Introduction

Withering Heights is the unique remarkable novel written by Emily Bronte, who is one of the most famous novelists of the 19th century in English Literature, and whose novel is over-time. It is considered as a powerful and strange book. The author seizes primary images and enters into the savage field of spirits by her poetic imagination, showing us the conflicts between the keen heart-storm and the savage wilderness. Wuthering Heights is the only one not dwramed by the time dust, and it is regarded as a genius work which can be compared with Shakespeare’s playwrights. In the opinion of many critics, Emily was the most gifted of the three Bronte Sisters, Ralph Fox, the revolutionary critic of England, writes: “Wuthering Heights is certainly the novel which becomes poetry, it is beyond all doubt one of the most extraordinary books which human genius has ever produced, yet it is these things only because it is a cry of despairing agony wrung from Emily by life itself.” Fox stated that Charlotte expressed the thwarted, lonely lives of these girls in the sublimated love of Rochester and Jane Eyre...Emily could not be satisfied with this. Her love must triumph, and in the violent, horror-ladden atmosphere of the stone farmhouse on the moors, it did triumph.Chatharine and Heathciff are the revenge of love against the 19th century, and he also regarded Withering Heights as one of the three greatest books of the age, besides, the writer of the future will acknowledge them as his inspiration when he attempts the task of conquering reality. Meanwhile, Virginia Woolf also remarks: “Withering Heights is more difficult to understand than Jane Eyre, because Emily is a greater novelist than Charlotte.”（Liu,2007）From the views of them, we can find: This novel is not a pretty love story; rather, it is a swirling tale of largely unlikable people caught up in obsessive love that turns to dark madness. It is cruel, violent, dark and brooding, and many people find it extremely unpleasant, the soul of this novel is love, hatred, revenge, and the recovery of human nature of Heathciff. The total novel is surrounded by the conflict of love and hate, and the whole novel is filled with the deep love between Heathcliff and

Catherine, while you can also feel the revenge and hate through the whole novel. Zhang (2004) argues that Although considerable research has been devoted to the characters of this novel, rather less attention has been paid to the love and hate of Heathcliff, which is the main theme of this novel, and interests readers since its publishment, and the story of hate and love helps reveal human nature: love, hatred, jealousness and consistency, under the influence of environmental factors, such as: material wealth, social status. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation is to study the love and hate of Heathcliff. This paper begins by the love between Heathcliff and Catherine, it will go on with his hate, finally, the paper concludes by the re-establishment of harmony between love and hate.

Chapter One

The Love of Heathcliff

In Wuthering Heights,Heathcliff is the main character, whose complicated character is coming from his own complicated life background, when you read this novel, you will summarize that Heathcliff has a strong personality, even though his revenge is cold, cruel, and even incomprehensible, but he does these entirely due to the loss of love course. He does these totally for his love, when you think of these, dare to say he is a devil? Do you want to hatred him? on the point of my view, he is a poor man, and he just pursues his own love persisitently.He struggled in the conflict between love and hatred in his inner heart. This part has been organized in the following way.

I. The importance of his love

Love and hate is the main theme of this novel, love plays an indispensable role in human’s life, love is the basic right of life, and love is the instinctive needs of human. Imagine that if there were no love, what kind of world would be? What kind of our human beings would be? Loving and being loved is the most beautiful thing in the world, nobody possesses the right to deprive it arbitrarily, and love is the best way to nurture good nature. L et’s look at H eathcliff’s whole life: he pursuits his love, and love makes him like a human, and love lets him believe this world, limits his brutality. For Heathcliff, Catherine’s love is the whole support of his spiritual world. He can bear any contempt and insult from Hindley, but can not bear the separation from Catherine. He holds firmly to the belief that they are the same in the depths of human nature and nothing can divide them. But Catherine betrays their love. For Heathcliff, Catherine is sole consolation and hope in his lonely and strenuous life that supports his whole world and contains his spirit and emotion entirely. For Heathcliff, he has to overcome great hindrance to get his union with Catherine. He regards her as his life, his only meaning of life. As long as he possesses Catharine’s

love, no matter what tough and pain he can overcome, his spirit can not be out of balance. Whereas, once he lost her love, his whole life changes, and he is swallowed by hatred, revenge, violence, etc.As we all know, love deeper, hate deeper.

