It’s not surprising that there are hundreds of hotels near the Eiffel Tower. After all, Paris is a famous city in the world, and the Eiffel Tower is one of the attractions visited most worldwide.

Here three teenagers are telling us their spring break stories.

In my April holidays, I was lucky enough to take part in a school trip to Vietnam. On the first part of our adventure we went on a challenging four-day trek(长途旅行) across many mountains.

Luckily, there were many of my classmates and teachers around. We relied on each other for support and encouragement when things got really tough. Even though the trek was hard, I’ll never forget how beautiful the landscape was.

During our trek, we got to visit a local tribe. The best part was when we played with the young kids. We showed them how to use toys like a soccer ball. They loved being with us and always had such big smiles on their faces. We left them many gifts like colouring books and sporting goods. They were so thankful and happy. I think we really made their day.

—By Annalee Del Vecchio, 18, University of Sydney, Australia

During Spring Break, I went to Florida with my host family. “I want to get a tan( 晒成褐色) there!” my host sister said excitedly.

It was really warm down there. My host sisters and my host brothers spent most of the daytime lying on the beach, enjoying the sun and reading a book. I didn’t want a tan at all, so I wore a long sleeved shirt to hang out with them on the beach. That was kind of weird(怪异的). My host sister Kelly has sensitive(敏感的) skin. Her skin got burned after just a few hours in the sun. She felt sad!

We went to a dance club one night. I didn’t really dance a lot, but my sisters were so energetic that they danced until midnight.

—By Li Tongtong,16, Lexington Christian Academy in Massachusetts, US

American high school goers call it Spring Break, and judging by American films, these holidays are filled with constant partying. However, in the UK we sometimes call it Study Week.

Sadly, that is exactly what I will be filling my two weeks off doing. I am currently in my sixth year at school with only a couple of months to go till I sit my Advanced Higher Art, Higher Psychology and Higher Business exams. I will be heading to the school library as much as possible, as well as locking myself in my room for a good few hours of the day.

But I will of course find time to enjoy my holidays as well. In fact, many of my friends are turning eighteen during the break and will be having parties to celebrate. They tend to be held in either church halls or nightclubs. In the UK, the legal age for drinking alcohol is eighteen years old, so I am sure there will be plenty of beer, wine or even vodka (a firm favourite of mine) being drunk at the party.

—By Miriam Clark, 17, Turnbull High School, Glasgow, UK

21. According to the text, those who like to enjoy the sunbath in spring break can go to ________.

A. Australia

22. Miriam Clark will spend most of her spring break in ________.

A. taking exams

B. studying

C. dancing

D. having parties

23. From the text, we can learn that vodka is the name of a(n) ________.

A. alcohol

B. soft drink

C. food

D. party

European Day of Languages falls on 26 September. BBC News Online reported the attitudes across several European Union countries to languages.

Tamsin Smith, Rome, Italy

Italians attach very high importance to language learning, particularly English. Twenty years ago it was quite difficult to find an English speaker here but today it is quite easy. The strong influence of American and English culture helps young people to learn the English language. They often become familiar with it through Harry Potter books or Disney movies. English schools, where Italian children are taught all their lessons in English, are also becoming popular among rich Italians.

Lucien Libert, Paris, France

Languages are very important in France. A good knowledge of the English language is necessary for many Frenchmen to get a good job and the more languages you can learn, the better. English is the first language you learn in school and you start very young. Most people have at least eight years of English learning at school. Learning German or Spanish comes next and Latin is also taught in most schools. While French people learn languages, there is also a movement to protect the French language.

James Helm, Dublin, Ireland

The English language predominates in Ireland, but the ancient Irish language is a lasting source of pride and interest, and it remains a living tongue that is used in several areas. Schools are required to teach ancient Irish, and most students learn it as part of the subjects. There is a continuing discussion about how to protect the language best. In recent years some primary schools have introduced foreign language classes for younger students, and the Irish government has tried to encourage schools to offer more languages such as French, Spanish, German and Italian.

21. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Tamsin Smith?

