2All would resurface in his books, together with the colorful language that he soaked up with a memory that seemed phonographic. (Para.4)

3Steamboat decks teemed not only with the main current of pioneering humanity, but its flotsam of hustlers, gamblers, and thugs as well. (Para.5)

4. From them all Mark Twain gained a keen perception of the human race, of the difference between what people claim to be and what they really are. (Para.5)

5His descriptions of the rough-country settlers there ring familiarly in modern world accustomed to trend setting on the West Coast.. ―(Para.9)

6Casually he debunked revered artists and art treasures, and took unholy verbal shots at the Holy Land. (Para.13)

7The widder eats by a bell; she goes to bed by a bell; she gits up by a bell – everything's so awful reg'lar a body can't stand it." ‖

8His raft flight down the Mississippi with a runaway slave presents a moving panorama(全景)for exploration of American society. 9"... they vanish from a world where they were of no consequence; where they achieved nothing; where they were a mistake and a failure and a foolishness; where they have left no sign that they had existed –a world which will lament them a day and forget them forever.‖(from National Geographic, Sept., 1975) (Para.22)译文:―…… ‖

C. Translate Paragraphs 1 and 15 into Chinese:

1. Most Americans remember Mark Twain as the father of Huck Finn's idyllic cruise through eternal boyhood and Tom Sawyer's endless summer of freedom and adventure. Indeed, this nation's best-loved author was every bit as adventurous, patriotic, romantic, and humorous as anyone has ever imagined. I found another Twain as well – one who grew cynical, bitter, saddened by the profound personal tragedies life dealt him, a man who became obsessed with the frailties of the human race, who saw clearly ahead a black wall of night.

15. As early as 1870 Twain had experimented with a story about the boyhood adventures of a lad he named Billy Rogers. Two years later, he changed the name to Tom, and began shaping his adventures into a stage play. Not until 1874 did the story begin developing in earnest. After publication in 1876, Tom Sawyer quickly became a classic tale of American boyhood. Tom's mischievous(顽皮的)daring, ingenuity(机灵), and the sweet innocence of his affection for Becky Thatcher are almost as sure to be studied in American schools today as is the Declaration of Independence.

B.Translate the following sentences into Chinese:

1. I will wait for her in the yard that Maggie and I made so clean and wavy yesterday afternoon.

2. When the hard clay is swept clean as a floor and the fine sand around the edges lined with tiny, irregular grooves, anyone can come and sit and look up into the elm tree and wait for the breezes that never come inside the house.

3. She has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since the fire that burned the other house to the ground.

4. Sometimes I can still hear the flames and feel Maggie‘s arms sticking to me, her hair smoking and her dress falling off her in little black papery flakes.

5. There are no real windows, just some holes cut in the sides, like the portholes in a ship, but not round and not square, with rawhide holding the shutters up on the outside.

8. And one teeny faded blue piece, about the size of a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra‘s uniform that he wore in the Civil War.

B.Translate Paragraph 5, 6 and 11 into Chinese:

5. In real life I am a large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. In the winter I wear flannel nightgowns to bed and overalls during the day. I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man. My fat keeps me hot in zero weather. I can work outside all day, breaking ice to get water for washing; I can eat pork liver cooked over the open fire minutes after it comes steaming from the hog. One winter I knocked a bull calf straight in the brain between the eyes with a sledge hammer and had the meat hung up to chill before nightfall. But of course all this does not show on television. I am the way my daughter would want me to be: a hundred pounds lighter, my skin like an uncooked barley pan-cake. My hair glistens in the hot bright lights. Johnny Carson has much to do to keep up with my quick and witty tongue.

6. But that is a mistake. I know even before I wake up. Who ever knew a Johnson with a quick tongue? Who can even imagine me looking a strange white man in the eye? It seems to me I have talked to them always with one foot raised in flight, with my head turned in whichever way is farthest from them. Dee, though. She would always look anyone in the eye. Hesitation was no part of her nature.

11. I used to think she hated Maggie, too. But that was before we raised the money, the church and me, to send her to Augusta to school. She used to read to us without pity, forcing words, lies, other folks‘ habits, whole lives upon us two, sitting trapped and ignorant underneath her voice. She washed us in a river of make-be lieve, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn‘t necessarily need to know. Pressed us to her with the serious way she read, to shove us away at just the moment, like dimwits, we seemed about to understand.

B.Translate the following sentences into Chinese:

1 The rocks look more like an ancient ruin than the building blocks of a new school.

2 The previous writer, before leaving Korphe, Mortenson had driven tent pegs into the frozen soil and tied red and blue braided nylon cord to them, marking out a floor plan of five rooms he imagined for the school.

3. Koephe‘s mosque had adapted to a changing environment over the centuries, much like the people who filled it with their faith.

