It was as recently as 2004 that Australia overtook France as principal supplier of wine to the UK and, briefly, looked set to push Italy into second place as most important exporter of wine to the US wine market, Australia enjoyed a brief period in the sun when the powerful critic Robert Parker espoused a series of quite different labels cooked up especially for American consumers. The staggering success of Yellow Tail, with its kangaroo label, spawned so many imitation “critter” brands, as they were known, that at the bottom end of the market, Australia came to be seen as ubiquitous and vapid. Wine Australia is doing its best to address this problem by holding tastings with key opinion-formers in key markets. And in June, amid much humbaloo, a squad of hand-picked journalists and sommeliers are invited to Landmark Australia in the Barossa Valley to be spoon-fed Australia’s finest wines by some of its most impressive winemakers.

President Reagan’s White House staff is divided into three parts: the upstairs part headed by the pragmatic James Baker; the downstairs part headed by the conservative Judge Clark; and the backstairs part patrolled by their assistants, who tell the press about the differences between upstairs and downstairs. There have always been d ifferences between most Presidents’ advisers ever since Thomas Jefferson was accused of relying on an “invisible, inscrutable” group of associates that engaged in “backstairs influence.” So the current rumors of a struggle for the President’s mind among th e Big Four-Baker, Clark, Deaver and Meese-are not new, just more public. They are the result of President Reagan’s remoteness from the day-to-day policy formation, of his habit of delegating authority, not to a single chief of staff, as President Eisenhower did, and of his tendency to avoid getting his principal aides together on a regular basis to listen patiently to their arguments and differences.

The finding show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the town. Those least at risk are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant.

Computer scientists continue to expand the frontiers of computer and information system by pioneering the designs of more complex, reliable, and powerful computers, enabling networks of computers to efficiently exchange vast amounts of information, and seeking ways to make computers behave intelligently. As computers become an increasingly integral part of modern society, computer scientists strive to solve new problems and invent better methods of solving current problems.

Uh-oh, the New Year’s just begun and already you’re finding it hard to keep those resolutions to junk the junk food, get off the couch or kick smoking. There’s a biological reason a lot of our bad habits are so hard to break-they get wired into our brains. That’s not an excuse to give up; understanding how unhealthy behaviors become ingrained has scientists learning some tricks that may help food habits replace the bad. “Why are bad habits stronger? You’re fighting against the power of an immediate reward,” says Dr. Nora, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and an authority on the brain’s pleasure pathway. “We all as creatures are hard-wired that way, to give greater value to an immediate reward as opposed to something that’s delayed.” Just how that bit of happiness turns into a habit involves a pleasure-sensing chemical. It conditions the brain to want that reward again and again-reinforcing the connection each time – especially when it gets the right cue from your environment.

Half of the world’s population could face food shortages by the end of this century due to climate change, a new study warned, Thursday. According to researchers, there is a 90 percent probability that by 2100 the minimum temperatures in the tropics and subtropical regions will be higher than the maximum so far recorded in those areas. The effect on crop-growing in those regions world be dire, according to projections based on direct observations and data culled from 23 computer models on the planet’s evolving climate patterns. “The stresses on global food production from temperature alone are going to be huge and that doesn’t take into account water supplies stressed by the higher temperatures”, said David Battista, a temperatures will cut maize and rice harvests by 20 to 40 percent, the researchers said. The hotter weather will also reduce the moisture in the soil, cutting yields even further. Some three billion people, or half the world’s population currently live in tropical and sub-tropical regions, and their number is set to double by the end of the century. These regions stretch from northern India, southern China to much of Australia area all of Africa, and also extend from the southern United States to northern Argentina and southern Brazil.

