He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got on an island.

On the day before the bass (鲈鱼) season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening. When his fishing rod (鱼竿) doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other . His father watched with admiration as the boy carefully lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.

The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish. The father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. "You will have to put it back, son," he said. “Dad!” cried the boy. "There will be other fish," said his father. "Not as big as this one/' cried the boy.

He looked around. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by the clarity清晰) of his father's voice th.PM decision couldn't be changed. This is all about eyes. When it comes to relationships, people's eyes can be a window into their hearts. We will tell a story about a man and woman who are teachers at the same school. The woman is interested in the man. She uses many methods to catch his eye.

Let us suppose that this man wants to spend time with her to get to know her better. He asks her out on a date. She is so happy that she may walk around for days with stars in her eyes. She is extremely happy because this man is the apple of her eye, a very special person. She might tell him that he is the only person she wants, or "1 only have eyes for you."

On their date, the couple might eat a meal together at a restaurant. If the man is really hungry, his eyes might be bigger than his stomach. He might order more food than-he can eat. When his food arrives at the table, his eyes might pop out. He might be very surprised by the amount of food provided. He might not even believe his own eyes.

During their dinner, the couple might discuss many things. They might discover that they see eye to eye, or agree on many issues. They share the same beliefs and opinions. For example, they might agree that every crime or injury should be punished. That is, they firmly believe in the idea of an eye for an eye.

The next day, at their school, the woman asks the man to keep an eye on, or watch the young students in her class while she is out of the classroom. This might be hard to do when the teacher is writing on a board at the front of the classroom. To do so, a teacher would need to even when he is not watching them.

55. Which of the following is a wrong use of "eye"?

A. He is the apple of his enemy's eye.

B .The splendid palace catches the visitors' eye.

56. When will you have stars in your eyes according to the second paragraph?

A. Being beaten in the eyes

B. Imagining something delightful.

B. You say that it is an eye for an eye.

C. You see eye to eye with the murderer.

D. Your eyes become bigger than your stomach.

58. What does the author want to tell us through the passage?

Lost your wallet? Got bad news? The right initial(最初的) response can make all the difference in these three surprising situations.

When you've witnessed a crime

First: Protect yourself. You won't be able to help the other person if you arc in danger as well, so take yourself out of harm's way before calling 911 for help.

Then: Spend a few seconds memorizing a clue, like a physical characteristic of the suspect, says Elaine Gloyd, president of Crime Stoppers USA. "In a time of distress," she says, "it's difficult to remember too much. But you might remember at least one really specific detail that can turn out to be important."

When you get bad medical news

First: Put away your car keys. Unless you want to risk turning a health threat into an injury, don't try to drive while you're distraught. Instead, "call someone to give you a ride or take a taxi"

Then: Take a deep breath and ask your physician questions about how the diagnosis was

made. Get a second opinion, and study your health-plan coverage to help you make decisions about treatment. I

Finally, think carefully about what information you want to share with others.

When your computer gets a virus

First; Go off-line. If you suspect a virus has struck your computer it suddenly starts working very slowly, or seems to be doing something even when you aren't - your first step should be to go off-line.

Then: If you have antivirus software, run a scan immediately. If the software detects a virus, it will take action to get rid of the virus and notify you when it has. If you don't have antivirus software, call your computer's manufacturer for phone-based assistance. And "if you have a second PC or a laptop, use the uninfected one to get advice from the manufacturers Web site on how to fix a virus," she says. A camera, a glove, a hand tool, even a toothbrush...they are all up there, above the clouds, going around and around the Earth. There are also thousands of pieces of metal and plastic. Some of them are only about the size of a fingernail, while many much larger. Scientists consider all these objects "space junk," —a problem.

Since people first launched rockets into space in the 1950s, we have been leaving behind all sorts of things, like the camera lost by astronauts who worked outside their spacecraft. But much of the space junk consists of little pieces of things that were once bigger objects, until they struck each other and broke apart. Some things sent into space fall back toward Earth and bum up in the atmosphere. But larger pieces sometimes survive the extreme heat and hit the ground or the ocean at great speeds. So there is always concern that something may fall from the sky and do some harm.

But space junk falling on housetops is not the biggest worry. Scientists are concerned about the "Kessler" syndrome (凯斯勒现象) It is named for the American scientist who first thought of the idea in 1978. Imagine what happens when an empty rocket strikes another while revolving around the earth. Two big things become many smaller ones. They then hit other things. The pieces get smaller and smaller until they form a cloud of junk blocking the path of future space vehicles.

So what can be done to clean up the space around our planet? Marco Castronuovo, an Italian Space Agency researcher, has an idea — launching a satellite into space that would get very close to some of the larger pieces of space junk. The satellite would connect a small rocket to the useless object. When the rocket explodes, it pushes the junk into a lower and slower orbit (轨道)has proposed using a number of small satellites with robotic(机器人的)arms. One arm would catch the space junk, and another arm could connect the rocket. He imagines that each satellite would jump from one large piece of junk to another. He thinks this method could destroy about

ten large objects each year.

67. According to the passage, the space junk

A. has nothing to do with the astronauts

B. consists or an objective in the space

C. may hit the ground or the ocean

D. cannot be gotten rid of

68. Ordinary people show concern about the space junk because they_.

B. fear that it may fall from the sky

C. care about the possible pollution

D. worry about the security of space -

69. Which of the following statements is true when people talk about the "Kessler" syndrome

A. It has no effects on human efforts into the space.

B. It refers to the small pieces in the space.

C.lt happens because space junk hits each other.

D. It is made up of a cloud of junk.

70. One of the imagined ways to clean the space is to___.

A .blow the junk away from the earth

Earthquake safety is very important and there is more to it than just keeping buildings from falling down. So if your home is in an earthquake area, you should prepare carefully before the earthquake comes. First, make sure you buy a house which is earthquake safe. All pipes should be fixed to the wall and all walls should be especially thick and strong. You also have to make sure that there are bolts underneath your house. They are one of the most important ways of protecting a house. Make sure the building has no broken windows and is well repaired. Second, look at the objects in your house. Those in the living room, which are the most likely to hurt us, are computers, televisions and lamps. They can be tied to tables or stuck to them so they won’t easily move around. The kitchen, which is also very dangerous, must have strong doors on all the cupboards. This is the place where
