Computer programmer David Jones earns $ 35,000 a year designing new computer games, which makes him stand out among his peers. Yet he cannot find a bank to let him have a credit

card. Instead, he has been told to wait another two years until he is 18. The 16-year-old works for a small firm in Liverpool where most young people of his age are finding a job, but are also facing the same problem. David’s firm released two new games for the fast growing computer market each month. But David’s biggest headache is what to do with his money. Even though he earns a lot he cannot get a license, take out a mortgage(抵押贷款), or get credit cards.

David got his job from the Liverpool-based company four months ago, a year after his leaving school with six O-levels (the basic level of a subject taken in school) and working for some time in a computer shop. “I got the job because the people who run the firm knew I had already written some programs,” he said. David spends some of his money on records and clothes and gives his mother 50 pounds a week. But most of his spare time is spent working.

“Unfortunately, computing was not part of our studies at school,” he said, “But I had been studying it in books and magazines for four years in my free time. I knew what I wanted to do and never considered s taying further at school. Most people in this business are fairly young anyway.” David added, “I would like to earn a million and I suppose early retirement is a possibility. You never know when the market might disappear. But the thing is, I’m not truly f ree when it comes to my money issues, so I hope there would be some changes.”

24. In what way is David different from people of his age?

A. He leaves school early.

B. He lives with his mother.

C. He has a handsome income.

D. He graduated with six O-levels.

25. David is facing several problems EXCEPT ________.

A. He is too young to get a credit card.

B. He is not allowed to learn driving.

C. He has very little spare time.

D. He can’t apply for a mortgage.

26. Why was David able to get the job in the company?

A. He had done well in his exams.

B. He had written some computer programs before.

C. He was good at playing computer games.

D. He had learnt to write computer programs at school.

27. Why did David say “I’m not truly free when it comes to my money issues”?

A. He cannot use his money by himself.

B. He has to give all his money to his mother.

C. He spends a lot of money on clothes every month.

D. He cannot buy expensive things by credit cards or loans.

Many of the world’s countries have reached or are approaching zero population growth (ZPG). Nearly all such lands are economically well developed. They included much of Europe (including Russia), the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia. As the rate(比率)of natural increase (RNI) declines, two things happen. First, the population begins to decrease if the loss is not balanced by immigration. Second, a country’s population ages because there are fewer births.

Is achieving ZPG good or bad? What happens when a country’s population begins to drop? Many people, after all, believe that population decrease is a good thing. But is it good for everything? Does everyone agree?

An aging population can create many problems. Senior citizens require more health care and medical attention. Rather than paying into retirement programs, they begin to draw from their pensions(退休金). In the US, the Social Security program, according to many experts, will be used up by 2018. It will pay out more money than it takes in. Additionally, a great number of job providers go begging in search of people willing to accept entry level positions that pay low wages. Under this circumstance, many of these jobs are aging population that cannot labor, so who will fill them? At the other extreme, some positions require a large number of highly specialized skills. With the decrease in young generation, who will fill these positions as retirees leave the workforce?

The answer to the question of declining and aging population is simple: increase migration. Today many people, particularly those from less developed countries, are migrating in search of employment. Many are willing to take jobs that cannot (or will not) be filled by the domestic population. Others are well educated and highly skilled (such as international graduates who want to stay). Both groups contribute to a country’s economy progress in many ways. Further, they add to the richness of a country’s culture. Of greatest importance, perhaps, is the fact that they have

become absolutely necessary to the economy and development of many lands. As you can see, for many countries and for many immigrants, migration is a win-win situation.

28. In the writer’s view, which of the following statement is TRUE?

A. Everyone agrees that achieving ZPG is absolutely good.

B. Achieving ZPG is every country’s aim in spite of its side effects.

C. Achieving ZPG is bad for senior citizens.

D. Achieving ZPG is good for job providers.

29. What does the underlined words “the domestic population” mean?

A. The people within the country.

B. The people from developing countries.

C. The people in search of employment.

D. The people with specialized skills.

30. Why does the author say that migration is a win-win situation?

A. It can make RNI increase as the ZPG remains.

B. It can get both native people and immigrants well paid.

C. It can do good to the economy of both developed countries and developing countries.

D. It can solve the ZPG problems and get immigrants employed.

31. In which kind of website can we find this passage?

A. Education.

B. Economy.

C. Science.

D. Technology.

What Theresa Loe is doing proves that a large farm isn’t a prerequisite for a modern grow-your-own lifestyle. On a mere 1/10 of an acre in Los Angeles, Loe and her family grow, can (装罐)and preserve much of the food they consume.

