A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his spare time. Hobbyists raise pets, build model ships, weave baskets, watch birds, hunt animals, climb mountains, raise flowers, fish, ski, skate, and swim. Hobbyists also paint pictures, attend concerts and plays, and perform on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies, and from shells to stamps.

People take up hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge, and relaxation. Sometimes they even produce financial profit(利润). Hobbies help people balance between work and play. Hobbies also offer interesting activities for persons who have retired. Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow a satisfying hobby, regardless of (不论)his age, position, or income.

Hobbies can help a person?s mental and physical health. Doctors have found that hobbies are valuable in helping patients recover from physical or mental illness. Hobbies give bedridden or wheel-chair patients something to do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat patients by having them take up interesting hobbies or pastimes.

In early times, most people were too engaged in making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who had leisure(休闲)did enjoy hobbies. The ancient Egyptians played games with balls made of wood or pottery.

People today have more time than ever before for hobbies. Machines have reduced the amount of time they must spent on their jobs. Hobbies provide variety for workers who do the same monotonous(单调的) tasks all day long. More people are retiring than ever before, and at an earlier age. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their newly found leisure hours.

Sir William Osier, a famous Canadian doctor, expressed the value of hobbies by saying, “No man is really happy or safe without a hobby.”

In America, drivers? educ ation is part of the regular high school curriculum(课程). Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver?s education. However, unlike other courses, it is not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.

The course is divided up into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations, and driving time to practise driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students study the basic traffic laws from a text to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone who wants to get a driver?s license.

Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel (steering wheel) and practise starting steering, backing up, parking, switching lanes, turning corners, and all the other maneuvers (操作) required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students are divided up into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for two hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time per outing. The instructor and “driver” sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.

After the student has passed the driver?s education course and reached the appropriate age to drive(this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old),they can go to a designated(指定的) state office to take their driver?s test, which is made up of an eye examination, a written test, and a road test. It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy. After all, their forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day. Some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people elsewhere who liked to eat frog's legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own, and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.

This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future, but the dream didn't last long.

The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.

The villagers decided that they couldn't just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.

Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn't been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.

Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning.

Dear Mr. Zhang,

We have held a discussion about whether it is good for a top student to share a desk with a slower student.

Some top students are for the idea. As they know, everyone has strengths as well as weaknesses. Although slower students are not good at lessons, they might do well in other fields like sports or arts. Therefore, they can learn from each other and develop a friendship. In addition, top students can help slower ones gain self-confidence by helping them with their lessons.

However, others don?t hold the same view. They think some slower students usually have certain bad habits like talking and sleeping in class, which may distract them. Besides, slower students may often ask them questions, which will waste their time.

In my opinion, I?d like to share a desk with a slower student so that we can learn from each other and make progress together.

Yours,

Li Hua

M: I?ve been invited to a dinner party tomorrow. What time should I arrive for that? W: On time or even a few minutes late---but not early.

M: Why?

W: Because the host and hostess are running around finishing last minutes chores.

M: I never thought of that. But won?t the dinner get cold if people come several minutes late?

W: No.Generally it?s planned so that when you arrive you get a drink and then chat with people for a while. When all the guests have arrived and finished their drinks, you sit down to dinner or go to the buffet table.

M: What if I get caught in a traffic jam or the subway is late or something else happens and I?m going to be really late.

W: You must call and say you are coming, but you will be late.

M: Oh, I see.

W: By the way, a dinner invitation doesn?t call for you to “eat and run”.

M: What do you mean?

W: People do talk to each other during the meal, but after dinner they also sit around and talk. If the conversation is good , it might go on until 11:00 or 12:00 or even late into the night. I think it?s a good opportunity to practice your oral English.

M: I agree. I?ll tell mum maybe I will be late back home.

Text10

More and more women in the United States and in many other countries participate in sports and games. This has not always been the case, however. In fact, women had not been as active in sports as men until the twentieth century.

Part of the explanation for this that women simply did not have time. Many women cooked, cleaned and took care of children. They were so busy that they did not have time for sports. A second reason, especially in the late nineteenth century, is that most still viewed women as weak and delicate beings. In the Victorian era, people thought that is was unladylike for a woman to be involved in any sporting activity.

There have been changes in both the view of women in the modern world, and also changes within the world of sports. These changes have allowed many more women to participate in sports. The general view of women has changed greatly since the Victorian era. Women are no longer considered delicate. People do not think it is unladylike for a women to compete in sports. Women who win in sports activities are highly regarded. Many women now take part in sports and games of many different kinds, and enjoy doing so.
