On January29th,the White House is holding“Big Block of Cheese Day”.Inspired by the7th American President Andrew Jackson,“members of the Administration will face social media for a day long‘open house’to answer questions from everyday Americans in real-time.”Here’s the story of Jackson’s big cheese.

The American people loved Jackson.Jackson loved cheese. What made a better gift for him than a large wheel of cheese?Dairy farmer Colonel Thomas S.Meacham hit on this idea in1835,and he knew how to craft a titanic cheese. The fruit of Meacham’s labor was a wheel that was four feet in diameter(直径)and two feet thick, weighing nearly1,400pounds,and was wrapped in a giant belt with the words like,“The Union,it must be Preserved.”This cheese first appeared at an1835patriotic(爱国的)celebration in Oswego,New York. After the locals all got a good look at the cheese and felt themselves well up with national pride, the wheel was loaded onto a ship and set sail for its new home on Pennsylvania Avenue.

2016年嘉兴市高三教学测试(二)·英语第3页(共10页)

At some point,we’ve all received a thoughtful, touching, impractical gift and wondered,“What the hell am I going to do with this?”Jackson obviously had the same reaction when the cheese finally arrived at the White House.According to19th-century biographer James Parton’s Life of Andrew Jackson, the old general gave much of the cheese to his friends, but he was still left with an absurdly outsized block.Jackson could manage the Bank of the United States, but he was helpless against such a large wheel of cheese.

By1837Jackson’s second term was winding down, and he wasn’t about to carry a two-year-old mountain of cheese with him when he left office. So he decided to hold his last public reception(招待会)at the White House. It turned out a wise move;there’s nothing people love more than free food. The reception’s10,000visitors attacked the wheel of cheese with such enthusiasm that the entire thing was gone within two hours.

The reception took care of the cheese problem, but the cheese certainly wasn’t forgotten. There are certain disadvantages of sending a big block of cheese to a warm climate like Washington and having it sit around for a couple of years—a block of that size can give off some serious cheese-smell.Jackson’s successor(继任者),Van Buren, must have found this out the hard way.In the room where the cheese was cut,he had to air the carpet for many days;to take away the curtains and to paint and white-wash before he could eventually get the victory over it.

This time of year, many Europeans are looking forward to their month-long holiday in August.Workers in America, however, can already feel breathless with a collared shirt around their neck in90-degree heat as we continue trying to be productive. As the Cadillac advertisement that runs nonstop during Super Bowl season is hammered home, the European style is to take time off while the American style is to work like a horse.Cadillac may be proud of how hard Americans work, but we may be hurting, not helping, ourselves with our out-of-control practice.

The United States is the only advanced country that doesn’t guarantee that its citizens will get paid vacation time and holidays.European countries, meanwhile, ensure at least20days of paid vacation, with some going as high as30days,and most rich countries make sure workers get at least six paid holidays. That leaves nearly a quarter of Americans without any access to paid vacation time.

The chances are equally slim for workers looking to take time off for other reasons. If they or their family members get sick, there’s no guarantee that they’ll be able to take a paid day off to deal with it,and about40percent can’t.Twenty-two other developed countries ensure paid sick leave. When a couple adopts a child or has a newborn, they’re only guaranteed 12weeks of unpaid time off, unlike actually every other country that guarantees paid leave. We’re even the one of just16countries that doesn’t make sure that workers get at least some time off during the seven-day week. That the weekend most of us enjoy comes Friday night is not backed up by American policy, but instead is voluntary extra work.

But it’s not just policy fueling our overwork;it’s also cultural.Professionals, managers, and executives with smartphones spend72hours a week(including the weekend)checking work e-mail.It’s become a nonstop world, especially for professional workers. Perhaps it would be worth all of this if working longer produced better results, fueled the economy(经济),and created wealth for everyone. But that’s not likely.Taking some time off actually improves a worker’s productivity at work.A study from Ernst&Young found that every ten hours of vacation time taken by an employee promoted her year-end performance rating by8percent.Former NASA scientists found that people who took vacations experienced an82percent increase in job performance upon their return, with longer vacations making more of an effect than short ones.Putting in too many hours,on the other hand, does the opposite.More than60hours a week will create small productivity at first, but it’ll start to decline again after three or four weeks.

But what is it all for?Americans are working harder but not seeing the fruits of their labor.Workers, white collar and blue collar alike, have seen a decade go by without much of an increase in salaries despite their increasing productivity. The infamous one percent has taken home47percent of total income growth between1976and2007.It turns out that being

The older I get,the more I enjoy Saturday mornings.Perhaps it’s the quiet loneliness that comes with being the first to rise,or maybe it’s the unlimited joy of not having to be at work.Either way,the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.

