Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being(安康),

according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feeling.

Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, res earchers suggested. Faceless, bodiless “virtual”(虚拟的)communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationship formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology per se; it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors. “It really points to the need fo r considering social effects in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord (房东) can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartment. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result,

new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city.

Some experts argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics hold the opinion that an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.

Economic theory predicts the results of economic decision, such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be corrected only if “other things are equal”. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.

The concept of culture has been defined many times, and although no definition has achieved universal acceptance, most of the definitions include three central ideas:

that culture is passed on from generation to generation, that a culture represents a ready-made principle for living and for making day-to-day decisions, and, finally, that the components of a culture are accepted by those in the culture as good, and true, and not to be questioned. The eminent anthropologist George Murdock has listed seventy-three items that characterize every known culture, past and present.

The list begins with Age-grading and Athletic sports, runs to Weaning and Weather Control, and includes on the way such items as Calendar, Fire making, Property Rights, and Tool making. I would submit that even the most extreme advocate of a culture of poverty viewpoint would readily acknowledge that, with respect to almost all of these items, every American, beyond the first generation immigrant, regardless of race or class, is a member of a common culture. We all share pretty much the same sports. Maybe poor kids don’t know how to play polo, and rich kids don’t spend time with stickball, but we all know baseball, football, and basketball. Despite some misguided efforts to raise minor dialects to the status of separate tongues, we all, in fact, share the same language.

There may be differences in diction and usage, but it would be ridiculous to say that all Americans don’t speak English. We have the calendar, the law, and large numbers of other cultural items in common. It may well be true that on a few of the seventy-three items there are minor variations between classes, but these kinds of things are really slight variations on a common theme.

There are other items that show variability, not in relation to class, but in relation to religion and ethnic background —funeral customs and cooking, for example. But if there is one place in America where the melting pot is a reality, it is on the kitchen stove; in the course of one month, half the readers of this sentence have probably eaten pizza, hot pastrami, and chow mein. Specific differences that might be identified as signs of separate cultural identity are relatively insignificant within the general unity of American life; they are cultural commas and semicolons in the paragraphs and pages of American life.

重庆市第122中学是一所教学质量优秀的城郊普通初中,是国家级首批基础教育课程改革实验学校,从2001年至今,已走过7年的课改历程。我校有一大批青年教师在课改中不断摔打磨练,并迅速成长起来。新课程改革的根本出发点是为了一切学生,而改革的主要落脚点是在课堂。课堂是教师发展、学生成长的主阵地,更是提高学校教学质量的核心所在,甚至有的专家们提出了“改革最终发生在课堂上”的观点。回顾7年走过的路程,我们深刻地意识到,只有带着反思上路,不断加强课堂教学改革,才能真正落实课改理念。 冷静反思,发现问题 2001年,我校成为全国首批基础教育课程改革实验学校。新的课改理念让教师们激情澎湃,兴奋不已,以饱满的热情投入到课改工作之中,将课改理念转化为具体的教学行为。在课改初期,教师对课改理念吃得不透,对新课改理念的认识存在不足,这使我们很快意识到:我们的课堂还没有真正体现课改理念,对课改理念的认识还存在一定的偏差。为此,我们很快从浮躁与狂热中沉静下来,开始深刻反思:我们的课堂教学是否真正体现了课改理念?课堂教学究竟存在哪些问题?我们应如何立足课堂,彰显课堂魅力?从而让教师的专业素养不断变得深厚,让学生的后续学习能力得到更大的发展,让学校的办学水平更上一层楼。 为了找出问题,我们一头扎进课堂,深入调研。通过调研,我们发现:我们的课堂教学中尚存在诸多问题,有的甚至是严重的问题。 问题1.舍本逐末,过分追求课堂形式 (1) 满堂问取代满堂灌。 追问:提出的问题是否有价值?提得合适吗?有没有梯度和系统?是否有思维含量? (2)课件+表演+讨论=自主合作学习 个别教师片面理解“自主、探究与合作学习”,一节课大部分的时间都用来进行漫无边际的讨论或安排学生表演。讨论中,课堂上常常有三分之一的学生“混于其中,乐得清闲”,他们多半是在谈论与课堂无关的话题;表演时,课堂上绝大多数学生是表演者的“忠实“观众,思维未参与其中;课件展示,画面美轮美奂,学生一晃而过,心中未留下多少痕迹。这些教学,导致课堂上该凸显的教学重点未凸显出来,改突破的教学难点并未得到突破,学生该过手的知识并未过手。这样的课堂缺乏实质性的师生互动、生生互动、生本互动;缺乏有价值的知识的生成。并未充分发挥出自主、合作、探究学习方式的作用。 这类课程不但大大降低了课堂教学效率,而且还助长了学生对问题不作深入探究、不愿仔细倾听的恶习。长此下去,势必形成学生在学习上浅尝辄止的浮躁个性。这样的课堂培养出来的学生虽然有勇于表现,口头表达能力强的优点,却缺乏扎实钻研,专注于问题独立思考的良好品质。 追问:单纯的课堂热闹就是自主合作探究学习吗?内容与形式,孰轻孰重?该如何真正让学生的思维动起来? (3)课堂评价缺乏原则,巴掌赞歌满堂飞。 有的教师在课堂上对学生的评价缺乏原则,一味叫好。答得好的,究竟好在哪里并未指出;答得不好的,怕挫伤学生积极性,不予置评,误导学生。 追问:评价应遵循的原则是什么?改如何正确引导学生? 问题2.照“案”宣科,课堂缺乏动态调整 有的课堂教学只是在执行既定教案,缺乏对教案自觉的动态调整。教师对学生的认知准备了解不充分;教学目标的设定成为教案完整的一种形式。教师想教什么与实际在教什么存在一定的脱节。 追问:教师想教什么?教师实际又在教什么?学生实际学到了什么? 问题3.缺乏专业引领的机制。 专家与教研员很少,一线教师很多,深入课堂,观察指导,与教师平等对话与交流。教师对

If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer. If you have a juicer you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced fruit. Out comes a "soft-serve" creamy dessert, to be eaten right away. This makes a fun activity for a children's party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.