II. The embodiments of his love

“What can you mean by talking in this way to me?” How--how dare you-- under my roof?--God! He’s mad to speak so!' And he struck his forehead with rage.” (Bronte, 2004) This is that Heathcliff howls to Mr.Lookwood, for Mr.Lookwood entered into this house, which has his memory about Catherine. He can not bear anyone else entering into this house, from which we can feel his everlasting love to Catharine. Maybe, he is a devil to others, but to Catherine he is a lover. He got on to the bed, and wrenched open the lattice, bursting, as he pulled at it, into an uncontrollable pas sion of tears. “Come in! Come in!” he sobbed. “Cathy, do come. Oh do--once more! Oh! My heart's darling! Hear me this time, Catherine, at last!”(Bronte, 2004) Mr.Lookwood witnesses it involuntarily, he calls to Catharine’s ghost, and from above we can feel his pain and his pure love to Catharine. These words incorporate his melancholy, toil, and pain. Heathcliff regards Catherine as his own life and soul, and said to his Catherine: “If I ever forget you, it means that I have forgotten my own existence.”“Oh, Cathy! Oh, my life! How can I bear it? (Bronte, 2004) This is the first sentence he utters when he knows the news of Catharine’s death, in a tone that does not seek to disguise his despair. From these sentences we can feel he loves her more than his life and he love to be loved by her. His destiny is to love her, and he is blinded by her light. All of his life is for his only wish—Catherine’s love, and he uses his whole life to attain it. Meanwhile, he will forget his cruel, at this moment, he is only a poor man who can not save his love, and his lover will leave him eternally, and he howls: “I can not live with out my life; I can not live with out my soul.” (Bronte, 2004) Love is the foundation of his life, once he loses his love, his life become meaningless; however, his love never vanishes with Catherine’s death.

As for Heathcliff, readers find it hard not to sympathize with his unfortunate,

and readers find it hard not to be moved by his deeply love. Readers is to pity for his unfair destiny. Finishing the novel; most readers have forgiven him because the character of Heathcliff has not only his deep hatred for everyone else, also the strong love of Catherine, and this love deeply shake most readers. He is definitely not a devil without human feelings, he has tremendous emotion, he loved so deeply that just like a burning fire, the love between Heathciff and Catherine draws an eternal Love, which shakes the whole human, even ghost. Even we can say that his cruelty is merely an expression of his frustrated love for Catherine. In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff imprints deeply in readers’ heart.

Chapter Two

The Hatred of Heathcliff

For Heathcliff, Catherine’s betrayal is the beginning of his own personal hell; for Heathcliff，Catherine’s betrayal is the turning point of his life; For Heathcliff, Catherine’s betrayal leads him to cruel punishment or treatment to anyone who has relationship with Catherine or anyone he hates. So his purpose of returning to Wuthering Heights is to begin his ravage and non-human revenge, especially after Catherine’s death. In him, we see a most terrible picture of scornful love turned into desperate hatred and revenge that is destructive to both the avenger and the revenged.

Let’s analyze his revenge: He revenge s to two generations, at first, he makes all the property in the name of his and Hindley indulges in drunk, gambling and dies from them, and he elopes with Isabella and marries her in order to revenge Linton, but he thinks it is not enough, and then he aims his hatred at the second generation. He controls Wuthering Heights, and takes an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth; He trains Hareton as an idiot and lives in the shadow of him. In order to defraud Edger of his money and belongings, he urges Cathy, daughter of Edger, to marry with his dying son by cheat. Besides, he torments Hareton and Cathy physically and mentally.

I. His revenge to the first generation

Isabella writes to Nelly, “Is Mr. Heathcliff a man? If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil? … A tiger or a venomous serpent coul not rouse terror in me equal to that which he wakens.” Nelly says he is “rough as a saw edge and hard as whinstone!” Even Catherine says: “What is Heathcliff--an unreclaimed creature, without refinement--without cultiva tion; an arid wilderness of furze and whinstone.”(Zhang, 2005) we can find that Heathcliff has changed; he becomes a devil, a murderous animal, just as a tiger, a lion, wolf. If you break report writing down into its constituent parts, it is not as complex as it seems and there is no reason to be worried. Scientific reports, for the vast majority of disciplines, are all structured in the same way; if you follow this structure then you cannot go far wrong. It is useful to note that every scientific discipline, every university and even supervisors can have their own preferred methods of constructing reports; with this in mind, do not be afraid to ask for advice on the best research paper format for your report. LAYOUT AND LENGTH For most assessed reports you will be told how long it should be, generally by the number of words. This is generally only a guide and is not set in stone; in most cases this limit does not include appendices and citation pages. If you plan to write for a specific journal, a good advice is to check the research paper outline of some of the articles to get a better idea on how to write your article. Here are a few outline samples. If your report is complex and strays over this limit, there should be no problem, as long as you have not repeated yourself or filled your work with irrelevant information. It is good practice to bear in mind that the appendix is there for any information that you feel could be omitted from the report without affecting the clarity. Your report can be shorter than the advised word limit if everything that needs to be included is there. This is preferable than trying to pad out the report in order to fulfill some ‘word count’ facility on the computer, risking being penalized for irrelevance.
