In the town of Lampang in northern Thailand, there is an unusual group of musicians. They play many different k___81____ of music—everything from traditional Thai songs to music by Beethoven. Both children and adults love this group. What makes them so p 82 ? Is it their music? Their looks? Yes, it's both of the things, but it’s a 83 something else: they're elephants.

These musical elephants started at the TECC(泰国大象保护中心)in Lampang. The TECC protects elephants. It teaches people to understand and love them. And, like many zoos a 84 the world, the TECC encourages elephants to paint.

Richard Lair w 85 for the TECC. He loves his job there and knows a lot about elephants. He says some of the animals' paintings are very good. But, in fact, elephants h 86 better than they see. And so he had an idea: if elephants are s 87 and they have good hearing, maybe they can play music. To test his idea, Lair and a friend started the Thai Elephant Orchestra. During a performance(表演), the elephants play a number of i 88 , including the drums and the xylophone(木琴).

But can elephants really make music properly? Yes, says Lair. They are very creative.

Human e 89 the animals to play, but the elephants make their own songs; they don't just copy their trainers o 90 other people. There are now CDs of the group’s music which make money for the TECC. And the music these artists create is pretty amazing.

On July2, 1937, Amelia Earhart( an American pilot) and Fred Noonan left New Guinea for Howland Island in the Pacific. This was the longest and most dangerous part of their t 81 around the world. Earhart had trouble soon after the plane took off. The weather was very bad, so she had to

f 82 at 3,000 metres. Goin

g this high, the plane used fuel quickly.

After about 20 h 83 , Earhart and Noonan got close to Howland Island. The island was o 84 about 65 miles (英里) away, but the bright sun was shining in their faces so they couldn’t see it. Near Howland, a ship was w 85 for the plane. Earhart contacted the ship: “We don’t have enough fuel,” she said. The ship tried to stay in touch with her b 86 got no answer. Finally, the ship called for help. People looked for Earhart and Noonan for days. However, they found nothing.

What happened to Amelia Earhart? No one knows for sure. D 87 the flight, she probably moved in the wrong direction(方向) because the sun was bright and it was d 88 to see. So she got lost; soon after, her plane ran out of fuel, and she died at sea. Another idea is that she survived(幸存) the plane

crash(飞机失事), s 89 to a lonely island, and later died there. Still other think she survived the crash and secretly returned to the U.S. with a new identity(身份).

Till now, none of these i 90 has been proved. People are still wondering about them. (Noonan’s body has neve r been found either.) No matter what happened, Earhart probably died as she wished. “When I go,” she said, “I’d like best to go in my plane.”
