2、 Rain beat against the window, matching my mood. I should have known that my new job at the hospital was too good to be true. Throughout the day, rumors (传言) warned that the newest employee from each department would be laid off. I was the newest one in the training

department.

My boss appeared. “You probably know we’re cutting back,” he said. “Administration wants us to offer outplacement classes to help those employees find other jobs, showing them how to act in an interview, for example.” “Fine,” I answered unwillingly, not knowing what else to say.

I decided to go home early that day. In the hall, I met the lady who brought us cookies every Friday. She was a little woman with gray hair. Only her head and the top of her green apron were visible over the cart (小车) loaded with cleaning supplies. At least she had a job!

At the final meeting, laid-off workers formed a line at the door. A colleague whispered, “I can’t believe our Cookie Lady is being laid off. We’ll miss her as much as we’ll miss her cookies.” When the colleague spoke to her in Spanish,

I knew my classes would be useless for her and I realized how much better off was than this poor woman.

I decided to do something for her. I wrote to a newspaper expressing how I felt about the unselfishness of the Cookie Lady who needed a job. A few days later, my article appeared in the newspaper and the Cookie Lady was allowed to stay in her position. On the same day, I received a letter, which seemed so unlikely that I read it twice. “An editor of a local magazine likes your piece and wants you to call her nex t time you’re looking for work …”

3、 More than nine out of 10 young people expose themselves to the blue light from smartphones before bed, causing problems with sleep. A new survey also shows more than 28 million people in the UK regularly get no more than seven hours sleep a night. Prof Richard Wiseman, who commissioned the YouGov poll described the findings as "extremely worrying". Of the 2,149 adults questioned, 78% said they used electronic devices before going to bed. This rose to 91% among the 18 to 24-year-olds questioned in the survey.

Getting less than seven hours sleep a night is below the recommended guidelines, and is associated with a range of problems, including an increased risk

of weight gain, heart attacks, diabetes and cancer. "The blue light from these devices suppresses(压制)the production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, so it's important to avoid them before bed time," said Prof Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire.

Everyone needs different amounts of sleep, but adults are generally thought to require a minimum of seven to eight hours a night. Teenagers are recommended to get more, about nine hours. The proportion(比例)of people thought to be getting too little sleep had risen by a fifth since a "bedroom poll" conducted last year by the National Sleep Foundation.

Last week revealed opticians were warning that overuse of smartphones may be increasing people's risk of eye damage. Optician Andy Hepworth said: "Blue violet light is potentially harmful to the back of your eyes. "So over a long period of time it can damage your eyes. When you're looking at a smart phone, the light peaking out of that is blue violet. The news came as a survey of 2,000 people suggests under-25s check their phones 32 times a day.

1.The purpose of the passage is to ______.

A.stress that people don’t use smartphones.

C.Of the 2,149 adults questioned, 91% said they used electronic devices before going to bed.

D.The news came as a survey of 2,000 people suggests under-25s check their phones

30 times a day.

3.According to what Andy Hepworth said, overuse of smartphones may be increasing people's risk of __________.

4、Many of us have read stories or seen films about space creatures. They come to the Earth in spaceships that look like flying saucers. These space-creatures do not look like human beings at all,but they are usually very intelligent(聪明).In one film, they were tiny little men with large heads. When they landed on the Earth, they knew exactly what to do. They went straight to the President's palace and made him their prisoner!

The stories about space creatures are,of course, not true. Space-creatures exist only in story books and films, just like giants and fairies. But many scientists are asking this question—“Is there life on other planets?”There are millions of planets in the universe, and the Earth is just one of them. Could there be living things on other planets? Many people believe that the other planets in the universe are most suitable for living things.

Are scientists sure that there is no life on other planets?

At this stage we still cannot be sure. All the planets, except the moon and Mars, are so far away that it will take hundreds of years for our spaceships to reach them. 1.The BEST title for the passage is“________”.

A.Scientific Wonders—Space-creatures B.Is There Life on Other Planets? C.Are Scientists Sure? D.Stories about Space-creatures 2.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

Tips for Getting Promoted

I frequently hear complaints about the promotion process. As a matter of fact, there is little practical action every employee should be taking to increase their chance of being promoted.

①______________ The law of association is powerful. If you want to become more intelligent, spend time with intelligent people. If you want to be a great product manager, spend your time with great product managers. ②______________ They've done something right. Spend time with the very best people and you will become more like them.

