M: What time does the concert start?
W: Take it easy. The concert starts at 8: 30. We still have 35 minutes to get there.
W: Shall I bring you your coffee now or would you rather have it with your lunch?
M: I'd like it now, please, and some dessert after the main courses.
W: There're so many children at the school. I wonder how the teacher keeps track of them.
M: I used to get cold feet at the thought of teaching a class of 100. That's the fact.
M: What skirt are you looking for?
W: Well, it's getting warmer this time of year and heavy clothes are no more needed. So I want something light weight.
M: It seems fairly mild for this time of year.
W: Yes. Quite different from the forecast.
M: And I don't think we're in for snow, either. Let's hope it stays nice for the weekend.
W: Look, how beautiful the flowers are!
M: Yeah. And how fresh the air is ! Everything is new and fresh here in the country.
W: We have been kept indoors by the rain for a long time. Now it is clearing up at last.
M: Now, let's get out of the car and have a walk around.
W: Here's your camera. Let's take some pictures around here.
M: Come and have a look into the river. There are so many fish in the water.
W: How nice it is!
W: Hello, Lin Feng!
M: Oh, hi, Lucy!
W: What's the next lesson, Lin Feng?
W: Oh, good, that's my favorite subject.
M: That's because you always find it so easy! I find it very difficult, so I don't like it much.
W: Nancy finds English quite difficult, too. But she says it's her favorite subject!
M: Yes, I know. And her second favorite subject is math.
W: Math is my worst! I don't like it. I always get the answers wrong!
M: So if English is your favorite subject, what's your second favorite?
W: PE. What about you?
M: I'm not sure. Both Chinese and science are my favorite subjects. I think I like Chinese a little more than science.
W: You're very different from Nancy! She doesn't like science at all!
W: Hey, I was wondering if you could do me a favor.
M: That depends. What is it?
W: It's kind of a big favor. I owe my landlady $200. She'll collect it on Friday, but I don't get paid until next Monday. Do you think you could loan me some cash until I get paid?
M: I'd love to help you out, but I'm a bit short on cash this month as well. I had to get a new engine put into my car, and that ate up my savings.
W: I'll pay you back on Monday. I promise.
M: Let's see, I've got about $50 to get me through the weekend. I can only spare about $20.
W: Thanks a lot. Every little bit will help. Tell you what, if you aren't doing anything tonight, why don't you come over and have dinner at my place.
M: That'd be great. Thanks!
M: Well, how was your honeymoon?
W: It was fantastic! We had such a good time. The only problem was that because it was their high season, we spent hours queuing.
M: Peak periods always involve hours of queuing. At least you got a nice tan though!
W: Yes, Florida had great weather while we were there. You look tanned, too. Did you go somewhere?
M: My friends and I just got back from Bali.
W: Wow! Bali has some of the best beaches in the world, doesn't it?
M: Yes, we were lucky. My friend's father owns a resort on one of the islands, so we were able to stay for free.
W: Did you go diving while you were there?
M: I took a few diving classes before, but I didn't really like it, so I played table tennis instead!
W: Did you take any pictures in the ocean?
M: I've got quite a few pictures of all different kinds of fish. I'll show them to you next time I see you.
M: Hello, there. I'm Jack.
W: Hello there. Well. This is it. As you can see, it's fully furnished. You've got your TV...cable
TV and broadband Internet is included in the rent. The kitchenette is over there...all fully fitted... nice new fridge and cooker, kettle, toaster, microwave ... all your mod-cons. The bathroom is through there...box shower unit...sink...all new from B&Q. There's a nice view of the park from the window too.
M: Hmm...it's smaller than I thought. How much is the rent again?
W: 200 a week, plus of course, you're responsible for all fees including gas, water and electricity.
M: It said 160 in the ad.
W: Yeah, but that was for the small room upstairs and that's already gone.
M: Well, 200 is a bit too much for me.
W: Well, this is London. And it is your own place...good location, near the Tube.
M: Look...I can stretch to 180 a week...I can't afford 200 plus all the other bills.
W: All right. One month's rent in advance, plus a month's deposit. That'll be 1440 cash. This is the contract...read through it, initial each page and then sign at the bottom...
EP Portable Heater
We all know that the cost of heating our homes will continue to be
a significant burden on the family budget. Now millions of people are
saving on their heating bills with the EP portable heater. With over one
million satisfied customers around the world, the new EP heats better
and faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent.
The EP has no exposed heating parts that can cause a fire. The
outside of the EP only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn
children or pets.
The EP will not reduce oxygen in the room. With other heaters,
you'll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen.