4. With Mortenson, he measured out the correct lengths, dipped the twine in a mixture of calcium and lime, then used the village‘s time-tested method to mark the dimensions of a construction site.

5. Haji Ali and Twaha pulled the cord taut and whipped it against the ground, leaving white lines on the packed earth where the walls of the school would stand.

6. When the trench was done, Haji Ali nodded toward two large stones that had been carved for this purpose, and six men lifted them, shuffled agonizingly toward the trench, and lower them into the corner of the foundation facing Korphe K2.

7.It was so big that it was dragging Twaha, who was doing his best just to hold on as the animal led him to its own execution.‖“公羊太大了,以致于即使塔瓦哈用尽最大的力气,也是公羊拽着他往前走,一步一步接近公羊的屠宰者”

8. ―Watching this scene straight out of the Bible stories I‘d learned in Sunday school,‖Mortenson says, ―I thought how much the different faiths had in common, how you could trace so many of their traditions back to the same root.‖“目睹这个和我在主日学校学到的《圣经》故事一模一样的场面,我不禁想到不同的信仰之间有着如此多的相似之处,而且,人们可以将其传统追溯到同一个根源。”

9. After the last bone had been beaten and the last strip of marrow sucked dry, Mortenson joined a group of men who build a fire by what would one day soon, he hoped, become the courtyard of a completed school.

10. A thousand feet below, Korphe, green with ripening barley fields, looked small and vulnerable, a life raft adrift on a sea of stone.

11. ―Long after all those rams are dead and eaten this school will still stand.‖“那只公羊很快就会被吃光,但这个学校将会长久地屹立着。”

12. ―I realized that everything, all the difficulties I‘d gone through, from the time I‘d promised to build the school, through the long struggle to complete it, was nothing compared to the sacrifices he was prepared to make for the people.“我意识到我经历的

C.Translate Paragraph 52 and 53 into Chinese:

52. When the porcelain bowls of scalding butter tea steamed in their hands, Haji Ali spoke. ―If you want to thrive in Baltistan, you must request our ways,‖ Haji Ali said, blowing on his bowl. ―The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family, and for our family, we are prepared to do anything, even die,‖he said, laying his hand warmly on Mortenson‘own. ―Doctor Greg, you must make time to share three cups of tea. We may be uneducated. But we are not stupid. We have lived and survived here for a long time.‖装着滚烫黄油奶茶的瓷碗在他们手中冒着热气。

53. ―That day, Haji Ali taught me the most important lesson I‘ve ever learned in my life,‖Mortenson says. ―We Americans think you have to accomplish everything quickly. We‘re the country of thirty-minute power lunches and two-minute football drills. Our leaders thought their ?shock and awe‘ campaign could end the war in Iraq before it even started. Haji Ali taught me to share three cups of tea, to slow down and make building relationships as important as building projects. He taught me that I had more to learn from the people I work with than I could ever hope to teach them.‖“那一天,哈吉。

2. It was stained(沾污)by this nation's original sin(原罪)of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate(僵持)until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty more years, and to leave any final resolution[(议会等的)决定]to future generations. (Para.

3. It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional(因袭的)candidate. But it is a story that has seared(枯萎;凋谢)into my genetic[遗传(学)上的]makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts—that out of many, we are truly one.

4. Instead, they expressed a profoundly(深深地)distorted(使歪扭) view of this country—a view that sees white racism as endemic[(某民族)特有的]and that elevates(抬高) what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart(绝对忠实的,可靠的)allies like Israel[以色列(亚洲)], instead of emanating(起源)from the perverse(邪恶的)and hateful ideologies(思想方式)of radical(极端的)Islam(伊斯兰教,回教).

5. Those stories—of survival, and freedom, and hope—became our story, my story; the blood that had spilled(溢出,泻出,涌流)was our blood, the tears our tears; until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel(器皿) carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. (Para.

6 The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty(残酷), the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance(无知), the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness(苦难;悲哀)and biases[成见,先入之见,偏执,偏见(opp. impartiality)]that make up the black experience in America.

7. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic(部落的)group in derogatory(贬义的)terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted(相互作用,相互影响)with

C. Translate Paragraph 17 and 18 into Chinese:

17. Given my background, my politics, and my professed(公开声称的)values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation(谴责)are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess(承认)that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets(片断)of those sermons(布道;讲道;说教)that have run in an endless loop(环状物)on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to[一致;遵照;依据(to, with)]the caricatures (丑化)being peddled[传播(谣言等);兜售(理论等)]by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way.

