reading Comprehension (30%)

Directions:There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)

and D). You should decide on the best choice and write down the answer on the

Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

Individualism is a fundamental value in the United States. All Americans believe in the right to express their own opinion without fear of punishment. This value, however,is coming under fire in an unlikely place—the public schoo1 classroom. The issue is school uniforms.Should public school students be allowed to make individual decisions about clothing, or should a11 students be required to wear a uniform? School uniforms are the better choice for three reasons.

First, wearing school uniforms would help make students’ lives simpler. They would no longer have to decide what to wear every morning, sometimes trying on outfit(套装)after outfit in an effort to choose.Uniforms would not only save time but also would get rid of the stress often associated with this chore(琐事).

Second.school uniforms influence students to act responsibly in groups.Uniforms give students the message that school is a special place for learning. In addition, uniforms create a feeling of unity(整体)among students. For example, when students do something as a group, such as attending meetings in the auditorium(礼堂)or eating lunch in the Cafeteria(餐厅)the fact that they all wear the same uniform would create a sense of community’s. That’s more important.Statistics(数据)show the positive effects that school uniforms have on violence and absence from school. According to a Survey (调查)in Florida, incidents of school violence dropped by 50 percent, attendance and test score improved, and student suspensions (休学)declined approximately 30 percent after school uniforms were introduced.

Finally, school uniforms would help make all the students feel equal. People's standards of living differ greatly, and some people are well-off, while others are not. People sometimes forget that school is a place to get an education, not to promote a "fashion show." School uniforms make all the students look the same regardless of their financial status (经济状况)School uniforms would promote their pride and help to raise the self-esteem of students who cannot afford to wear stylish clothing.

In conclusion, there are many well-proved benefits to school uniforms for students. Studies show that students learn better and act more responsibly when they wear uniforms. Public schools should require uniforms in order to benefit both the students and society as a whole. 1. According to this passage, the author takes a _______ position on the issue of school

I recently wrote an autobiography in which I recalled many old memories. One of them was from my school days, when our ninth grade teacher, Miss Raber, would pick out words from the Reader's Digest to test our vocabulary.

Today, more than 45 years later, I always check out “It Pays to Enrich Your Word Power”first when the Digest comes each month. I am impressed with that idea, word power. Reader's Digest knows the power that words have to move people --- to entertain, inform, and inspire. The Reader’s Digest editors know that the big word isn't always the best word. Take just one example, a Quotable Quote from the February 1985 issue: “Time is a playful kitten. She creeps up on you and drinks the day like a bowl of milk.”

Nineteen words. Only two of them more than one syllable. Yet how much they convey! That's usually how it is with Reader's Digest. Small and simple can be profound.

As chairman of a foundation to restore the Statue of Liberty, I've been making a lot of speeches lately. I try to keep them fairly short. I use small but vivid words: words like “hope”, “guts”, “and faith”, “dreams”. Those are words that move people and say so much about the spirit of America.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against using big words, when it is right to do so, but I have also learned that small word can work a small miracle --- if it's the right word, in the right place, at the right time. It's a “secret” that I hope I never forget.

6. The passage is mainly about ________.

A. one of the many old memories

B. using simple words to express profound ideas

C. Reader's Digest and school education

D. how to make effective speeches

7. It seems that Reader's Digest is a magazine popular with ________

A. people of all ages

B. teenagers

C. school teachers

D. elderly readers

8. The example the author gives in the second paragraph might mean

________ .

A. a kitten spends her day playing and drinking

B. don't waste your time as a kitten does

C. time slips easily if you don't make good use of it

D. time is just like a kitten drinking milk from a bowl

9. The author's 'secret' is _________

A. to avoid using big words at any time

B. to use words that have the power to move people

C. to work a miracle by using a small word

D. to use small and simple words where possible

10.According to the author, well-chosen words can give people _______

A. hope, courage, and ideas

B. confidence, determination, and strength

C. pleasure, knowledge, and encouragement

D. entertainment, information, and power

Passage 3

The human nose has given to the language of the world many interesting expressions. Of course, this is not surprising. Without the nose, we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character. Cyrano de Bergerac said that a large nose showed a great man—courageous, courteous, manly, and intellectual.

A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose! Blaise Pascal , a French philosopher, made an interesting comment about Cleopatra’s nose. If it had been shorter, he said, it would have changed the whole face of the world.

Historically, man’s nose has had a principle role in his imagination. Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his emotions. Expressions concerning the nose refer to human weakness: anger, pride, jealousy and revenge.

In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example, to hold up one’s nose expresses a basic human feeling---pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things, and places.

The phrase, to be led around by the nose, shows man’s weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, a person who follows his nose lets his instinct guide him.

For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase to have on e’s nose put out of joint is very descriptive. The expression applies to persons who have been turned aside because of a

competitor. Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new. It was used by Erasmus in 1542.

This is only a sample of expression in English dealing with the nose. There are a number of others. However, it should be as plain as the nose in your face that the nose is more than an organ for breathing and smelling.

11.“ To hold up one’s nose” is an expression of __________

A. contempt

B. revenge

C. anger

D. jealousy

12.A man who is described as “ to have his nose put out of joint”_______

A. is happy

B. wants to smell a flower

C. is ill

D. feel hurt and rejected

13.When you say it is “ as plain as the nose on your face” you mean_______

A. “ it is easy to solve.”

B. “something looks like your nose”

C. “ it is something quite easy to understand”

D. “ there is a plain-looking nose on your face”

14.“ The nose is more than an organ of breathing and smelling” means________

A. “ the only two functions of the nose are breathing and smelling.”

B. “the nose is more important than any other organ.”

C. “ more can be said of this human organ than its function of breathing and smelling.”

D. “ no other organ function for breathing and smelling.”

15. This passage is about _______

A. the human nose as an organ for breathing and smelling.

B. the nose providing us with various expression.

C. a woman poet’s wish to have two noses.

D. interesting comments made on Cleopatra’s nose.

Calculate for a moment what could be done with even a part of those hours. Five thousand hours, I am told, are what a typical college undergraduate spends working on a bachelor's degree. In 10,000 hours you could have learned enough to become an astronomer or engineer. You could have learned several languages fluently. If it appealed to you, you could be reading Homer in the original Greek or Dostoyevsky in Russian. If it didn't, you could have walked around the world and written a book about it. The trouble with television is that it discourages concentration. Almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires some constructive, consistently applied effort. The dullest, the least gifted of us can achieve things that seem miraculous to those who never concentrate on anything. But Television encourages us to apply no effort. It sells us instant gratification(满意). It diverts us only to divert, to make the time pass without pain. Television's variety becomes a narcotic(麻醉的), nor a stimulus. Its serial, kaleidoscopic (万花筒般的)exposures force us to follow its lead. The viewer is on a perpetual guided tour: 30 minutes at the museum, 30 at the cathedral, 30 for a drink, then back on the bus to the next attraction—except on television., typically, the spans allotted arc on the order of minutes or seconds, and the chosen delights are more often car crashes and people killing one another. In short, a lot of television usurps(篡夺;侵占) one of the most precious of all human gifts, the ability to focus your attention yourself, rather than just passively surrender it. Capturing your attention—and holding it—is the prime motive of most television programming and enhances its role as a profitable advertising vehicle. Programmers live in constant fear of losing anyone's attention—anyone's. The surest way to avoid doing so is to keep everything brief, not to strain the attention of anyone but instead to provide constant stimulation through variety, novelty, action and movement. Quite
