Different people look for differet things when deciding ona place to live. Some want to be near their relatives. Others mayemphasizean affordable lease. For me, neither of these things is a primary consideration. My biggest requirement is living somewhere with enough to do.

While living near relatives is of course nice, the people in my family are all frequent travelers and accustomed to not seeing each other for extended periods of time. I have relatives scattered all across the globe, and rarely do they remain in any one place for long. Travel is a very important part of life for us. Thus, even if we all lived near each other in the same city (which we don’t), we would still probably only see each other during major holidays. When I get older and have kids, this may change. At this stage in my life, however, living near relatives is not a veryhigh priority.

Price is a more important consideration;that said, I am willing to pay a little more than plannedin order tofind the perfect place. When I was apartment hunting in New York, for

example, there was always something not quite ideal about the places in my price range—perhaps the nearest subway stop was too far away, or maybe there were no grocery stores in the vicinity. One day, I checked out a slightly more expensive listing out of curiosity, and it ended up being the perfect location—an easy commute, good restaurants and stores, spacious and clean, and a great view of the city. I had to live a little more frugallyfor a while, but I was much cheeriercoming home to a place I actually loved.

Ultimately, I need a place with enough to see and do in order to be happy. That means somewhere close enough to centers of nightlife, places to eat, and malls where I can pick up clothes or catch a few movies over the weekend. I’ve lived in all kinds of places in the past, and the biggest decider in terms of happiness has always been whether or not I had enough things around me to keep me occupied. This probably has something to do with how old I am—there are a lot of things I just haven’t experienced yet, and I want to experience those things while I still can. I want to be able to drop into a salsa studio or go rock-climbing in the evenings without having to travel halfway across the city.

The right place to live in will strike a balance between a number of different considerations. It would ideally be close to the people you care about, though this is not always possible, and also affordable and in an area with plenty of things to do. If I had to pick just one requirement, however, the last would be the most important.
