第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,32分)

第一节(每小题2分,共11小题,满分22分)

A

Imagine that you live in a world of darkness, which would make going anywhere a challenge. Some who live in this world have a person to be with them wherever they go. Some use a white cane, which is a signal that they are blind. Others choose to use a guide dog, which is where the Huikuang Guide Dog School Taiwan enters the picture. This organization began to breed, raise and train guide dogs for blind people in Taiwan starting in 1991.

In addition to breeding puppies, the school’s intensive program includes training these puppies to become guide dogs. Besides being trainable, guide dogs must have a suitable personality. Choosing the right breeds is an important part of the process. A golden retriever and Labrador mix represents the highest percentage of guide dogs. This is because of the ability to combine the best features of both breeds. The result is a dog that is calm in nature, willing to work and with a fabulous personality. These features best suit the majority of guide dog owners.

All breeds must be hardworking, used to people and animals and not afraid of noise or crowds. This is especially true for those in busy modern city environments. Additionally, these guide dogs must never be allowed to eat human food. If they do, they may become easily distracted by different food smells and put their owners in danger.

56. What has the Huikuang Guide Dog School Taiwan done for blind people?

A. Helped them come out of a world of darkness.

B. Helped them find a person to guide them.

C. Helped them become more independent.

D. Helped them signal that they are blind.

57. What qualities do people look for in guide dogs?

A. Fun-loving and hardworking.

B. Hardworking and peaceful.

C. Noisy and playful.

D. Fearful and people-loving.

58. Why are guide dogs only allowed to eat dog food?

A. So they don’t expose their owners to threats.

B. So they can guide more easily.

C. So they don’t eat a bad mix of food.

D. So they don’t lose their best feature.

B

There once lived a wise old King who surrounded himself with wise elders to advise him. However, the King’s son didn’t like seeing the old people around. “They don’t like to try new things,” he said. But really he was bothered that the old people reminded him that his father was aging.

The King became ill and died, and the young prince became King. When he was crowned, he surrounded himself with youth. Everyone was forced to send their aged parents far away. But one young advisor hid his father.

Then a messenger from a nearby kingdom arrived. He said, “My master wants to know which end of this stick comes from the higher part of the tree. Answer incorrectly and he will conquer you and make you all slaves! You have seven days.”

The king said to his advisors, “Bring me the answer so we can avoid war!” But they hadn’t tended the soil or worked in the forests, so they had no answer.

Six days passed. The advisor who had hid his father told his father the riddle.

“Do as I say, and our kingdom will remain at peace,” his father replied.

The next morning, the advisor told the King, “Order a bowl of water.” When it arrived, the advisor put the stick into the water. One end sank while the other end stuck up.

“The end that is higher grew higher on the tree.” The messenger smiled and departed to tell his master and avoid a war.

“How did you know the answer?” asked the King.

“I hid my father and asked him. His wisdom saved our kingdom,” the advisor responded.

“I was wrong,” said the young King. “I see the value of being old and wise.”

All the elders were brought back and honored by everyone.

59. Why did the old King have older people as advisors?

A. Because he liked the elderly.

B. Because he didn’t like young people.

C. Because they had a lot of knowledge.

D. Because young people know a lot.

60. Why did the young King change advisors?

A. Because he thought old people weren't smart.

C. Because he felt younger people were wiser.

D. Because he wanted to feel younger than he was.

Open Letter to an Editor

I had an interesting conversation with a reporter recently---one who works for you. In fact, he’s one of your best reporters. He wants to leave.

Your reporter gave me a copy of his resume(简历)and photocopies of six stories that he wrote for you. The headlines showed you played them proudly. With great enthusiasm, he talked about how he finds issues, approaches them, and writes about them, which tells me he is one of your best. I’m sure you would hate to lose him.

Surprisingly, your reporter is not unhappy. In fact, he told me he really likes his job. He has a great assignment(分工), and said you run a great paper. It would be easy for you to keep him, he said. He knows that the paper values him. He appreciates the responsibility you’ve given him, takes ownership of his profession, and enjoys his freedom.

So why is he looking for a way out?

