Anger is not wrong.I know this statement seems shocking and challenges the wildly popular “Positive Thinking” movement, which encourages us to “be full of positive energy” and “let go of our anger”.However, the truth is that anger is just an emotion, and emotions are neither right nor wrong. We do not consciously choose them.We do, on the other hand, choose how we express our emotions and there are definitely right and wrong means of expression.

The reason we're often urged to “keep a lid on” our anger is that few people ever learn proper and positive ways to express anger.Instead, we are taught that “anger is wrong”and“you should keep your anger inside”.But these messages don't change the fact that, for most of us, anger exists.

Many popular “Positive Thinking” programmes assume that success comes from “controlling our emotions”and that this can be done by simply repea ting positive statements.Interestingly, these positive slogans often include a lot of negativity. “Only losers complain!I am a winner!” is one popular saying. The belief that those who disagree with us are losers is actually quite negative and is often used as an excuse for rude language and personal attacks.

When it comes to dealing with negative situations in our daily lives, the ability to reasonably express anger or disagreement is an important skill. But we must use

balanced and non-violent methods to express our

dissatisfaction.Frustration at unfair policies or treatment can certainly cause anger, but our anger can never be an excuse for abusing family members, damaging schools, attacking doctors or most seriously, engaging in terrorism.

Instead of pretending that anger doesn't exist, we should start teaching appropriate means of dealing with anger. When we experience angry feelings in ourselves or others, what we should “let go of ” is the silly idea that we can remove anger with just a few sweet words.Instead, we should find reasonable solutions to the causes of those angry feelings. We need to accept anger as a natural emotion but stop using it as an excuse for violent and destructive behaviour.Anger isn't wrong, but failure to deal with it appropriately is.

What is the writer's opinion about the “Positive Thinking”movement? A.It can help people control their negative feelings.

B.It does not offer useful solutions for dealing with anger.

C.Following such advice can improve people's chances for success.

D.Most of the people who participate in such programmes are dishonest.

The underlined expression “keep a lid on” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “”. A.freely express

always forgive

hold inside https://www.wendangku.net/doc/fa1467115.html,pletely forget

What information would have been useful to add to the final paragraph? A.The names of some good books that talk about anger issues.

B.The viewpoints of people who hold the opposite opinion to the writer.

C.Different studies that provide some evidence supporting the writer's beliefs.

D.Some examples of how to deal with anger in a positive and beneficial way. 11.The content of this passage is mostly based on .

To start a conversation about the secret to happiness, ABC News’ health editor Dr. Richard Besser hosted a Twitter chat Tuesday. Experts from the National Institutes of Health, Mayo Clinic, Harvard University and TEDMED, as well as clinicians and people from across the country, joined the one-hour discussion. There are countless ways to measure happiness. With research on the topic increasing, researchers have carried out surveys to study people’s sense of well- being.

Angela Haupt, health and wellness editor for U.S. News and World Report, said, “Happiness indicators include life satisfaction, health and community engagement.”

@toddkashdan added that, “despite problems with self-reports, there is no better way to measure happiness than focusing on personal thoughts and feelings.”

While scientists try to find out what caused happiness, others often believe that true joy doesn’t exist. Dr Friedman, a psychiatrist at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Hospital, said that “happiness is hard to measure, but easy to recognize.”

Still, common themes about satisfaction come up in these conversations. Finding meaning in daily work was important. Indeed, researchers have found that having creative and purposeful work to do is a key factor in happiness. But people were quick to state the importance of balancing work and family obligations.

Chat participants( 参与者 ) agreed that money does not surely bring happiness. And studies agree once people’s basic needs like food and housing are met, higher incomes do little to improve your happiness. At last, people found value in their connections with others. Research shows that having support through friends, family, and social networks can bring happiness. Many agree with @drmommy, who said “I measure my happiness by the loving people that are around me.”

So, can we increase our happiness? Expressing gratitude(感激) is a possible way of feeling happiness. Researchers have found that people who regularly write down things for which they are grateful in “gratitude journals” have increased satisfaction in life, higher energy levels, and improved health. In one study, people who read a letter of

appreciation to someone in their lives prove happier almost one month later. Performing acts of kindness can raise your moods

Data show that our relationships matter, too. People who are interested in meaningful conversations with friends or family are reported to be happier than those who don’t. Close interpersonal ties and strong social support are important for happiness.

Dr Friedman may agree that . A.happiness can be measured by health B.happiness can never be measured

it’s easy to see whether one is happy

it’s hard to seek for happiness

It can be learnt that @drmommy measures his happiness by . A.health

B.purposeful work

C.meaningful work

D.friends’ support

We can learn from the passage that money can affect your happiness if you are relatively . A.poor

B.sensitive

C.unhealthy

D.hopeless

What’s the main purpose of the passage? A.To introduce us the results of a chat To give us some advice on improving happiness

To correct the misunderstanding of happiness

To remind us to find the secret to happiness

When living out our daily lives, we’re often filled with too many choices from different things around us, telling us how we can improve ourselves. 16 Too much choice is never ideal

We’re often told that having more would lead to happiness when in actual face, the opposite occurs. The key to avoiding this would be to remove everything that’s currently distracting you.

Get rid of distractions

Looking back, the time in which I was the most confused and frustrated was when

I had an abundance of choices.

17 Rather than stopping and reviewing my current circumstances, I knew that I had to remove these distractions.

18

After you gain clarity about your current issues, it is now necessary to write milestones for yourself. Having a higher purpose will drive us to improve ourselves better. Look to create larger goals for yourself firmly as it will help guide you in the direction you’ve always wanted.

Appreciate what you currently have

19 It’s human nature to overlook the things we currently have and to feel dissatisfied with them due to having obtained them. Find appreciation in the things you have and in the life you currently lead.

Be willing to fail

It is often said that if you’ve never failed, you’ve never lived. And this is something I definitely agree with. Don’t let fear stop you and learn to challenge yourself. 20

Achieve your aim and goals

Create goals and milestones

People are often faced with too many choices.

It is an opportunity to grow and to become the person you’ve always wanted to be.

The key to growing and becoming a better person is to know what you want clearly.

People often lose sight of the things around them, causing them to be worried from time to time.
