When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do?” as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation(翻译)?It must be a wrong sentence in your own language.

Languages do not just have different sounds, they are different in many ways. It’s important to master(掌握) the rules for word order in the study of English, too. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener can’t understand the speaker’s sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.

“She only likes apples.” “Only she likes apples.”

“I have seen the film already.” “I have already seen the film.”

When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(精神实质) of the language and use it as the English speaker does.

A. we shouldn’t put every word into our own langua ge

B. is different from “Only she likes apples.”

C. means “She likes fruit except apples.”

A. Different Orders, Different Meanings.

I remembered many interesting things when I was a doctor. But there was one terrible thing always staying in my mind.

One evening, when I was preparing medicines for some sick people, the doctor,

who was also my teacher, asked me to take his stethoscope (听诊器) for him. It was in the room at the end of the building. The lamps gave poor light. I opened the door. To my horror, there were two dead people lying on both sides, with white clothes on their faces. I was much frightened. My hair stood on end. I thought if one of them came back to life, he or she would catch hold of me and would say, “I am not dead.” What would happen? But I had a nother thought. I should be brave (勇敢)enough. I had to take the stethoscope for my teacher. I shut my eyes and walked quickly towards the desk. I took the stethoscope in my hand and rushed out as fast as I could. When I handed it to my teacher, he said I had brought him the wrong one. I had to go back again. This time I was not as frightened as before. When my teacher saw the stethoscope, he smiled and said, “You have passed your exam.”

How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of class? What about when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy?

Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you’re around other people. Experts have found that more than 80 percent of middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.

It’s OK if it takes you a while to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody gets a little shy sometimes. It’s just a case of how much.

Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for their food. Some are afraid of meeting new people,

so they seldom(很少) go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.

If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing something you want to do, being shy isn’t a very big problem. Some experts say shy people are cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.

You see, being shy isn’t all bad. But remember not to let good opportunities(机

会) pass by just because of it! If you have to sing a song at a birthday party

or practice your spoken English in front of others, just do it! There’s nothing

to be afraid of.

66. The underlined phrase “to feel yourself again”in the third paragraph means “________”.

A. to find oneself

B. to be oneself

C. to enjoy oneself

67. What kind of shyness can be bad according to the passage?

A. You find it hard to enjoy yourself at a party.

B. You feel a little nervous when you go to a new place.

C. You seldom go outside, afraid of meeting new people.

68. If you have to practice your spoken English in class, ________.

A. just do it

B. just refuse to do it

C. you’d better ask someone to help you

69. We can infer (推理) from the passage that ________.

A. kids are all born shy

B. you can’t change yourself

C. shy people can also be successful

70. What’s the best title for this passage?

A. Are you too shy?

B. Think more for others!

C. Find out what you’re like!

E.

Sara

A: If you feel the need to show your love for your parents, that's great. Make sure you remember their birthdays and buy them cards and presents. Try to spend time with your parents. When he knocked on the door, his dog came out and was not friendly to him. His wife hurried to drive it away. The next morning he went to see a doctor. The doctor looked over his eyes carefully and gave him some medicine. Before he left, he told the doctor about his dog. When he heard this , the doctor began to laugh and said,” Maybe something is wrong with your dog’s eyes, too.”

When Mr Shute got home he told his wife about it. She said, “I’m afraid it’s true. If a thief comes into our house, it can’t see him and he’ll steal something here.”

Mr Shute thought his wife was right. He then made his dog take his medicine instead.
