During my second year of nursing school, our teacher gave us a test. I was a hardworking student and I did well in all the subjects. I finished the questions successfully until I read the last one: ―What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?‖【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】Of course this was a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She is short and about 60 years old. She has dark hair. But how would I know her name? I had never talked with her before.

In fact, I’d never even thought about talking to her. I stared at my paper and started to feel rather guilty. Finally, I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.

Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grades. ―Absolutely,‖ the teacher said. ―In your life, you will meet many people. All are important. They deserve(值得)your attention and care, even if all you do is to smile and to say hello.‖I’ve never forgo tten that lesson. Everyone deserves my attention and I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, perhaps, the most important lesson of my life. I also learned the cleaning woman’s name was Dorothy.21*cnjy*com

One day, a man found the cocoon (茧) of a butterfly and he brought it home.

A few days later, the man saw a small hole in the cocoon. He sat and watched for several hours as a butterfly struggled(奋斗,努力) to force its body through that little hole. Then it stopped.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a knife and cut a bigger hole in the cocoon. The butterfly came out of the cocoon but it had a weak body and small, thin wings. The butterfly didn’t start to fly.21*cnjy*com

In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬行) around with a weak body and thin wings. It was never able to fly.

The man acted with kindness but he didn’t understand that he had done something wrong.

When a butterfly crawls out of the cocoon, it must struggle. The hard work of getting out of the cocoon forces the fluid(液体) from th e butterfly’s body into wings. It helps the butterfly be ready to fly. If the butterfly never has to force itself out of the cocoon, its wings never get the fluid and it can never fly.21教育名师原创作品

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If we lived our lives without any problems, we would never learn or grow. We would not be as strong as we could have been and we would never fly.

The Giant Water Lily is native to Brazil. The flower itself is white and only blooms at night. The flower is nearly the size of a soccer ball. The most interesting thing about this flower is its large leaves. The leaves can grow up to 46 centimeters in size and can hold up to 136 kilograms.

九年级英语期末综合练习试题卷(一)(第5页,共8页)

The Giant Water Lily grows in the shallow waters; in its native Brazil and in the Amazon it grows all year long. But it does not grow year round in areas where it is not a native species(物种); it only grows and reproduces in the summertime when the climate is warm. The Giant Water Lily adapts(使适应) to the environment by growing thorns (刺) on the bottom of the leaves to protect itself from fish and other predators that might want to eat it.

There are two sides to the Giant Water Lily’s effect on the living things. The negative part is that no other plant species can live under the Giant Water Lily due to its size. The water lily’s leaves are massive in size and they cover most of the surface of the water. This means that no sunlight can reach the rest of the water. Therefore no algae (海藻) can grow, and with no food source, animals that feed on algae cannot exist. On the other hand, Giant Water Lilies are very helpful to some species, for example, the Lily Trotter. The Lily Trotters walk on the leaves and obtain(获得) their food source (insects) from the water lily.

Now researchers are trying to discover more about the characteristics of this particular species.

A. there is not enough space for them to live in

B. the water Lilies’ leaves have tough thorns

C. there is no sunlight that’s needed for their living2·1·c·n·j·y

D. some animals lack food source

54. What can be inferred from the text?

55. The text most probably comes from ________.