The advanced EP also heats the room evenly,_wall to wall and floor to ceiling. It comfortably covers an area up to 350 square feet. Other heaters heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat concentrated to the center of the room. And they only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EP, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room.
The EP comes with a 3-year warranty (保修) and a 60-day, no questions asked, satisfaction guarantee. If you are not totally satisfied, return it at our expense and your money will be given back
Now we have a special offer for 10 days, during which you can enjoy a half price discount and a free delivery. If you order after that, we reserve the right to either accept or reject order requests at the discounted price.
Take action right now!

Here are some kids who had great ideas that they turned into inventions. We call these kids “brain children”．
Six year-old Suzanna Goodin, tired of cleaning the cat food spoon, came up with the idea of a spoon-shaped cracker that can be eaten. She won a grand prize for her invention in the Weekly Reader National Invention Contest.
Eight-year-old Theresa Thompson and her 9-year old sister Mary were the youngest sisters to receive a US patent. They invented a solar tent for a science fair project in 1960. They called the device a Wigwarm.
At age 9, Margaret Knight began working in a cotton mill, where she saw a steel-tipped shuttle (梭子) fly out and hit a nearby worker. As a result, Margaret made her first invention: a shuttle restraining device. She went on to invent the machine that makes the square-bottom paper bags we still use for shopping today. That machine was patented in 1871．
Eleven-year-old Jeanie Low received a patent on March 10, 1992, for inventing the Kiddie Stool (凳子)—a fold-up stool that fits under the sink so kids can unfold it, stand on it, and reach the sink on their own!
Becky Schroeder began her patenting career when she was 14 years old. She put phosphorescent paint on paper under her writing paper so that she could write in the dark. This invention was later used in all sorts of ways. Doctors use it in hospitals to read patients' charts at night without waking them, and astronauts use it when their electrical systems are turned down for recharging.
Fourteen-year-old Pamela Sica invented a push-button device that raises the floor of a car so that goods can be raised and easily removed. Her invention won a grand prize for her age group in the Weekly Reader National In vention Contest. She wanted to patent her invention but found that it was too expensive.
Eight-year-old Chelsea Lannon received a patent in 1994 for the “pocket diaper (尿布)”，a diaper that has a pocket that holds things. She got her idea while helping her mother with her baby brother—while she was still in kindergarten!

A solar-powered airplane designed to fly day and night without fuel successfully made its first test flight above the Swiss countryside in April 2010．The Solar Impulse，which has 12,000 solar batteries built into its wings, is a prototype (雏形) for an aircraft intended to fly around the world without fuel in 2012．
It glided (滑翔) for 87 minutes above western Switzerland at an altitude of 1,200 metres with German test pilot Markus Seherdel at the controls. “Everything went as it should，”Seherdel said after landing. It's made of carbon fiber (碳纤维), which makes it possible that it has the wing length of an Airbus A340 while weighing the same as a mid-size car.
The prototype was tested in December 2009, flying a distance of 350 metres, one metre above the runway of a military airbase near Zurich. The propeller (螺旋桨) plane is powered by four electric motors and designed to fly day and night by saving energy from its solar cells in high-performance batteries. It is eventually expected to attain an average flying speed of 70 km per hour and reach a highest altitude of 8,500 metres.
Bertrand Piceard，one of the Swiss pilots behind the project, is best known for completing the first non-stop，round-the-world flight in a hot-air balloon in March 1999．The other main pilot, Swiss engineer Andre Borschberg, has described it as “ten times lighter than the very best glider”.“Such a large wing length for so little weight is something completely new in the plane family，”he said.
The project's budget is 100 million Swiss francs, 80 million francs of which has been secured from sponsors. Belgian chemical company Solvay, Swiss watchmaker Omega, and German banking giant Deutsche Bank, are the three main sponsors. Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne，one of tile two Swiss federal polytechnical universities, acts as a scientific advisor.
29．Carbon fiber is used in the plane to make sure that it ________.
A．can fly high and far enough
B．can hold enough solar batteries
C．can absorb enough solar energy
D．has very large wings, but does not weigh very much
答案：D根据第二段的“It's made of carbon fiber (碳纤维), which makes it possible that it has the wing length of an Airbus A340 while weighing the same a a mid-size car.”可知，这架太阳能飞机使用了碳纤维，其目的是确保它有足够长的翼展及较小的重量。
30．When did the plane make its first attempt to take off?