Participation is highly recommended. Just like attending language classes in high school, participation is essential if you want to do well. Y ou’ve got to speak up, participate in meetings, and interact effectively and regularly with your team members. If you don't participate, people will assume you have nothing to contribute. ③______________

Communication. No one knows better than you about all that you are doing. It's important that you create an effective method of communicating your accomplishments to your manager in a manner that suits his or her style, not yours. ④______________ Otherwise, you will have to accept the fact that your manager has a very limited understanding of your contributions. Limited understanding leads to slow promotions.

Too many people cross their fingers and hope all things will work out. They even take action or make demands that are counterproductive. ⑤______________ A.Those who are considered to have nothing to contribute generally do not get promoted.

B. Stop spending time with the wrong people.

C. A few reports at the end of each week will keep your boss informed.

D. Stay with the right people.

E. If you want to get promoted, then associate with those in your field who have been promoted.

F. I often hear, "My manager doesn't ask me for weekly reports."

G.Try the tips for the next six months and see if the outcome improves.

Leadership i s the most significant word in today’s competitive business environment because it directs the manager of a business to focus inward on their personal abilities and style. Experts on l eadership will quickly point out that “how things get done” influences the success of the outcomes and indicates a right way and a wrong way to do things. When a noted leader on the art of management, Peter Drucker, coined the phrase“Management is doing th ings right; leadership is doing the right things”, he was seeking to clarify the distinctions he associates with the terms. When Stephen Covey, founder and director of the Leadership Institute, explored leadership styles in the past decade, he focused on the habits of a great number of highly effective individuals. His Seven Habits of Highly Effective People became a popular bestseller very quickly. His ideas forced a reexamination of the early leadership example, which centered on the feature that was found in the character ethic(道德准则) and the personality ethic. The former ethic suggested success was founded on modesty, loyalty, courage, patience and so on. The personality ethic suggested it was one’s attitude, not behavior, that inspired success, and this ethic was founded on a belief of positive mental attitude. In contrast to each of these ideas, Covey advocates that leaders need to understand universal principles of effectiveness, and he highlights how vital it is for leaders to first personally manage themselves if they are to enjoy any hope of outstanding success in their work environments. To achieve a desired vision for your business, it is essential that you have a personal vision of where you are headed and what you value. Business leadership means that managers need to “put first things first,” which implies that before leading others, you need to be clear on your own values, abilities, and strengths and be seen as trustworthy. 如:suggest(建议), insist(坚持要求),demand(要求)、ask(请求)等后接的宾语从句中都 要用虚拟语气。善于归纳近义词、同义词,如:在复习join的用法时,能够联系join in,take part in,join sb in归纳复习之后,要做 对应练习。

阅读理解 A [2019·黑龙江省质量检测]“If you are cold, it will warm you; if you are too heated, it will cool you; if you are depressed, it will cheer you; if you are exhausted, it will calm you.” The poem best identifies the passion for tea in Britain. Outside of the United Kin gdom, many people refer to afternoon tea as “high tea”. Afternoon tea, also known as low tea, is what most people think of when they hear “high tea”. It involves things like manners, lace (蕾丝) and light meals such as cookies and finger sandwiches. It is ty pically served in the mid-afternoon and it was traditionally served on low tables, hence its two names. Legend has it that afternoon tea was started in the mid-1800s by the Duchess of Bedford. Around that time, kerosene (煤油) lamps were introduced into wealthier homes and eating a late dinner (around 8 or 9 p.m.) became fashionable. This increasingly late dinner was one of the only two meals each day, and the other was a mid-morning one. The story goes that the Duchess found herself with a “sinking feeling”. This came from hunger during the long wait between meals. She decided to invite friends over for various snacks and tea. The idea of an afternoon tea gathering spread across high society and became a favorite pastime of females for leisure. Later, it spread to other social groups. However, the British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had a meal about midday, and a meal after work, between five and seven o'clock. This meal was called “high tea” or just “tea”. Traditionally eaten early eve ning, high tea was a substantial meal that combined delicious sweet food, such as cookies, cakes or tea bread, with heavy food, such as cheese on toast, cold meats and poached eggs on toast. This meal is now often replaced with a supper due to people eating their main meal in the evening rather than at midday.
