One Writer's Beginnings 1 I learned from the age of two or three that any room in our house, at any time of day, was there to read in, or to be read to. My mother read to me. She'd read to me in the big bedroom in the mornings, when we were in her rocker together, which ticked in rhythm as we rocked, as though we had a cricket accompanying the story. She'd read to me in the dining room on winter afternoons in front of the coal fire, with our cuckoo clock ending the story with "Cuckoo", and at night when I'd got in my own bed. I must have given her no peace. Sometimes she read to me in the kitchen while she sat churning, and the churning sobbed along with any story. It was my ambition to have her read to me while I churned; once she granted my wish, but she read off my story before I brought her butter. She was an expressive reader. When she was reading "Puss in Boots," for instance, it was impossible not to know that she distrusted all cats. 2 It had been startling and disappointing to me to find out that story books had been written by people, that books were not natural wonders, coming up of themselves like grass. Yet regardless of where they came from, I cannot remember a time when I was not in love with them — with the books themselves, cover and binding and the paper they were printed on, with their smell and their weight and with their possession in my arms, captured and carried off to myself. Still illiterate, I was ready for them, committed to all the reading I could give them. 当我得知故事书原来是人写出来的,书本原来不是什么大自然的奇迹,不像草那样自生 自长时,真是又震惊又失望。不过,姑且不论书本从何而来,我不记得自己有什么时候 不爱书——书本本身、封面、装订、印着文字的书页,还有油墨味、那种沉甸甸的感觉, 以及把书抱在怀里时那种将我征服、令我陶醉的感觉。还没识字,我就想读书了,一心想 读所有的书。

Unit 1 A Technological Revolution in Education

Mastering a large number of words is essential to achieving fluency in a foreign language. An unofficial, but often quoted, figure for the Cambridge First Certificate examination suggests that students with a vocabulary of less than 3,500 words are unlikely to be successful in the exam. Current research also suggests that native English speakers who have been educated up to 18 years old or beyond know at least 16000 English words. And unless you already speak a language like Spanish or German, there are no shortcuts to a large vocabulary in English; you just have to rely on diligence and dedication. Of course you can figure out from the context the meanings of some new words you come across in your reading, but more often than not you have to look them up in a dictionary in order to be clear about their accurate meanings. A practicable way to pick up new words is, perhaps, to read a lot, preferably stories that you find interesting or exciting. It often pays to read the same book over and over again: each time you read it you will learn different new words, and the familiar context helps to fix them in your mind. I don’t think it is realistic to turn to him for help. As a matter of fact, he himself is in need of help. 2.越来越多的人正在意识到与空气污染作斗争的迫切需要。 More and more people are being awakened to the urgent need of combating air pollution. 3.有明显的迹象表明一些古老的传统和价值观念不再被年轻人珍视。 There are visible signs that some of the time-honored old traditions and values are no longer cherished by the young people. 4.我们许多人觉得宇宙无限这一概念难以理解。 Many of us find the notion of a boundless universe hard to grasp. 5.因为在法律和规章中有许多漏洞,一小撮投机倒把者一夜之间暴富就没有什么奇怪了。There being so many loopholes in the laws and regulations, it is little wonder that a handful of speculators got rich overnight. 6.旅游事业的空前兴旺使这个从前只住有三百人的边境小镇突然繁荣起来。 An unprecedented boom in tourism brought sudden prosperity to the small border town, which was formerly inhabited by only three hundred people. 7.根据这一信息,该国已经具有制造核武器的能力。 In the light of this information, that country already has the capabilities to make nuclear weapons. 8.他不顾朋友们的反复警告,把所有的钱都投向了高风险企业。 Regardless of repeated warnings from his friends, he staked all his money on high-risk ventures.

2020年大一上学期英语期末复习 Diary of a fresher 大一新生日记 Sunday 星期日 1 After a wearisome expedition by car from home, we arrive at my hall of residence, and I check in. The warden gives me a set of keys and a room number. My room is five floors up, and the lift has a sign on it, "Out of order". Finally, with my mother flushed and gasping for breath, we find Room 8, I unlock the door, and we all walk in. 1 从家里驱车经过一段疲惫的旅程才到达我住的宿舍楼。我进去登记。宿舍管理员给了我一串钥匙,并告诉了我房间号。我的房间在6楼,可电梯上写着“电梯已坏”。等我们终于找到8号房间的时候,妈妈已经涨红了脸,累得上气不接下气。我打开房门,我们都走了进去。 2 After one minute, my father climbs out. The room is barely big enough for one, and certainly not big enough for the whole family. I can stretch out full-length on the bed and touch three walls without moving a muscle. 2 但爸爸马上就从里面爬了出来。这个房间刚刚够一个人住,一家人都进去,肯定容不下。我躺在床上,把全身伸直,不动弹就可以碰到三面墙。 3 Lucky my brother and my dog didn't come too. 3 幸亏我哥哥和我的狗没有一起来。 4 Later. My parents have just left. I'm here alone, hemmed in by my books and a suitcase. What do I do next? 4 后来,爸爸妈妈就走了,只剩下我孤零零一个人,周围只有书和一个箱子。接下来我该做什么呢?Monday 星期一 5 There's a coffee morning for first-year students. I meet my tutor, a lofty man with sloping shoulders, who looks determined to be affable. 5 早上,有一个为一年级新生举办的咖啡早茶会。我见到了我的导师,他个子高高的,斜肩,好像打定了主意要平易近人。 6 "Have you come far?" He peers down at me. As he speaks, his head jerks wildly from side to side, which makes his coffee spill into the saucer. 6 “你是从很远的地方来的吗?” 他居高临下地看着我问道。他边说话边晃动脑袋,咖啡都洒到杯托里了。 7 "I live not far from Edinburgh, about six hours away," I explain. 7 “我家离爱丁堡不太远,开车大约6个小时,” 我说。 8 "Splendid!" he says, and moves on to the freshman standing beside me. Still, he agonizes over what he has become at 5 4 and what he might have been. 雷克斯不再为自己哀叹,他都输了29年了,输到了在赌桌上偷零钱以满足自己嗜好的地步。尽管如此,他还是对自己54岁时的境况深感痛苦,对自己未能成就可能会成就的事业而深感痛苦。 4 Articulate, intellectual, he talks about existential philosophy, the writings of Camus and Sartre. He was once aneditor at Random House. His mind is so jam packed with tidbits about movies, television, baseball and history that card room regulars call him " Rex Trivia," a name he cherishes for the remnant of self-respect it gives him. "There's a lot of Rexes around these card rooms," he says in a whisper of resignation and sadness. 他能说会道,善于思考,喜谈存在主义哲学,谈加缪和萨特的作品。他曾是兰登出版社的 编辑。他脑子里装满有关电影、电视、棒球和历史的趣闻,因此那些纸牌室的常客都叫他“趣闻大王雷克斯”,他珍惜这个带给自己些许自尊的名字。“这些纸牌室里有不少雷克斯,”他无奈而又悲伤地低声说道。 5 And their numbers are soaring as gambling explodes across America, from the mega-resorts of Las Vegas to the gaming parlors of Indian reservations, from the riverboats along the Mississippi to the corner mini-marts selling lottery tickets.