18. But the truth is, that isn't all that I know of the man. The man I met more than twenty years ago is a man who helped introduce me to my Christian faith, a man who spoke to me about our obligations to love one another, to care for the sick and lift up the poor. He is a man who served his country as a U.S. Marine(海军), who has studied and lectured at some of the finest universities and seminaries[神学校(院)]in the country, and who for over thirty years led a church that serves the community(社会)by doing God's work here on Earth—by housing the homeless, ministering(帮助) to the needy, providing day care services and scholarships and prison ministries(服务), and reaching out to those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Legalized discrimination—where blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted to African-American business owners, or black home owners could not access FHA(住房管理局)mortgages(抵押贷款), or blacks were excluded from unions, or the police force, or fire departments—meant that black families could not amass(积聚)any meaningful wealth to bequeath[把…传给(后代)]to future generations. That history helps explain the wealth and income gap between black and white, and the concentrated pockets(凹处,穴)of poverty that persist in so many of today's urban and rural communities.

2. And the lack of basic services in so many urban black neighborhoods—parks for kids to play in, police walking the beat[(巡警等的)巡逻区域], regular garbage pick up, and building code(规则,准则) enforcement—all helped create a cycle of violence, blight(扼杀,打击), and neglect(忽视)that continues to haunt us.

3. Just as black anger often proved counterproductive(起反作用的), so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits(犯人,罪犯)of the middle-class squeeze(挤压,压榨)—a corporate(共同的,全体的)culture rife(流行的,盛行的;普遍的;大量的,丰富的)with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices, and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many. And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns—this, too, widens the racial divide, and blocks the path to understanding.

4. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naive as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy(提名候选)—particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.

5. But I have asserted(主张,硬说;断言,声明)a firm conviction(确信,坚信)—a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in the American people—that working together we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and that in fact we have no choice if we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union.

6. In the white community, the path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails(使苦恼,使烦恼)the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination and current incidents(小事件)of discrimination—while less overt[(证据等)明显的,公开的,公然的(opp. covert)]than in the past—are real and must be addressed[应付,处理(问题等)].

7. In the end, then, what is called for is nothing more, and nothing less, than what all the world's great religions demand—that we do unto(与to 同,但不能用作不定式的符号) others as we would have them do unto us.

8. This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected.

C. Translate Paragraph 39 into Chinese:

39. For the African-American community, that path means embracing(拥抱,抱)the burdens of our past without becoming victims of our past. It means continuing to insist on a full measure(标准,准绳)of justice in every aspect of American life. But it also means binding(使…承担义务)our particular grievances (不平,不满)—for better health care, and better schools, and better jobs—to the larger aspirations(愿望,抱负)of all Americans—the white woman struggling to break the glass ceiling, the white man who has been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family. And it means taking full responsibility for our own lives—by demanding more from our fathers, and spending more time with our children, and reading to them, and teaching them that while they may face challenges and discrimination in their own lives, they must never succumb[屈服;死(to)] to despair (绝望,失望)or cynicism(愤世嫉俗); they must always believe that they can write their own destiny(命运).

Unit1 Pub Talk and the King's English 猪圈里的活猪叫pig,饭桌上吃的猪肉便成了pork(来自法语pore);地里放牧着的牛叫cattle,席上吃的牛肉则叫beef(来自法语boeuf);Chicken用作肉食时变成poultry(来自法语poulet);calf加工成肉则变成veal(来自法语vcau)。

Lesson Eleven On Getting off to Sleep谈睡眠 人真是充满矛盾啊! What a bundle of contradictions is a man! Surety, humour is the saving grace of us, for without it we should die of vexation. With me, nothing illustrates the contrariness of things better than the matter of sleep. If, for example, my intention is to write an essay, and 1 have before me ink and pens and several sheets of virgin paper, you may depend upon it that before I have gone very far I feel an overpowering desire for sleep, no matter what time of the day it is. I stare at the reproachfully blank paper until sights and sounds become dim and confused, and it is only by an effort of will that I can continue at all. Even then, I proceed half-heartedly, in a kind of dream. But let me be between the sheets at a late hour, and I can do any-thing but sleep. Between chime and chime of the clock I can write essays by the score. Fascinating subjects and noble ideas come pell-mell, each with its appropriate imagery and expression. Nothing stands between me and half-a-dozen imperishable masterpieces but pens, ink, and paper. If it be true that our thoughts and mental images are perfectly tangible things, like our books and pictures, to the inhabitants of the next world, then I am making for myself a better reputation there than I am in this place. Give me a restless hour or two in bed and I can solve, to my own satisfaction, all the doubts of humanity. When I am in the humour I can compose grand symphonies, and paint magnificent pictures.

Unit 1 Pub Talk and the King’s English 猪圈里的活猪叫pig,饭桌上吃的猪肉便成了pork(来自法语pore);地里放牧着的牛叫cattle,席上吃的牛肉则叫beef(来自法语boeuf);Chicken用作肉食时变成poultry(来自法语poulet);calf加工成肉则变成veal(来自法语vcau)。
