Literature Review

Critics have generally approved that The Great Gatsby, which was published in 1925, is the masterpiece of Fitzgerald’s literary c areer. It evokes not only the atmosphere of the jazz-age searching for the American dream of wealth and happiness, but also the deeper questions of the evaporation of traditional values in a society atmosphere where the people was dominated by increasing materialism and cynicism.

Early reviews of Gatsby were varied, and comparatively few copies actually had sold before the death of Fitzgerald in 1940. Many critics, most particularly Ernest Hemingway, were put off by the fact that Fitzgerald had been recognized as a writer of stories for fashionable magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post. It was not until a renewal of Fitzgerald’s works in the 1950s that the novel began to evoke serious criticism. For the five subsequent decades, Gatsby has continued to draw critical attention and reappraisal. Critics have praised Fitzgerald’s compactly woven narrative, and many have paying attention on the position of the narrator, Nick Caraway, and the subjective limitations of his interpretation of Gatsby’s saga. Altho ugh Gatsby was called “a novel of the Jazz Age” for many years, critics have generally acknowledged that it has a much more widespread meaning, not the least of which is a sharp critique to the society of materialist American much like T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. The appearances of at least four biographies in the 1990s and early 2000s are an suggestion that interest in Fitzgerald’s novels still unabated. Earlier critics of Gatsby emphasized biographical and educational influences on the novel, and formali st approaches dealt with the novel’s composition, point of view, symbols, use of language, and so on. From the 1980s to the 200s, a diversity of approaches, both heavily theoretical and non-theoretical, has been evident in critics’ remarks. While many have continued to explore biographical power or comparisons with other writers, or to use New Critical analyses, other writers have increasingly used such techniques as deconstruction, feminist criticism, and discourse analysis to expose

concealed meanings in the text.

Now people still keep reading the great Gatsby. Many people study it though different perspectives, such as the stylistic perception or structuralism,” By using these narrative techniques Fitzgerald makes the reader has the potential to keep some aesthetic distance from the events and the characters in the story.”

Most of the critical attention has been on the topic ―American Dream. “The American Dream has eventually becomes decayed with gradual overemphasis on the wealth. Fitzgerald intensely detects the trend of corruption in the 1920’s and gives serious reflection on in his novel The Great Gatsby”

“Binary oppositi ons underlie the content of The Great Gatsby, and the pattern of actions structures the narrative of each character. As one picture is seen and appreciated form different perspective, quite different sceneries would be enjoyed. Structuralism opens another window for us.”

Besides the excellent method and style in narrative form and arrangement, its marvelous imaginative merit also lies in Fitzgerald’s original and the symbolism was successfully used by author in the novel to depict his view, particularly of his own times. And this thesis studies the symbolism in The Great Gatsby. Symbolism, as a exclusive artistic method, has two vital meanings according to Webster: one is to clarify imperceptible things by using visible symbols; the other is the links and relationship between symbols and meaning. Therefore symbolism in novel aims to present the concealed things and thoughts under phenomena. The using of symbolism plays a important role in the story. The function of symbolism made this work exceed the narrow individual world, making a connection between subjective and objective. Symbolism exceeds the plot, the description and moral significance of the story. The application of symbolism brings the subject of the novels to a new altitude and contributes to its reputation. It was possible to see the connection between the symbols and themes, what the concealed meaning of the story is.

The Modern Library named it the second best English language novel of the 20th century, this laid the foundation of author in America literature ,the background is the postwar America society,a story about the lower classes Gatsby struggling to realize his dream, but eventually killed by his own “dream” tragedy. Time ,color, figures, are three symbolism theme penetrate in the whole work, most of plot in the novel are belong to the theme, therefore,it is important that have a better understanding about these three theme in order to explore its profound meaning。

Previous Research on The Great Gatsby

Critics have generally approved that The Great Gatsby, which was published in 1925, is the masterpiece of Fitzgerald’s literary career.

It was not until a renewal of Fitzgerald’s works i n the 1950s that the novel began to evoke serious criticism. For the five subsequent decades, Gatsby has continued to draw

critical attention and reappraisal. Critics have praised Fitzgerald’s compactly woven narrative, and many have paying attention on the position of the narrator, Nick Caraway, and the subjective limitations of his interpretation of Gatsby’s saga. Although Gatsby was called “a novel of the Jazz Age” for many years, critics have generally acknowledged that it has a much more widespread meaning, not the least of which is a sharp critique to the society of materialist American much like T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. The appearances of at least four biographies in the 1990s and early 2000s are an suggestion that interest in Fitzgerald’s novels still unabated. Earlier critics of Gatsby emphasized biographical and educational influences on the novel, and formalist approaches dealt with the novel’s composition, point of view, symbols, use of language, and so on. From the 1980s to the 200s, a diversity of approaches, both heavily theoretical and non-theoretical, has been evident in critics’ remarks. While many have continued to explore biographical power or comparisons with other writers, or to use New Critical analyses, other writers have increasingly used such techniques as deconstruction, feminist criticism, and discourse analysis to expose concealed meanings in the text.