A. English learning in Italy has been popular for more than a century.

B. Some popular books and movies help young Italian people with their English a lot.

C. Only children from rich families like to learn English in Italy.

D. More and more Italian children have given up learning their mother tongue.

22. What can help you get a better job in France?

A. Studying abroad for at least one year.

B. Learning English at younger ages.

C. Knowing another language but French.

D. Learning several languages well.

23. In Ireland most students ______.

A. like learning English instead of the ancient Irish

B. are asked to learn many other foreign languages

C. have to spend time learning the ancient Irish

D. have no idea how to protect the English language

(英语)高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案

(英语)高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. (1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________. A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol (2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision? A. They didn't fight for Danville High School any more. B. They all gave speeches to apologize in the local press. C. They admitted their mistake in public in the gymnasium. D. They would never drink any alcohol throughout their life. (3)Which word best describes the coach Rainville? A. Indifferent. B. Strict. C. Stubborn. D. Cruel. (4)Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Growing up with pain B. A bad mistake C. Team rules are everything D. Basketball girls in high school 【答案】(1)A

高三英语阅读理解专项训练100(附答案)含解析

高三英语阅读理解专项训练100(附答案)含解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 When you go to the doctor, you like to come away with a prescription. It makes you feel better to know you will get some medicine. But the doctor knows that medicine is not always needed. Sometimes all a sick person needs is some reassurance that all will be well. In such cases the doctor may prescribe a placebo. A placebo is a sugar pill, a harmless shot, or ail empty capsule. Even though they have no medicine in them, these things seem to make people well. The patient thinks it is medicine and begins to get better. How does this happen? The study of the placebo opens up new knowledge about the way the human body can heal itself. It is as if there was a doctor in each of us. The doctor will heal the body for us if we let it. But it is not yet known just how the placebo works to heal the body. Some people say it works because the human mind fools itself. These people say that if the mind is fooled into thinking it got medicine, then it will act as if it did, and the body will feel better. Placebos do not always work. The success of this treatment seems to rest a lot with the relationship between the patient and the doctor. If the patient has a lot of trust in the doctor and if the doctor really wants to help the patient, then the placebo is more likely to work. So in a way, the doctor is the most powerful placebo of all. A placebo can also have bad effects. If patients expect a bad reaction to medicine, then they will also show a bad reaction to the placebo. This would seem to show that a lot of how you react to medicine is in your mind rather than in your body. Some doctors still think that if the placebo can have bad effects it should never be used. They think there is still not enough known about it. The strange power of the placebo does seem to suggest that the human mind is stronger than we think it is. There are people who say you can heal your body by using your mind. And the interesting thing is that even people who swear this is not possible have been healed by a placebo. (1)What do we know about placebo according to the passage? A. It contains some sort of medicine. B. It won't function if you are negative about medicine. C. People who don't believe placebo can't be healed by it. D. Patients and doctors know clearly how it helps to heal the body. (2)Why is the doctor sometimes the most powerful placebo? A. The patient needs help badly. B. The patient believes in the doctor. C. The doctor knows better about your body. D. The doctor has carefully studied medicine. (3)What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. The placebo. B. The bad effect. C. The body. D. The medicine.(4)What is the passage mainly about? A. Placebo:Work on Your Mind B. Placebo:The Most Powerful Medicine

But in recent years psychologists have taken quite a different view. Keith Oatley,Professor of Psychology at Glasgow University,is involved in the research which shows the fundamental importance of emotions. He believes we are very ambivalent about them:we think of our emotions as being unreasonable, but we also consider them as essential to being human. For example,Mr Spock,a character in the television series Star Trek,is superintelligent and he has no emotions at all. However,he is never made captain of the spaceship.Maybe, this is because Mr Spock is not the kind of person you can share your feelings with—a person who shows his emotions. As Professor Oatley points out,our emotions have very important functions, for example, fear. If we cross the road and a car approaches,we usually stop moving or step back.We stop what we are doing, check what we have done and pay very careful attention to the environment. The emotion of fear makes us take this small series of actions which,on average, help preserve our safety. On the other hand,if things are going well and small problems come up,we find we can solve them with the resources we have to hand.As a consequence,we tend to feel happy and usually continue doing the job. Anger is an emotion that tends to occur when someone is preventing us from doing something. Then this small “kit” of reactions enables us to prepare ourselves to be quite aggressive to that person,or to try harder, and so on. Professor Oatley believes emotions generally occur at these important moments in actions. With fear and anger our emotions make us decide to start doing something else, while with happiness they “suggest” we continue what we are already doing. 1.What’s Keith Oatley’s opinion about emotions? A.They affect reasonable thought. B.They get us into trouble. C.They are helpful to us. D.They are reasonable. 2.What does the underlined part “we are very ambivalent about them”in Paragraph 2 mean? A.We have contradictory feelings towards emotions. B.We have similar ideas of emotions.

The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same tome. In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong. In Chicago, the mayor(市长)appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point ,putting all their energy And passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself. Ultinatel was Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process. or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word. ( ) 1. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy? A. To invite authors to guide readers.

Scientists at the University of California Berkeley, US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do immoral things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNA《美国国家科学院院刊》). They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive ears ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving mow modest cars. Finally, it just makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self- intere st,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study. Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts(本能)and values in different ways.
