In 1943,when I was 4,my parents moved from Coeur d’Alene ,Idaho ,to Fairba nks,Alaska, where adventure was never very far away.

We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun.All that sunlight was fantastic for Mum’s vegetable garden.Working in the garden at Midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn’t c are much about my bedtime.

Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mum was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire going in the dirty basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel(桶) of a paint but couldn’t really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home.

Mum and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did! I had a tour of the prison before Mum rescued me. I hadn’t turned 5 yet.

As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail at school?

As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dog sledder(驾雪橇者), I think I knew him well because I was taken for a superstar he was, but I do remember the ride well. I was wrapped heavily and well sheltered from the freezing and blowing weather.

In 1950, we moved back to Coeur d’Alene, but we got one more Alaskan adventure when Leonhard invited us eight years later by paying a visit to Idaho to attend a gathering of former neighbours of Alaska.

Transparent(透明的)animals let light pass through their bodies the same way light passes through a window. These animals typically live between the surface of the ocean and a depth of about 3,300 feet -as most light can reach. Most of them are extremely delicate and can be damaged by a simple touch. Sonke Johnsen, a scientist in biology says, “These animals live through their life alone. They never touch anything unless they’re eating it, or unless something is eating them.”

And they are as clear as glass. How does an animals become see-through? It’s trickier than you might think.

The objects around you are visible because they interact with light. Light typically travels in a straight line. But some materials slow and scatter(散射)light, bouncing it away from its original path. Others absorb light, stopping it dead in its tracks. Both scattering and absorption make an object look different from other objects around it, so you can see it easily.

But a transparent object doesn’t absorb or scatter light, at least not very much, Light can pass through it without bending or stopping. That means a transparent object doesn’t look very different from the surrounding air or water. You don’t see it---you see the things behind it.

To become transparent, an animals needs to keep its body from absorbing or scattering light. Living materials can stop light because they contain pigments(色素)that absorb specific colors of light. But a transparent animal doesn’t have pigments, so its tissues won’t absorb light. According to Johnsen, avoiding absorption is actually easy. The real challenge is preventing light from scattering.

Larger transparent animals have the biggest challenge, because they have to make all the different tissues in their bodies slow down light exactly as much as water does, They need to look uniform. But how they’re doing it is still unknown. One thing is clear for these larger animals, staying transparent is an active process. When they die, they turn a non-transparent milky white.

29.According to Paragraph 1, transparent animals_______.

A. stay in groups

B. can be easily damaged

B. appear only in deep ocean D. are beautiful creatures

30.The underlined word “dead” in Paragraph 3 means______.

A. Silently

B. gradually

C. regularly

31.One way for an animals to became transparent is to_______.

A. change the direction of light travel

B. gather materials to scatter light

C. avoid the absorption of light

D. grow bigger to stop light

32.The last paragraph tells us that larger transparent animals_______.

A. move more slowly in deep water

B. stay see -through even after death

C. produce more tissues for their survival

D. take effective action to reduce light spreading

D

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved(毫不掩饰的). In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party. In adulthood, the things that bring deep joy-love, marriage, birth-also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated.

My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box

and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’re so self-conscious about our “right”to it that it’s making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier.

Happiness isn’t about what happens to us-it’s about how we see what happens to us. It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess.

33.As people grow older,they .

A.feel it harder to experience happiness

B.associate their happiness less with others

C.will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness

D.tend to believe responsibility means happiness

34.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 3 and 4?

A.She cares little.about her own health.

B.She enjoys the freedom of traveling.

C.She is easily pleased by things in daily life.

D.She prefers getting pleasure from housework.

35.What can be concluded from this passage?

A.Happy is he who is content.

B.Each man is the master of his own fate.

C.Success leads to happiness.

D.Happiness lies between the positive and the negative.

But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite o f their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat. So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self –confidence and energy, extends life and above all improve my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out. 1.Why is there a smile on the author’s face in the morning? A. Because she sees her family sleeping peacefully. B. Because she finishes her favorite exercise C. Because she enjoys the interesting DVD D. Because she feels a sense of achievement 2. What does the underlined word “commitment” in the last paragraph mean? A. Good health B. Firm belief C.A strong power D.A regular habit 3. What can we learn about the author from the text? A. She acts in a strange way B. She wants to look different from others C. She aims to develop a good body shape

Here are the garden products to avoid: Cocoa mulch Some gardeners like to use cocoa shell mulch in their gardens but, just like chocolate, cocoa shell mulch contains theobromine (可可碱), which is poisonous to dogs. This means that cocoa shell mulch can be potentially deadly if consumed in large quantities. If you own a dog I’d strongly advise that you avoid using Cocoa mulch in your garden. Compost Despite being an eco-friendly garden feature, compost can be highly dangerous for animal. As organic matter decomposes, it releases mycotoxins (霉菌素), which are poisonous to wildlife. Consumption of mycotoxins can cause panting, vomiting (呕吐), seizures and even death in dogs. If you do use compost in your garden, make sure it is securely fenced off so that your pet cannot access it. Weed killer The chemicals contained in weed killers can be irritants to animals and, in some cases, even poisonous. Some weed killers contain harmful substances, such as borax and arsenic, which can potentially be fatal to pets. If you are unsure whether a weed killer is safe to use in a garden that your pet uses, you should always seek the manufacturer’s advice first, or ask a vet (兽医).