Loe is a master food preserver, gardener and canning expert. She also operates a website, where she shares her tips and recipes, with the goal of demonstrating that everyone has the ability to control what’s on their plate.

Loe initially went to school to become an engineer, but she quickly learned that her enthusiasm was mainly about growing and preparing her own food. “I got into cooking my own food and started growing my own herbs(香草)and foods for that fresh flavor,” she said. Engineer

by day, Loe learned cooking at night school. She eventually purchased a small piece of land with her husband and began growing their own foods.

“I teach people how to live a farm-fresh life without a farm,” Loe said. Through her website Loe emphasizes that “anybody can do this anywhere.” Got an apartment with a balcony(阳台)? Plant some herbs. A window with a platform? Perfect spot for growing. Start with herbs, she recommends, because “they’re very forgiving.” Just a little of the herbs “can take your regular cooking to a whole new level,” she added. “I think it’s a great place to start.” Then? Try growing something from a seed, she said, like a tomato or some tea.

Canning is a natural extension and fresh keeping of the planting she does. With every planted food, Loe noted, there’s a moment when it’s bursting with its absolute peak flavor, and it can be stored for a long time by canning, which is a sort of economization” I keep it in a canning jar,” Loe said. “Canning for me is about knowing what’s in your food, knowing where it comes from, and not concerning about the safety problem.”

In addition to being more in touch with the food she’s eating, another joy comes from passing this knowledge and the des ire for good food to her children: “Affecting them and telling them your opinion on not only being careful about what we eat but understanding the bigger picture,” she said, “that if we don’t take care of the earth, no one will.”

32. The underlined word “prerequisite” in paragraph 1 can probably be replaced by ________.

A. recipe

B. method

C. requirement

D. choice

33. Why does Loe suggest starting growing with herbs?

A. They can help foods maintain a fresh flavor.

B. They are easy to grow.

C. They can bring your cooking to a whole new level.

D. They are easy to cook.

34. According to Loe, canning has several benefits EXCEPT ________.

A. It can preserve the best flavor of foods.

B. It can improve her planting skills.

C. She doesn’t have to worry about food security.

D. It won’t get her planted food wasted.

35. What is the “the big picture” in paragraph 6 that Loe wishes her children to understand?

A. The knowledge about good food.

B. The way to live a grow-our-own life.

C. The joy of getting in touch with foods.

D. The responsibility to protect our earth.

But in the past, certain recipes have gotten lost in translation. The latest example is the Chinese smashed cucumber trend that has recently popped up in New York City. Many of Manhattan’s restaurants now offer smashed cucumbers dressed with sauces such as sesame oil with garlic and yogurt. This isn’t the first time that US chefs have embraced Chinese cooking techniques. Chefs in the US lean on flavors that American taste buds are attracted to, but by evolving the taste in this way, the original Chinese recipe is sometimes ignored. General Tso’s Chicken(左宗棠鸡), chop suey(炒杂碎) and fortune cookies are among the most popular Chinese dishes in the US. However, “Chinese people don’t crack open fortune cookies after every meal... Most Chinese people don’t even know what chop suey actually is,” Shanghai-based journalist Jamie Fullerton told Business Insider. “In the 19th century, what we call Chinese food in the US... was a lot of seafood, shark fins, bird’s nests, and a lot of shrimp,” Yong Chen, author of Chop Suey Nation: The Story of Chinese Food in America, told Yahoo Food. “But American diners rejected that.” Chefs specializing in Chinese cuisine want Americans to try their food. So they changed the ingredients, the cuts of meat and the presentation to suit American palates. This is a cultural compromise to make consumers happy. At the same time, they are turning the food into something less Chinese and more American. 1. How many ingredients are there in the smashed cucumbers according to the passage? A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five 2. Which of the following is among the most popular Chinese dishes in the US now? A. Seafood B. Bird’s nests C. Shark fins D. Fortune cookies 3. What did the chefs do in order to suit American palates? A. They had to change the cooking method to suit American palates
