III.

A

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been scolded for killing farm animals. They are officially regarded as harmful and farmers try to keep

their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunters hunt a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs finally catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it. People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict rules of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people who object to fox hunting, because they think it is cruel, has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (冲突)between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the hunting of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their support. A labor Party Member of the Parliament , Mike Foster , is trying to get parliament to pass a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal (非法的). If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

36. Rich people in Britain have been hunting foxes ______________.

A. for fun

B. to limit the fox population

C. in the interests of the farmer

D. to show off their wealth

37. What is special about fox hunting in Britain?

A. It includes the use of deadly poison.

B. It is a costly event that rarely occurs.

C. The hunters have set rules to follow.

D. The hunters have to go through strict training.

38. People who object to fox hunting often interfere in the game ________________.

A. by using violence

B. by taking legal action

C. by beating the fox hunters

D. by standing in line to stop the hunting

39. It can be inferred from the passage that _______________.

A. killing foxes with poison is illegal

B. limiting the fox population is illegal

C. hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violent

D. fox—hunting often leads to confrontation between the poor and the rich.

B

Everyone gets sick of hearing, “Put on your seat belt!” But it’s good advice. People who wea r seat belts are 45 percent less likely to be killed while riding in the front seat of a car.

The US government wants more seat belt laws. It says children aged 4 to 15 are often killed in car accidents. In 2005, there were 1,627 children aged 4 to 15 killed in car accidents. More than 1,000 of those children were not wearing seat belts. If they had been wearing seat belts, 500 of those children could be alive today.

These children are too old to be in car seats, but they often sit in the back seat. Seat belt laws in many states, including Wisconsin, only require people in the front seat to wear seat belts. Children who aren’t wearing seat belts can be thrown from the car. The risk of dying in an

accident is three times greater if the person is thrown from the car.

New laws could require children aged 4 to 8 to be in booster seats in the car. Booster seats help seat belts fit children properly. Right now, only 5 percent of children aged 4 to 8 are seated in booster seats.

While parents have the choice of whether wearing seat belts or not, children are too young to make that choice. Even if you decide not to wear a seat belt, make sure your children are in seat belts and car seats. It’s the law and it will save their lives.

40. The underlined sentence “Everyone gets sick of hearing” in the first paragraph means “_____”.

A. there is something wrong with everyone’s ears

B. all people feel terrible when they hear something

C. many people don’t pay attention to wearing seat belts

D. none of the people knows it is a piece of good advice

41. More than two thirds of 1,627 children were killed because ________.

A. they wore seat belts

B. they weren’t using seat belts

C. they were not old enough to sit in the car

D. they were too careless when they were walking on the road

42. You must get your children to put on seat belts in order to ________.

A. keep them safe

B. keep them comfortable in the car seat

C. keep them awake in the car all the time

D. prevent all kinds of traffic accidents

43. What would be the best title of this passage?

A. Children Should Put on Seat Belts.

B. Too Many Traffic Accidents Happened Recently.

C. Traffic Laws Are Very Important.

D. Parents Are Important to Children.

In the past ten years, many scientists have studied the differences between men and women. And they all got the same answer: The sexes(性别) are different, because their brains are different. And this, the scientists say, makes men and women see the world in different ways.

Boys, for example, generally are better than girls at mathematical ideas. Boys also generally are better than girls at the kind of hand and eye movements necessary for ball sports. Girls, on the other hand, generally start speaking earlier than boys. And they generally see better in the dark than boys and are better at learning foreign languages.

What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides connected by nerve(神经) tracks. The left side generally is used for mathematics, speech and writing. The right side is used for artistic creation(创造) and the expression for emotions(情感). In men and women, different areas in each side of the brain develop differently. In boys, for example, it’s the area used for mathematics. In girls, it is the area used for language skills. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man’s brain are connected by a smaller nerve than the two sides of a woman’s brain are.

44. Which of the following is best to outline(概括) the article?

A. Research on the Brain

B. Differences Between Men and Women

D. Who Are Better, Boys or Girls?

A. mathematics

B. physics

C. English

D. chemistry

47. Which of the following is true?

A. The right side of brain in boys generally develops better than that in girls.

B. The left side of brain in girls generally develops better than that in boys.

C. Men are better than women in all things.

D. The area in girls used for language skills develops better.

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment in hospital may play an important part in helping patients to get better.

As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the museums and into public places, some of the country’s best artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften(使柔和)the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 national health service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have very valuable collections of present art in passages(通道), waiting areas and treatment rooms.

These recent movements first started by one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital on northeastern England during the early 1970s.

He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.

A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art! Peter Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the outpatients(门诊病人) waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of six young art school graduates.

The effect is striking. Now in the passages and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colours, playful images(形象) and restful courtyards.

The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering from an illness. A study has shown that patients who had a view onto garden needed half the number of strong pain killers compared with patients who had no view at all or only a brick wall to look at.

48. Some best artists have been gathered to _____.

A. pull down older hospitals and build up new ones

B. make the corners of the hospital building round

C. bring art into hospitals

D. help patients recover from illness

49. From this text, we’ve learnt that _____.

A. artists in Britain have completely lost their places in modern society

B. patients should be encouraged to learn art

C. hospitals in Britain should be changed into art museums

D. art is encouraged to be introduced into British hospitals

50. After the improvement of the hospital environment, _____.

A. patients no longer need drugs to kill their pains

B. patients ne edn’t buy any expensive drugs

C. patients need fewer pain killers(止疼药)when they are getting better after illness

D. patients can take fewer pills each time

Dear editor,

I’m a student of Senior One. I think my parents should buy me a computer now. As we know, computers have been of great use and will be used more and more in our daily life. Besides, computers are also helpful in our English learning. There are piles of learning software we can use.

I don’t see anything wrong with spending some time playing games. After all, we need some time to enjoy ourselves.

One more word, with computers we can get more information and get more knowledge.

Yours,

Possible version 2:

Dear editor,

I’m a student of Senior One. I don’t think my parents should buy me a computer now. Those who have computers in my class are spending too much time on computer games. In my opinion there are many other ways to enjoy myself than playing computer games. If we don’t put our hearts into our work, we might fail in the entrance examinations. Besides, if you get a computer and don’t make full use of it, it’s just a waste of money. So I insist that they don’t buy me a computer now.

Fire!” What terrible words to hear when one wakes up in a strange house in the middle of the night! It was a large, old, wooden house and my room was on the top floor. I jumped out of bed, opened the door and stepped outside the house. There was full of thick smoke. Just then the floor gave way under me and I crashed to the floor below with pieces of burning wood all around me. I saw a doorway in fire, then I put the bundle over my face and ran. My feet burned me terrible, but I got through. As I reached the cold air outside, my bundle of clothes gave a thin cry, I nearly dropped it in my surprise. Then I was in a crowd gathered in the street. A woman in a night-d ress and a borrowed man’s coat screamed as she saw me and came running madly. She was the Mayor’s wife, and I had saved her baby. 1.