Now people still keep reading the great Gatsby. Many people study it though different perspectives, such as the stylistic percep tion or structuralism,” By using these narrative techniques Fitzgerald makes the reader has the potential to keep some aesthetic distance from the events and the characters in the story.”

Most of the critical attention has been on the topic ―American Dream. “The American Dream has eventually becomes decayed with gradual overemphasis on the wealth. Fitzgerald intensely detects the trend of corruption in the 1920’s and gives serious reflectio n on in his novel The Great Gatsby”

“Binary oppositions underlie the content of The Great Gatsby, and the pattern of actions structures the narrative of each character.

Chapter One Symbolism of colors

A Green

People often associated the color green with youth ,spring ,hope, however,in this novel, the color green was shown by the author in a different meaning, the green light on another side of the seashore is the main symbolism in this novel,Gatsby ’s faith is in the green light, it was his future wonderland and the biggest dream in his life. In the evening, Gatsby always stood by himself staring at the green light and open his arm to embrace the green light. The green light is youth and love for Gatsby ,as if the embodiment of Daisy. Although these things are beyond his ability to achieve,Gatsby still put all his effort to pursue his unpractical dream. Gatsby hold parties every weekend in his cottage entertain those visitors with courtesy and warmth in order to catch the attention of Daisy. He wants to flaunt his wealthy and the high social position. He wants to prove that he has all the things Daisy want including wealthy and love, so he can flaunt his wealthy to catch the attention of Daisy. But Gatsby ignores the most important factor that the love established from money and high social status cannot last long , what he got nothing but hypocrisy from Daisy . the “American dream” of Gatsby is going into a wrung direction at the beginnin g of he started, and this mistake leads to Gatsby’s tragic fate. Finally ,he sacrifices his life for Daisy and his unpractical dream. At the end of this novel, nick remember the green light which Gatsby trusted, the light looks like not far to reach, but you cannot get it forever .his aim seems aspirational rather than feasible .his dream has gradually gone. Green usually stands for the warm spring, trust, and activity and young. American dollar bills are also Green. The green light also means expectation in this novel. It is closely associated with Gatsby and his unachievable

dream in the fiction. In our real life, green lamp is the symbol of money and power ,it seems like money and social position can do everything, which is also the hope of American in 20th century. In the fiction, green can be seen in every step in Gatsby’s life. The color green indicates money and power and social position also stands for his hope, trust and belief---all those things put together into one object: Daisy.

The image of green lamp showed in the novel three times correspondingly at the very important points of the plot’s development in this novel, and plays a vital and very function in the course of developing the protagonist Gatsby’s character. The green light stands for the expectation of Gatsby, and the most important object in this novel is also the color green, which stands at the end of the port of the Daisy’s house. Every time when he watches the green lamp, there is a aspiration in his deep heart that he can acquire the love of Daisy we need to discuss what is English learning ,English learning actually is a kind of ability ,not for exam ,is for society ,is for real life ,which is another way of saying we should regard English as a tool to help you express your thought ,you need to use the English ,so you can get a good score ,and listening is the most important part of English learning ,try to imagine how a newly born baby started to learn a language ,listening, right? at first a baby can hear some voice which is meaningless to the baby ,but with the same voice began to accumulate ,and thousands of time practice ,somehow the baby understand the meaning of the voice ,gradually a baby began to know how to use those meaningful voice !so we can get a conclusion that if you want learning English well you need pay great attention on listening ,because this is the most basic part ,and anther thing is accumulate ,that is the secret of English learning!

The light is so weak and can’t be seen easily almost imperceptible the week light just like his unachievable dream can never be powerful enough to exemplify Gatsby, but the light shines every night and every day, just like his dream for Daisy is never quenchable. It is appropriate to compare his action to a certain pilgrim.

At the end of this fiction, Nick thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the edge of Daisy’s port.”2 We can learn a lesson from failure of Gatsby, that is the essence of the American dream.

