In the past, people had very different opinions about work. The ancient Greek

hated it. Aristotle (亚里士多德) said that working for money hurt the mind. The Romans didn't like work very much, either. Cicero (西塞罗) said that there were only two good jobs —a farmer and a businessman. The early Christians (基督教徒) thought that work and money from work were good—if people shared the money with the poor. In the sixteenth century, Thomas More(托马斯·摩尔) described a nice world in his Utopia (空想的完美境界). In the world, everybody worked. Leonardo da Vinci (达·芬奇), who lived in the sixteenth century, thought that work was necessary for every person. In the nineteenth century, many famous thinkers thought that work was the reason for all human progress.

Today in the United States, more than 90% of the people between twenty and fifty-four work or want to work. 80% of' the workers say that they would like to go on working though they had a lot of money and didn't have to work.

But there is another side to the matter. Many people have jobs that they don't like. They usually don't think of work as pleasure. They want more money but they don't want to work more. They look forward to vacations. People don't often take pictures of themselves at work.

So American have mixed feelings about work. Most people do it. They even encourage their small children to work —to sell newspapers or fruit. But many people don't like it. They only like their weekends and their vacations.
