The old Volkswagen Beetle—"The Bug"—is making a comeback. People who own them are planning to keep them forever. People who don't own them are paying high prices when they can find one for sale. It's more remarkable when you realize that VW doesn't even make them anymore!

A spokesman for Volkswagen of America says there were about five million "Bugs" on American roads in 1977. That was the last year they were shipped to America. VW estimates that about four million of them are still running and running and running.

Used car dealers say they can't keep "Bugs" on their lots these days. They feel it's because these cars have a history of reliable, inexpensive transportation. The cars average about 30 miles per gallon of gas.

But all hasn't been smooth going for the "Bugs". The heating system is poor. And since it travels very close to the ground, larger cars tend to splash it with winter's snow and mud. Some in the safety field consider the Beetle as defenseless against heavier cars. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has nothing that shows any problem with them at all.

Task 3

Directions: After reading it, you should complete the information by filling in the blanks marked 46 through 50 in no more than 3 words in the table below.

The trend towards globalization (全球化) began seriously in the early 1970s when the system of fixed exchange rates was removed. This meant that the value of currencies (货币) would now be determined by the markets instead of individual governments. Other factors contributing to the rise of globalization are new communication technologies and better transportation systems. These have enabled companies to grow into multinationals (跨国公司) — producing goods on one side of the planet and selling them on the other.

But what is really holding globalization back is the lack of labor mobility. Labor markets remain surprisingly national, even in areas like European Union (欧盟), where citizens can live and work

in any EU country. The main reasons for this are language and cultural barriers; the lack of internationally- recognized qualifications; and, in some case, strict immigration controls.

This report is about the -46- globalization.

Three factors that have contributed to the globalization are pointed out in the report. They are removal of the system of -47- fixed exchange rates , new -48- communication technologies and better transportation systems.

The lack of -49- labor mobility prevents the globalization.

Main reasons for the very national markets are the barriers in -50- language and cultural.

This familiar old noun "life", is now used widely in the phrase "get a life!", usually in a bad tone of voice like that – "Get a life, why don't you!" Well, it's said to somebody who the speaker feels is leading an unfulfilling (不充实的) life, your life is empty, dull, there's more to life than what you're doing, start living!

It can be serious, but it's usually funny. It can be used for instance to a workaholic (工作狂), or for anybody specially fond of something like a television programme, always watching a particular soap (肥皂剧), shall we say. That person might be told to "get a life".

The phrase goes back more than ten years ago. It was a US phrase in California, years and years ago, and then it became the name of a US television show. And then it became all sorts of usages around radio, television, novels, short stories-don't take things too seriously!

Jim and Emily are involved in school activities, but they too spend most of their time at home. 13 The other requirement is energy -- a lot of it. The way to make self-sufficiency work on a small scale is to resist the temptation to buy a tractor and other expensive laborsaving devices. Instead, you do the work yourself. The only machinery we own (not counting the lawn mower) is a little three-horsepower rotary cultivator and a 16-inch chain saw. 14 How much longer we'll have enough energy to stay on here is anybody's guess -- perhaps for quite a while, perhaps not. When the time comes, we'll leave with a feeling of sorrow but also with a sense of pride at what we've been able to accomplish. We should make a fair profit on the sale of the place, too. We've invested about $35,000 of our own money in it, and we could just about double that if we sold today. But this is not a good time to sell. Once economic conditions improve, however, demand for farms like ours should be strong again. 15 We didn't move here primarily to earn money though. We came because we wanted to improve the quality of our lives. When I watch Emily collecting eggs in the evening, fishing with Jim on the river or enjoying an old-fashioned picnic in the orchard with the entire family, I know we've found just what we were looking for. 但我们主要不是为了赚钱而移居至此的。我们来此居住是因为想提高生活质量。当我