B White

When nick first met Daisy at Tom’s house, Daisy dressed a white skirt, the light color emitted from Daisy made the whole room warm . the white color definitely belongs to Daisy, just the beautiful, innocent, pour white of Daisy attract Gatsby so much, the image of Daisy dressed in a white s kirt as a girl pressed in Gatsby’s deep heart, which has been the most impressive image in Gatsby’ heart and cannot be forgotten forever and ever, to pursue the image of that innocent beautiful girl became his lifelong dream, a dream in the wonderland, which is another way of saying the dream is a dream can’t be accomplished forever. But Gatsby try his best to pursue his dream, under the arrangement of Nick, Gatsby met Daisy in the house of Gatsby .what impressed Daisy are not the infatuation of Gatsby , in contrast, the luxury house and the wealthy and the luxury lifestyle of Gatsby was impress Daisy most , Daisy are not the girl dressed white skirt with innocent mind ,the background of her age has transformed her completely into another person. Daisy has became a person with greedy selfish and indifference under the effect of the material life in eastern. No matter how much wealthy does Gatsby possess still cannot fulfill the greedy desire of Daisy. To understand this idea from side, the white color also means that the ignorant shallow and sluggish thought of Daisy, that is the nature of Daisy. The American dream of Gatsby never can be integrity and satisfactory, for the love of Daisy, Gatsby earn money desperately, he got so much wealthy and money ,but the money and wealthy can never fulfill his lonely thought. To pursue the innocent and beautiful

Daisy became the spiritual brace of Gatsby to continue his life, however, Gatsby was struck by the ruthless reality again, and this make the broken of American dream.

C Red

The white and red are the basic color of the house of Tom and Daisy. Since the white stand for the innocent and beauty of Daisy, and the red color perfectly show the selfish, and brutal characteristic of Tom, superior family background made Tom proud and arrogant ,Fitzgerald wrote this in the novel this way:He always brutally push retaining everyone in front of him,A red rash bull image was described vividly in novel,Although he and Daisy married, but often date with others,Even after he was aware of the affair rof his wife and Gatsby, he even took his wife to the front of Gatsby ,to prove that Gatsby cannot hurt him . finally ,he knows that his wife drove car and kill his lover accidentally ,for the sake of be jealous of Gatsby ,and Tom told his l over’s husband that his wife was killed by Gatsby, so leads to the death of Gatsby, in essence, Tom are the men with blood on his two hands ,the color red is the color of Tom.

D Yellow

Among those symbolic color ,yellow is also play an important role In the novel, a symbol of the money, power, riches and wealthy in the novel always associated with death, the color of the car Daisy drove is yellow, and Daisy drove the car kill Tom’s lover, after Gatsby was killed by Wilson the moment he drop into water Fitzgerald described him as a yellow leaf fell into the jungle, Perhaps through this link, the author wants to tell the readers sometimes money is the source of evil leading us to the death..

The two girls in the party wear “twin yellow dresses”, Doctor T. J. Eckleburg’s spectacles are yellow, the orchestra in the party plays “yellow cocktail music”, Jordon’s arm is gold, and Gatsby’s car is yellow……it seems that money is all for this society and the society is full of yellow, which is another way of saying full of gold and money.

..

E Blue.

The color Blue stand for tranquillest, resentment, and delusion, Fitzgerald regard the color blue as the mark of dream. In the fiction, when Gatsby was a teenager, he is honesty and Loyalty man. The captain trusted him completely, and gives him a blue color naval uniform. In the book, the huge eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg“stared at the solemn dumping ground is the color blue”. This symbolizes the unlucky and stands for the disaster. The skirt Myrtle Wilson is dressed is the blue color. The color of Gatsby’s garden and the lawn is blue; driver’s dressed in a cloth of robin’s-egg blue, etc..”4

White Lie Everyone learning English knows what awhite lie means, but since it is a lie, it has always been a controversialtopic. A case in point is when a patient is suffering an incurable illness, should the doctor or the other people inform the patient of the truth? People who against this insist that the patients should be informed thetrue information about their illness, so that they can make proper decisionaccording to their health. And the laws entitle people to know the truth whichconcerns themselves, so telling them a lie in fact invades their legal right. Contrary to the above belief, some people hold that a white lie is tacceptable. They worry about that if the patient was told the true about theircondition, it will risks destroying their