A．In March 1999．B．In December 2009．
C．In March 2010．D．In April 2010．
答案：B根据第三段的“The prototype was tested in December 2009, flying a distance of 350 metres, one metre above the runway of a military airba se near Zurich.”可知，这架太阳能飞机第一次尝试离开地面的时间是2009年12月。
31．The project is financially supported by ________.
a．Belgian chemical company Solvay
b．Swiss watchmaker Omega
c．Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lansanne
d．German banking giant Deutsche Bank
答案：C根据最后一段的“Belgian chemical company Solvay, Swiss watchmaker Omega, and German banking giant Deutsche Bank, are the three main sponsors...”可知C项正确。
Today I'll be talking about the invention of the camera and photography.
The camera is often thought to be a modern invention, but as early as 1727, a
German physicist discovered that light darkens silver salt. Used as a camera, a
big box was set up, and a small hole was cut in one side to let the light in; he
made temporary pictures on the salt. Silver salt is still the base of the photographic film today. Then a French scientist made the first permanent picture by using a special piece of metal which was covered with silver salt. A photograph he made in 1826 still exists.
The painter De Gear improved the process by covering the metal also with placing the common salt which we can eat. That was in 1839, the official date of beginning of photographs. But the problem was the printing of the photographs. And it wasn't until other scientists developed the kind of photographic paper we now use that good prints were possible and photography became truly modern. In the 1870s, Matthew Bradey was able to take his famous pictures in American Civil War. In the 20s of this century, Georges Mann of the United States simplified film developing, and Dr. Edward Lane invented the so-called “Instant Camera”，which uses self-developing film. If we say photography came into existence in 1839, it follows that it took more than 100 years for the camera to reach its present condition of technical refinement (密度)．
32．Which discovery was the basis of photography?
A．Light darkens silver salt. B．Light darkens natural salt.
C．Light darkens silver. D．Light darkens self-developing film.
答案：A细节理解题。根据第一段第二句的后半句“... a German physicist discovered that light darkens silver salt.”可知答案为A。
33．How was the first permanent picture made?
A．By making use of special paper.
B．By adding common salt to silver salt.
C．By giving a slight colour to the silver salt.
D．By using a special piece of metal.
答案：D细节理解题。根据第一段倒数第二句“Then a French scientist made the first permanent picture by using a special piece of metal....”可知答案为D。
34．According to the author, why is Matthew Bradey remembered today?
A．He was a soldier. B．He took war photographs.
C．He painted portraits. D．He designed a portable camera.
答案：B推理判断题。由第二段中“In the 1870s, Matthew Bradey was able to take his famous pictures in American Civil War.”可知，他在美国内战所拍摄的照片很出名，影响力很大，以致人们记得他，故本题选B。
35．What did Dr. Edward Lane invent?
A．A cheap process of developing film at home.
B．A new kind of film.
C．An automatic printer.
D．An instant camera that develops its own film.
答案：D细节理解题。从第二段倒数第二句的“... Dr. Edward Lane invented the so-called
‘Instant Camera’，which uses self-developing film.”可知Edward Lane博士发明了使用自显影胶片的一次成相照相机，故答案为D。
Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. __36__ However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑)position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.
Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.
Undo your seatbelt. __37__ Unbuckle the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.
__38__ Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.
Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car. __39__
Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival. __40__ While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.
A．Open the window as soon as you hit the water.
B．Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.
C．It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.
D．Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning.
E．In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
F．This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.
G．But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.
36．D由前面的句子Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is
thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying.可以得出答案。
38．A由后面的句子Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window.可以得出答案。
39．G由前面的句子It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.可以得出答案。
40．C由后面的句子While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.可以得出答案。
A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting (诱人的) apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn't much of a fruit-eater, __41__ a bar of chocolate if given the choice, __42__，as they say, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the __43__ he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
He stood on tiptoe (脚尖), __44__ as high as he could, but even at his tallest __45__ he was unable to touch it. He began to __46__ up and down, as high as he could, at the __47__ of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple. Still it remained out of __48__.
Not giving up, he thought, if only he had something to __49__ on. His school bag wouldn't give enough height and he didn't want to __50__ the things inside, like his lunch box, pencil case, and Gameboy. Looking __51__，he hoped he might find an old box, a rock, or, __52__ luck, even a ladder, but it was a tidy neighbourhood and there was nothing he could use.
He had tried everything he could think to do. __53__ seeing any other choices, he gave up and started to walk __54__. At first he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his __55__，and how he really wanted that apple. The more he __56__ like this, the more unhappy he became.
__57__，the boy of this story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn't always get what he wanted. He started to say to himself, “This isn't __58__. I don't have the apple and I'm feeling miserable as well. There's __59__ more I can do to get the apple—that is unchangeable—but we are supposed to be able to __60__ our feelings. If that's the case, what can I do to feel better？”

61．______ 62．______ 63．______ 64．______ 65．______
66．______ 67．______ 68．______ 69．______ 70.______