The Arctic Circle holds an estimated 90 billion barrels of recoverable oil, enough supply to meet current world demand for almost three years, the US Geological Survey forecast on Wednesday. The government agency also said the area could contain 1,670 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of natural gas. “Before we can make decisions about our future use of oil and gas and related decisions about protecting endangered species, native communities and the health of our planet, we need to know what's out there," said USGS Director Mark Myers. "With this assessment, we're providing the same information to everyone in the world so that the global community can make those difficult decisions," he said. Frank O'Donnell, president of the nonprofit group Clean Air Watch, said not only do polar bears and other wildlife within the Arctic Circle face losing their habitat due to global warming, they would be hurt by companies searching for oil. The 90 billion barrels of oil expected to be in the Arctic could meet current world oil demand of 86.4 million barrels a day for almost three years. The Arctic accounts for about 13 percent of the world's undiscovered oil, 30 percent of the undiscovered natural gas and 20 percent of the undiscovered natural gas liquids, the agency said in the first publicly available petroleum resource estimate of the Arctic Circle.

Part C Directions: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written neatly on the ANSWER SHEET. (10 points) It was only after I started to write a weekly column about the medical journals, and began to read scientific papers from beginning to end, that I realised just how bad much of the medical literature frequently was. I came to recognise various signs of a bad paper: the kind of paper that purports to show that people who eat more than one kilo of broccoli a week were 1.17 times more likely than those who eat less to suffer late in life from pernicious anaemia. (46) There is a great deal of this kind of nonsense in the medical journals which, when taken up by broadcasters and the lay press, generates both health scares and short-lived dietary enthusiasms. Why is so much bad science published? A recent paper, titled “The Natural Selection of Bad Science”, published on the Royal Society’s open science website, attempts to answer this intriguing and important question. It says that the problem is not merely that people do bad science, but that our current system of career advancement positively encourages it. What is important is not truth, but publication, which has become almost an end in itself. There has been a kind of inflationary process at work: (47) nowadays anyone applying for a research post has to have published twice the number of papers that would have been required for the same post only 10 years ago. Never mind the quality, then, count the number. (48) Attempts have been made to curb this tendency, for example, by trying to incorporate some measure of quality as well as quantity int o the assessment of an applicant’s papers. This is the famed citation index, that is to say the number of times a paper has been quoted elsewhere in the scientific literature, the assumption being that an important paper will be cited more often than one of small account. (49) This would be reasonable if it were not for the fact that scientists can easily arrange to cite themselves in their future publications, or get associates to do so for them in return for similar favours. Boiling down an individual’s o utput to simple metrics, such as number of publications or journal impacts, entails considerable savings in time, energy and ambiguity. Unfortunately, the long-term costs of using simple quantitative metrics to assess researcher merit are likely to be quite great. (50) If we are serious about ensuring that our science is both meaningful and reproducible, we must ensure that our institutions encourage that kind of science.

Directions: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written on the ANSWER SHEET(10 points)(2014年考研英语真题Part C) Music means different things to different people and sometimes even different things to the same person at different moments of his life. It might be poetic, philosophical, sensual, or mathematical, but in any case it must, in my view, have something to do with the soul of the human being. Hence it is metaphysical; but the means of expression is purely and exclusively physical: sound. I believe it is precisely this permanent coexistence of metaphysical message through physical means that is the strength of music。(46)It is also the reason why when we try to

In recent years Europeans have become increasingly jumpy about bad food – and with good reason. 2. This year the E.U. banned the importation of non-approved GM corn. 3. It is crucially important that we take stock of this technology’s probable effects on our planet’s ecosystems. 4. We should also take a sober look at the effect of genetic engineering in the social and political realms. 5. Nature is never idle. Through random mutations, nature constantly tests new genetic models of organisms. Exercise 2. A. 1. B. 1. Ready or not, the world is entering the age of genetic engineering. Altered environments and human-created life forms will be part of this new age. Plants may be transformed into miniature factories producing plastics, medicines, or perfumes. Animals may be given human genes to make their tissues compatible with humans, allowing animal hearts and other organs to be transplanted into critically ill people. 2. We should also take a sober look at the effects of genetic engineering in the social and political realms. Because the agricultural and medical benefits of genetic engineering are expensive, poor individuals and poor nations will not be able to afford them – at least not for years to come. As a result, the economic gap between rich and poor is likely to widen. In
