Homeopathy is the oldest form of complementary(互补的)and alternative medicines from Europe. It originated with the German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755—1843). He came across the cinchona, the bark of a South American tree that was used by the local people to treat fevers. Among the active ingredients in the bark is quinine(奎宁), which is still used to treat malaria. If a healthy person took cinchona, he or she would have symptoms (症状) of malaria. In 1796 and 1810, Hahnemann published essays on the theories of homeopathy: substances that cause illnesses or symptoms in people can be used in small doses as treatment. Supporters of homeopathy viewed it as a safe, patient-centered system. Hahnemann claimed he could cure any and all illnesses using homeopathic principles.

However, the Australian council sought to evaluate this claim once and for all. Their assessment was based on the analysis of 57 published systematic reviews encompassing 176 individual studies, independent evaluation of evidence provided by homeopathy interest groups and the public, and clinical practice guidelines and reports on homeopathy from other governments. Studies were only considered if they were case-controlled, meaning they compared a group of patients receiving homeopathic treatments with a control group. The council who oversaw this review consisted of experts in conventional-based medicine as well as complementary and alternative medicines. As a guideline, for a treatment to be considered effective, it must result in health improvements that cannot be explained by the placebo (安慰剂) effect, these improvements must be meaningful for a person’s overall health and the results have to be seen consistently in several studies.A draft of the report was reviewed by a group of independent experts in complementary medicine research and opened up for public consultation before it was finalized.

Eventually, the council found no reliable evidence that homeopathic treatments were effective. Studies that did find homeopathy to be effective were overall of poor scientific quality, used too few patients or lacked evidence on which to base their conclusions. Rejecting proven medical treatments in favor of homeopathy for chronic or potentially serious conditions could place people at risk. As always, use of homeopathic or other remedies should be discussed with your physician in order to make informed healthcare decisions.

62. We can learn from the passage that homeopathy is a system of medicine in which __________.

A. patients are given very small amounts of a drug that produces symptoms in healthy people

B. patients are evaluated by using very small amounts of the substance causing illness or symptoms

C. patients would have symptoms of malaria if they took cinchona

D. patients relying on homeopathy can explain their health improvements by the placebo effect

63. The underlined word “encompass ing” can most probably be replaced by __________.

A. encouraging

B. searching

C. conducting

D. including

64. When evaluating homeopathic treatments, the Australian council was most concerned about _____.

A. the source of the data to be analyzed

B. the criteria of an effective treatment

C. the objectivity and reliability of the evaluation

D. the experts involved in the evaluation 65. Which of the following reasons for the ineffectiveness of homeopathic treatments is NOT mentioned in

the passage?

A. Studies about homeopathic treatments were not scientifically accurate.

B. Hahnemann’s theories about homeopathic treatments got no response.

C. Conclusions of homeopathic treatments were short of solid evidence.

D. Blind use of homeopathic treatments might put people in danger.

When I was 16 years old and in foster care (非亲代养)in Tennessee, people told me I was unadoptable. But I desperately wanted a family. I sought the help of a judge, even the commissioner of the Department of Children’s Services, and was adopted just a week before my 18th birthday.

We have a lot t o be grateful for and this holiday season let’s not forget about the more than 415,000 youth in foster care especially older youth. These youth are the most likely to get overlooked for adoption, but they shouldn’t be. They need and deserve a family just a s much as young children do. Making an older youth a part of your family can bring just as much a joy as adopting a baby or a younger child—without all the diapers and potty training.

My adoption was life changing and probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I still remember the first gift my parents gave to me. It was a Mickey Mouse key chain with a key to their home. They told me that no matter what happened they would always love me and I’d always have a place to come home to. This is our 17th Thanksgiving together...

My first Thanksgiving with my family was a little overwhelming with lots of extended family including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. However, it’s when I realized that I would never have to spend another holiday alone and that was truly an amazing feeling.

I was always eager to spend time with my little sister, Beth. She was six when I joined the family. My dad always says he knew we were really sisters, and I was no longer a guest in the house when Beth and I h ad our first fight. Today, she’s one of my best friends, and I’m her biggest cheerleader.

There were also bittersweet Thanksgivings. One we spent in my mom’s hospital room. It was there that she helped me plan my wedding but passed away three weeks before the ceremony. My dad walked me down the aisle, and my sister was my maid of honor. Because of our bond, we were able to support each other through that challenging time and that’s what family is for—the good and bad times.

It’s nice having my dad and sister to share holidays and special occasions. But they’re even more important when it comes to the little things—like having someone to share my bad day with, celebrate my promotion at work, or help me think through a difficult decision. It’s in these moments that I just can’t imagine being alone in the world.

I’m so glad that I didn’t listen to those people who said I was unadoptable, I’d never find a family, and that I was putting myself out there for rejection. It’s a risk for older foster yout h to consider adoption. It’s an opportunity to be rejected once again. But it’s a risk they should take because life doesn’t end at 18. It’s really just beginning.

If you know someone who might consider adopting an older teen, please share my story -- and have him or her think of my family. They didn’t get to see my first steps or watch me be a pilgrim in my second grade Thanksgiving play. But they taught me so many things about life, and were there to watch me walk across the stage when I graduated from college and law school and accompanied me to the White House

last year as I was honored for my work helping foster youth.

I look forward to many more Thanksgivings with my family, and I’m eternally thankful they chose me to be a part of their family.