A few weeks ago, what began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time.Let me tell you about it.

I turned the volume up on my radio, and I heard an older sounding man with a golden voice. You know the kind,he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business himself. He was talking about“a thousand marbles(弹珠)”to someone named“Tom”.

I was curious and sat down to listen to what he had to say.“Well,Tom,it sure sounds like you’re busy with your job.I’m sure they pay you well, but it’s a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much.Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet.”

“Let me tell you something Tom,something that has helped me keep a good viewpoint on my own priorities(优先考虑).”And that’s when he began to explain his theory of“a thousand marbles”.

“You see,I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic(算术).The average person lives about75years.I know, some live more and some live less but on average, folks live about 75years.Now then,I multiplied75by52and I came up with3900which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime.”

“It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail,”he 2016年嘉兴市高三教学测试(二)·英语第7页(共10页)

went on,“and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays.I got to thinking that if I lived to be75,I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy.”“So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had.I ended up with 1000marbles.I took them home and put them inside a large clear plastic container next to the radio.Every Saturday since then,I have taken one marble out and thrown it away.I found that by watching the marbles decrease,I focused more on the really important things in life. There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.”

“Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning,I took the very last marble out of the container.I figure if I make it until next Saturday then I have been given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all use is a little more time.”

“It was nice to talk to you Tom,I hope you spend more time with your loved ones, and I hope to meet you again someday.Have a good morning!”

You could have heard a pin drop when he finished.Even the show host didn’t have anything to say for a few moments.I guess he gave us all a lot to think about.I had planned to do some work that morning, and then go to the gym.Instead,I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss.“Come on honey,I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast.”“What brought this on?”she asked with a smile.“Oh,nothing special,it’s just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids.Hey,can we stop at a toy store while we’re out?I need to buy some marbles.”

第二节:下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句(第61~65题)。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出适合各段落的首句,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。

A.Work out a realistic timetable.

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/f5517479.html,bine the goals for your life.

C.Consider the skills you can offer.

D.Attempt volunteering as a family.

E.Start with issues important to you.

F.Create new volunteer opportunities.

How to Volunteer Wisely

With busy lives,it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are huge to you, your family, and your community. The right match can help you find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Volunteering can also help protect your mental and physical health. Here are some tips on how to volunteer wisely.

61.

Look for a group that works with what you feel strongly about You might already be giving money to one of these organizations, and that might be a good place to begin your volunteer experience. If you can’t find such an organization, here’s a challenging thought: why not start one yourself?

62.

Many positions require a volunteer who has previous familiarity with certain equipment, such as computers,or who possesses certain talents, such as ability in athletics or communications. For one of these positions you might decide to do something comparable to what you do on the job during your workday,or something that you already enjoy as a hobby.

63.

Look for volunteer opportunities that will also help you achieve your other dreams for your life. For example,if you want to lose a few extra pounds, pick an active volunteer opportunity, such as cleaning a park or working with kids.Or,if you’ve been meaning to take a cooking class, try volunteering at a food bank that teaches cooking skills. 64.

Make sure the volunteer hours you want to give fit into your busy life,so that you don’t upset your family, exhaust yourself, disappoint the organization you’re trying to help or neglect your job.Do you want a long-term assignment or something temporary? If you are unsure about your availability,or want to see how the work suits you before making a commitment, see whether the organization will start you out on a limited number of hours until you get the feel of things.Better to start out slowly than to promise yourself a schedule you can’t or don’t want to fulfill.

65.

Think about looking for a volunteer opportunity suitable for parents and children to do together,or for a husband and wife to take on as a team. When a family volunteers to work together at a nonprofit organization, the experience can bring them closer together, teach young children the value of giving their time and effort, introduce everyone in the family to skills and experiences never before met,and give the entire family a shared experience as a wonderful family memory.

People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. 2016年浙江新高考英语题型解读—概要写作 一、2016年浙江新高考《考试说明》英语写作样题 第二节:概要写作(满分25分) 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。 Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is no thing fixed about attitudes to dirt. In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block o ut disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up t he skin and let ills in. A particular danger was though to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 15 46. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a frie ndly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman h ad taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman sho uld not go out. Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been re garded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning awa y dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of pre venting disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter th an white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too f ar? Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of diseas e. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages ch ildren to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter (后者) positi on is gaining some ground. (原创范文,仅供参考) One possible version: People have mixed opinions towards dirt on our skin.