He talked to me because he wants his editors to demand so much more of him. He wants to be pushed, challenged, coached to new heights.

The reporter believes that good stories spring from good questions, but his editors usually ask how long the story will be, when it will be in, where it can play, and what the budget is.

He longs for conversations with an editor who will help him turn his good ideas into great ones. He wants someone to get excited about what he’s doing and to help him turn his story idea upside down and inside out, exploring the best ways to report it. He wants to be more valuable for your paper. That’s what you want for him, too, isn’t it?

So your reporter has set me thinking.

Our best hope in keeping our best reporters, copy editors, photographers, artists—everyone—is to work harder to make sure they get the help they are demanding to reach the ir potential. If we can’t do it, they’ll find someone who can.

However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured.” Wellman said. Until one day, Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.

Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.

第八部分阅读理解(百强校英语解析团队专供)(每题2分,共5小题,满分10分)In the early 20th century, few things were more appealing than the promise of scientific knowledge. In a world struggling with rapid industrialization, science and technology seemed to offer solutions to almost every problem. Newly created state colleges and universities devoted themselves almost entirely to scientific, technological, and engineering fields. Many Americans came to believe that scientific certainty could not only solve scientific problems, but also reform politics, government, and business. Two world wars and a Great Depression rocked the confidence of many people that scientific expertise alone could create a prosperous and ordered world. After World War II, the academic world turned with new enthusiasm to humanistic studies, which seemed to many scholars the best way to ensure the survival of democracy. American scholars fanned out across much of the world—with support from the Ford Foundation, the Fulbright program, etc.—to promote the teaching of literature and the arts in an effort to make the case for democratic freedoms.

In the America of our own time, the great educational challenge has become an effort to strengthen the teaching of what is now known as the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math). There is considerable and justified concern that the United States is falling behind much of the rest of the developed world in these essential disciplines. India, China, Japan, and other regions seem to be seizing technological leadership.

At the same time, perhaps inevitably, the humanities—while still popular in elite colleges and universities—have experienced a significant decline. Humanistic disciplines are seriously underfunded, not just by the government and the foundations

but by academic institutions themselves. Humanists are usually among the lowest-paid faculty members at most institutions and are often lightly regarded because they do not generate grant income and because they provide no obvious credentials(资质)for most nonacademic careers.

Undoubtedly American education should train more scientists and engineers. Much of the concern among politicians about the state of American universities today is focused on the absence of “real world” education—which means preparation for professional and scientific careers. But the idea that institutions or their students must decide between humanities and science is false. Our society could not survive without scientific and technological knowledge. But we would be equally impoverished (贫困的)without humanistic knowledge as well. Science and technology teach us what we can do. Humanistic thinking helps us understand what we should do.

It is almost impossible to imagine our society without thinking of the extraordinary achievements of scientists and engineers in building our complicated world. But try to imagine our world as well without the remarkable works that have defined our culture and values. We have always needed, and we still need, both.

95. In the early 20th century Americans believed science and technology could ________.

A. help raise people’s living standards

B. quicken the pace of industrialization

C. solve virtually all existing problems

D. promote the nation’s social progress

96. Why did many American scholars become enthusiastic about humanistic studies after World War II?

A. They believed the stability of a society depended heavily on humanistic studies.

B. They wanted to improve their own status within the current education system.

C. They could get financial support from various foundations for humanistic studies.

D. They realized science and technology alone were no guarantee for a better world.

97. Why are American scholars worried about education today?

A. The STEM subjects are too challenging for students to learn.

B. Some Asian countries have overtaken America in basic sciences.

C. America is lagging behind in the STEM disciplines.

D. There are not enough scholars in humanistic studies.

98. What accounts for the significant decline in humanistic studies today?

A. Shrinking enrollment.

B. Insufficient funding.

C. Shortage of devoted faculty.

D. Dim prospects for graduates.

99. Why does the author attach so much importance to humanistic studies?

A. Humanistic thinking helps cultivate students’ creativity.

B. They help prepare students for their professional careers.

C. Humanistic thinking helps define our culture and values.

D. They promote the development of science and technology.