Pursuit for dreams —after reading The Great Gatsby I have heard of the famous novel The Great Gatsby for many years. However, until recently have I got the time and mood to read it. As soon as I finish reading, I find my previous unwarranted assumption of it totally wrong. This is a story about Gatsby and his pursuit for the ‘American dreams'. During the World War One, the poor soldier Gatsby fell in love with an upper class girl named Daisy. But due to the wide gap between them, Daisy decided to marry Tom, a man of her class, instead of Gatsby. Broken-hearted Gatsby then held the conviction that money was of the greatest importance. He strongly believed in the ‘American dreams', which as we all know, advocates that one can achieve whatever he or she likes through continuous efforts. He strived for five years to become a millionaire and bought a villa near Daisy's to attract her. He was too addicted to his fantasy to realize that Daisy was no longer the lovely girl she used to be. Eventually, he was killed because of her crime. After reading it, something reverberates in my heart. I

Abstract: The scholars have already done some researches on the book The Great Gatsby which was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, such as the writing styles of the author in the book, symbolism and metaphor, the failure of the “American dream”, the analysis of the protagonist —Gatsb y—the representative of hero and Daisy’s and other women’s selfish and mental emptiness. On the basis of these, it revealed the failure of the “American Dream”people had in that times when they paid more attention to the materialistic hedonism but spiritual void by analyzing the characters such as Gatsby, Daisy and Tom. Therefore, Gatsby’s “American Dream”—Daisy—was doomed to failure. However, he was great because he speared no efforts to make his dream come true. Key Word: greatness Gatsby meanness of the foils American Dream

Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic. Some people maintain that doctors should tell white lies to their patients when asked about their diseases. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the opinion?Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. With more attention attached to humanism, doctors are required of humanistic care as well as eminent medical skills. In this case, some people assert that white lies are inevitable for doctors when patients consult them for diseases. In my opinion, however, honesty is the basic moral bottom line for doctors and communication skills rather than white lies manifest humanism and love. S ome people think white lies attend to patients’ anxiety, depression and sensitivity about their diseases, but this argument does not hold water. No one goes to hospital if he or she feels vigorous and happy. That is to say, patients possess their own thoughts and mental participation before, so usually they turn to doctors just for confirmed diagnoses. Thus, people may underestimate their diseases if given white lies. Prescription they do not follow; medicine they do not take. Ultimately, they blame doctors for their white lies. What’s more, it is essential that medical staff guarantee transparent disclosure to patients, or they may feel offended after busting

The Great Gatsby F.Scott.Fitzgerald . Character List Daisy Buchanan - Nick’s cousin, and the woman Gatsby loves. As a young woman in Louisville before the war, Daisy was courted by a number of officers, including Gatsby. She fell in love with Gatsby and promised to wait for him. However, Daisy harbors a deep need to be loved, and when a wealthy, powerful young man named Tom Buchanan asked her to marry him, Daisy decided not to wait for Gatsby after all. Now a beautiful socialite, Daisy lives with Tom across from Gatsby in the fashionable East Egg district of Long Island. She is sardonic and somewhat cynical, and behaves superficially to mask her pain at her husband’s constant infidelity. Daisy Buchanan (In-Depth Analysis) Tom Buchanan - Daisy’s immensely wealthy husband, once a member of Nick’s social club at Yale. Powerfully built and hailing from a socially solid old family, Tom is an arrogant, hypocritical bully. His social attitudes are laced with racism and sexism, and he never even considers trying to live up to the moral standard he demands from those around him. He has no moral qualms about his own extramarital affair with Myrtle, but when he begins to suspect Daisy and Gatsby of having an affair, he becomes outraged and forces a confrontation. Jordan Baker - Daisy’s friend, a woman with whom Nick becomes romantically involved during the course of the novel. A competitive golfer, Jordan represents one of the “new women” of the 1920s—cynical, boyish, and self-centered. Jordan is beautiful, but also dishonest: she cheated in order to win her first golf tournament and continually bends the truth. Myrtle Wilson - Tom’s lover, whose lifeless husband George owns a run-down garage in the valley of ashes. Myrtle herself possesses a fierce vitality and desperately looks for a way to improve her situation. Unfortunately for her, she chooses Tom, who treats her as a mere object of his desire. Analysis of Major Characters Daisy Buchanan Partially based on Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda, Daisy is a beautiful young woman from Louisville, Kentucky. She is Nick’s cousin and the object of Gatsby’s love. As a young debutante in Louisville, Daisy was extremely popular among the military officers stationed near her home, including Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lied about his background to Daisy, claiming to be from a wealthy family in order to convince her that he was worthy of her. Eventually, Gatsby won Daisy’s heart, and they made love before Gatsby left to fight in the war. Daisy promised to wait for Gatsby, but in 1919 she chose instead to marry Tom Buchanan, a young man from a solid, aristocratic family who could promise her a wealthy lifestyle and who had the support of her parents. After 1919, Gatsby dedicated himself to winning Daisy back, making her the single goal of all of his dreams and the main motivation behind his acquisition of immense wealth through criminal activity. To Gatsby, Daisy represents the paragon of perfection—she has the aura of charm, wealth, sophistication, grace, and aristocracy that he longed for as a child in North Dakota and that first attracted him to her. In reality, however, Daisy falls far short of Gatsby’s ideals. She is beautiful and charming, but also fickle, shallow, bored, and sardonic. Nick characterizes her as a careless person who smashes things up and then retreats behind her money. Daisy proves her real nature when she chooses Tom over Gatsby in Chapter VII, then allows Gatsby to take the blame for killing Myrtle Wilson even though she herself was driving

