Given that the whole global population is aging, many governments are considering pushing forward the policy of raising retirement age, which, gives arise to a hot dispute on the internet. Many officials claim that taking into consideration longer life expectancy, there is an urgent need for a change in working time. Alongside that, they argue that the policy enable China to avoid a great number of emerging employment problems. While their opponents hold that the policy, on the contrary, may lead to a higher unemployment rate among the youngster and are against Chinese tradition. Weighing the benefits over the demerits, I am in line with the first group.

From the macro perspective, first of all, we are living in a time when there is an unstoppable trend of aging and born rate reducing. In other words, while mass become older and older, less and less children are born. Raising retirement age will have a positive impact on the coming labor shortage. Moreover, it will fully unleash human resource. Prolonging working time will also help governments relieve their burden on old age pension payment. Since launching of various pension schemes, governments have been under extensive pressure of paying the bills. And thanks to the global aging, the circumstance deteriorates.

From the personal perspective, deferring retirement age improves the income of would-be retirees. Retirement income, in most case, is lower than working wage. With more money, retirees will have more choices of retirement activities. And chances are that some retirees are at a loss when they stop their career. In this case, prolonging working time allows would-be retirees to have more time to prepare for their retirement life.

All in all, raising retirement age will not only do good to our governments in relieving their burden on paying old age pension but also brings benefits to us individuals in bring the best of ourselves.