66. What does the author’s personal experience indicate?

A. It’s rather difficult for older youth to be adopted.

B. Older youth bring less joy than babies.

C. It’s boring having a bittersweet Thanksgiving.

D. An older youth aged 18 is too old to need a family.

67. What contributes to the author’s feeling that she can’t imagine being alone in the world?

A. The family’s giving the author a Mickey Mouse as a gift.

B. The author’s spending her Thanksgiving with her extended family for 17 years.

C. The mother’s failing to attend the author’s wedding ceremony for her severe disease.

D. The family’ s always sharing happiness and sorrow with her.

68. What does adoption for older youth really mean?

A. It means not living alone any longer.

B. It means being taken good care of by others.

C. It means being successful in career.

D. It means being loved and a sense of belonging.

69. The underlined sentence “It’s an opportunity to be rejected once again.” in Paragraph 8 means that ___.

A. older teens take the opportunity to be adopted

B. older teens are less likely to be adopted

C. older teens create the opportunity to be adopted

D. older teens are in danger of being adopted

70. What’s the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?

A. To express her appreciation for her family.

B. To show sympathy to the unadoptable older youth.

C. To appeal to more people to adopt the older youth.

D. To persuade the readers not to believe others’ words.

A selfie stick is a monopod(单脚架)used to take selfie photographs by positioning a smartphone or camera beyond the normal range of the arm. The metal sticks are typically extendable, with a handle on one end and an adjustable clamp(夹子)on the other end to hold a phone in place. Some have remote or Bluetooth controls, letting the user decide when to take the picture, and models designed for cameras have a mirror behind the viewscreen so that the shot can be lined up. In contrast to a monopod for stabilizing a camera on the ground, a selfie stick’s arm is thickest and strongest at the opposite end from the camera in order to provide better grip(控制)and balance when held high up in the air.

Homemade selfie sticks could date back as early as 1925. A photo from that year shows a man taking a photograph of himself and his wife, with the aid of a long pole which is pointed towards the camera and out of frame. Amateur box cameras of the period would not have been able to capture a self-portrait in focus when held at arm’s length, requiring photographers to use remote shutter (快门) devices such as cables or sticks.

The 1983 “Minolta Disc-7” camera had a convex mirror on its front to allow the composition of self-portraits, and its packaging showed the camera mounted on a stick while used for such a purpose. A “telescopic extender”for compact handheld cameras was patented in U.S. in 1983. Canadian inventor Wayne Fromm patented his Quik Pod in 2005, and it became commercially available in the United States the following year. Despite positive reviews for the Quik Pod over the next few years in mainstream press, the term “selfie stick” itself did not become widely used until 2014.

People attach their cell phone or camera to the end of the selfie stick, raise it in front of themselves and then make a sound or press a shutter button on the stick handle which is connected to the camera (usually using a port such as a headphone jack), or press a button on a wireless remote (often via Bluetooth), or use the camera’s built-in timer to take a photo after a number of seconds have passed. The first two methods usually adapt the device’s physical means of pressing the camera shutter such as the volume controls or the dedicated camera button of the device, which are replicated(复制)on headphones with on-cord controls, and are seen by the device as headphone devices.

The device gives more practical use in situations that require assistance for difficult photographs. It allows the user to take photographs in otherwise dangerous situations such as taking a photo over a cliff or from the door of an airplane. The device is sometimes used to take selfies that involve the photographer inside a moving vehicle.

Bans and restrictions on the use of selfie sticks have been imposed across a range of public venues(场所)generally on the grounds of safety and inconvenience to others.

Several concert venues in Australia and the United Kingdom have banned the use of selfie sticks, along with some music festivals in the United States. Organisers have cited their role in t he “illegal recording” of bands’ sets, and the inconvenience and safety issues to fellow audience members. The sticks have been banned in some museums, galleries and historical sites because of concerns about possible damage to artworks and other objects.

Theme parks including Walt Disney World Resortand Six Flags have banned selfie sticks. The sticks have always been banned on rides at Disney World for safety reasons, but after a number of instances where rides had to be stopped because of a guest pulling out a selfie stick in mid-ride, such as incidents on California Screamin’and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney issued a park-wide ban on the accessorie(配件).

第五部分:书面表达(满分25分)

It’s always emotional when a sports superstar announces his or her retirement. And when Kobe Bryant, 37, wrote a poem called Dear Basketball to say goodbye to one of the greatest, most fascinating careers in NBA history, the sadness was overwhelming.

Whether competing in the Finals or making jump shots after midnight in an empty gym, he has an unconditional love for the game. When Team USA was training in Las Vegas months before it headed to London for the 2012 Olympic Games, Bryant started his workout at 5:30 every morning in the gym until team practice began at 11:00 am. During each practice Bryant counted every single shot he hit, and he wouldn’t leave the gym until h e had hit at least 400.

This kind of hard work certainly paid off. He won an NBA MVP award, five NBA championships with the Lakers and two Olympic gold medals, making him one of the greatest players in NBA history.

One possible version:

The passage above tells us that people generally feel sad at Kobe Bryant’s retirement and that his success results from his love for basketball and years of hard work.

Kobe’s example reminds me that one’s success is based on both passion and hard work. Besides Kobe, other people such as Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs and so on have all proven that perfectly.

When I was a child, I was faced with great difficulty in learning English, especially in vocabulary. Nevertheless, with my English teacher’s patient instruction and help, I kept on practicing. In the end, my perseverance and determination paid off.

“Where there is a will, there is a way”, as the old saying goes. If we are determined to do something, we will find a way of doing it and achieve success. Without perseverance, it is impossible for us to keep trying until our dreams come true. 评分标准