He was a spokesman for the so-called Jazz Age, setting a personal as well as literary example for a generation whose first commandment was: Do what you will. He fell from favor as a writer when the indulgent decade of his triumph went down under the impact of a worldwide Depression in the 1930s. The Great Gatsby is regarded as his masterpiece. The theory of the exquisite design of color in “The great Gatsby” Abstract “The great Gatsby” is regarded as the masterpiece of the famous Fitzgerald, which is regarded as “one of the greatest novels in the 20th century”. When you are reading the “The great Gatsby”, do you have noticed a disti nction of it ,the utilization of various colors, and every color in the novel has its own profound meaning. In this paper,we will appreciate four colors of “The great Gatsby” together. Key words:The great Gatsby Fitzgerald Color Metaphor “The great Gatsby” is regarded as the masterpiece of the famous Fitzgerald, which is regarded as “one of the greatest novels in the 20th century”,and it is also the most favorite novel of Haruki Murakami ,the famous contemporary Japanese novelist. Its fancinnating plots, picturesque descriptions and profound expose, which all embody Fitzgerald’s transcendental talent, can not content the whole execellence of this great novel——the novel’s splendidness is much more than that. When you are reading the “The great Gatsby”, I do n’t know whether you have noticed a distinction of it ,the utilization of various colors, and the interleaving of colors reveals the leitmotiv of the novel, that the huge gap of the ideal and reality would break the vacuous American dream. In this paper, w e will analyze “The great Gatsby” from the point of view of colors and choose 4 commonly used colors of the it, which include green, white, yellow and blue, to understand the role of colors in this novel. Green Green is the color of the vegetation in the natural, which can remind people of the growth of the grass and trees, and it has the meaning of health, energy, hope and https://www.wendangku.net/doc/fa2906803.html,ter , the growth of the vegetation is used to describe the growth of people themselves, and green started to be describe the specially youthful spirit of the youngest, however at the same time ,green also has the metaphor meaning of immatureness, naivete, and inexperience. In the novel, the main incarnate of green is the green light ,which is as a symple of the pursuit of Gatsby, and green is dominant tone of Gatsby’s whole life, which implies the immature procession of the protagonist of setting the goal, pursiting the dream and his dream’s disillusionment . The first apparence of green is in Gatsby’s seventeen years old, and at tha t time

The Great Gatsby:Yale,Princeton, Columbia,Harvard,Oxford Ray C.Fair? November2000 Abstract Where did Fitzgerald get the idea of having Clay’s Economics reside in Nick Carraway’s library? F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is one of the classics of American lit-erature.I,like many,?rst read it in high school.A recent re-read,however,with the mature eyes of an economist, led me to the following passage, which I had somehow overlooked in my earlier days. While Jay Gatsby nervously awaited the arrival of Daisy in Nick Carraway’s house,he looked with vacant eyes through a copy of Clay’s Economics (Fitzgerald(1925,p.89)).Clay’s Economics is an introductory economics text, written by the British economist Henry Clay, and this bit of free advertising piqued ?Cowles Foundation and International Center for Finance,Yale University,New Haven,CT 06520-8281.V oice:203-432-3715;Fax:203-432-6167;e-mail:ray.fair@https://www.wendangku.net/doc/fa2906803.html,;website: https://www.wendangku.net/doc/fa2906803.html,.I would like to thank Sharon Oster for many helpful comments, Jennifer Nou and Emily Oster for superb research assistance,Billy Hitchcock for permission to examine his father’s record at Harvard, and many helpful librarians at the colleges listed in the paper’s title. It was Jennifer Nou’s idea to pursue the Tommy Hitchcock link, which alas led to no smoking gun.
