A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket(彩票)at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked up the ticket, then claimed the £25000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash. The theft happened when maths professor V inicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tyre on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped to ―help‖, stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.

Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire(里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he decided he could not keep the money despite having been stolen. He advertised in newspapers and on radio, saying: "I'm trying to find the man who stole my suitcase. I have 60 million for him--- a lottery win. Please meet me. Anonymity(匿名) guaranteed."

Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the cash. But there was one voice he recognized--- and he arranged to meet the man in a park. The thief, a 35-year-old unemployed father of two, gave back the suitcase and burst into tears. He could not believe what was happening. "Why didn't you keep the money?" he asked. Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the residents of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the residents become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the c ountry’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country, keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the wealth and happiness of local inhabitants(居民).

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first- class roads, and other support facilities(配套设施)needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, inc luding roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists , jobs and money are lost. 60.Which of the following do you think has been discussed in the part before this selection?

63.The author thinks it is good for local people to know that tourism will ________ .

A. waste a lot of money

It’s enough to give anyone an earache. Women spend an average of about five years on the phone during their working lives, research has showed. Y ou won’t be surprised to learn women spend 18 months longer than men on the phone--- who only chat for an average of three years.

Both sexes make and receive almost the same number of calls, 277,000 for men and 288,000 for women. But women spend 13,500 more hours in total on their conversations. More than half of those chats are work-related but people spend on average twice as ling on a personal call(10 minutes) as on a business one.

Despite the explosion in mobile phone ownership, most people still prefer to use landlines, the poll(民意调查) found. However, when people are tired of talking, the top excuse for getting a caller off the line is to say “Someone’s at the door.”Other excuses include “I’m cooking.”and “I need to go to the toilet.”

Eight out of ten phone users admitted not answering their phones on purpose if they did not want to speaker to the caller. One in three people thought calls after 10 pm were unacceptable but a quarter of those polled said they did not mind calls up to midnight. Two-thirds admitted they had people in their address books who they knew they should ring but never got round to doing so.

Joseph Blass, managing director of telecom company Toucan, said, “As a nation, we love to chat on the phone but it is quite astonishing when we look at the total number of calls we make in a lifetime.”

B. people in many countries love to chat on the phone

C. people insist on often phoning their family and friends

D. the amount of time people spend on the phone was unexpected

When a 20-pound turkey emerged from the kitchen at a weekend dress rehearsal(排演)for Thanksgiving dinner, about two dozen Chinese immigrants pulled out their digital cameras and took pictures.

―Wah!‖ exclaimed several.

―It’s cooked so well,‖ said Wilson Goh. ―Under the light, it’s very pretty.‖

Sponsored(赞助)by the Chinese American Etiquette(礼节) Association, the event addressed the typical American holiday’s traditions, which often baffle new immigrants.

―The great thing is that immigrants come and adopt these holidays and traditions and also change them,‖ said Noah Pickus , a professor of ethics and public policy at Duke Un iversity who studies American identity. ―That is part of how they become American, and it gives new energy to us.‖

Jane Leu, director of Upwardly Global, a San Francisco organization that helps immigrant professionals rebuild their careers, sees special relevance(关联) for immigrants in Thanksgiving.

―Most don’t know that it is actually a celebration of getting through the first year in America and living to tell the tale.‖ Leu said. ―My sense is that you have to be in the U.S. for a long time before you feel that getting up at 7 a.m. on a day off to put in the turkey and bake up some pies has any meaning.‖ Many immigrants do adopt the holiday after they arrive in the United States, but in their own ways. Cherie M. Querol Moreno, 52, of Daly City, will serve lumpia (spring rolls) and coconut and pineapple fruit salad this Thanksgiving to honor her native Philippines. And she’ll serve succotash and corn to represent the contributions of Native Americans. Moreno says she used to serve turkey, but there’s al ways too much. She will instead serve chicken this year.

―The spirit of the holiday lives in each wave of settlers that arrives and enriches this country with their culture and traditions,‖ said Moreno, who immigrated in 1980. ―I didn’t want to imitat e the first Thanksgiving; I wanted to make the occasion meaningful to us.‖

68. The Chinese American Etiquette Association is most probably an organization which______.

A. helps new immigrants from China to get to know about American culture and customs

B. just teaches new immigrants from China to get to know about the holiday

——Thanksgiving

C. helps Chinese immigrant professionals rebuild their careers

D. studies American identity.

69. From the passage, we can infer that______.

A. the two dozen Chinese immigrants took pictures excitedly

B. people usually get up late on a day off

C. immigrants don’t like to adopt American holidays and traditions

D. for many immigrants, Thanksgiving is actually a celebration of getting through the first year

in America

70. The underlined word ―baffle‖ can be best replaced by ________.

A. surprise

B. satisfy

C. frighten

D. puzzle

71. From the text, we know that Moreno is among those immigrants who ________.

A. don’t like t serve tur key at Thanksgiving dinner

B. are celebrating Thanksgiving to get through the first year in America

C. adopt American holidays and traditions and also change them

D. want to honor only their native Philippines by serving their favorite food

E

Doodles are signs which you draw unconsciously when you are holding a pen in your hand and just happen to start writing aimlessly. However, there is more to these “diagrams( 图形) of the unconscious‖ than what you see. Free from the restriction(limitation) of the conscious mind, they can be useful in finding your character and personality, and many of your secret hopes, ambitions, fears, and dreams.

Faces are a sign of sociability or lack of it. If you doodle happy, smiling faces, you have a friendly, out -going disposition(character) which people respond to, and you enjoy an active social life. If your faces are bad, this may mean hating others. Faces looking to the right are a sign of out-going personality and confident expectation about the future, to the left, a sign of shyness and self-control.

Bare or narrow trees show a lack of warmth. Y ou’ve probably been disappointed in life or could even be suffering from a minor illness that needs attention.

If you build a house in layers( 层) , each layer separate, you could be too proud, too eager to make your loved ones follow your order and jump to attention. A little untidiness in a house makes the people feel comfortable, safe and happy.

If your doodle looks like a web, you are making a cry for help in solving a problem, you feel trapped, and are seeking a way out; perhaps you even want to travel, try out new ideas and realize

your ambitions. But you lack confidence to step out into the world on your own because of the web you’ve created around you.

72.One can probably have the wish to be _____if he doodles a building with unconnected storeys.

A. a leader

B. a self-controlled person

C. a shy person

D. an attentive person

73.If you doodle a face, you may do any of the following EXCEPT_______.

A. lead an active life

B. lead an inactive life

C. want to get on well with others

D. be in charge of others

74.What does the underlined word ―doodle‖ mean in Paragraph 2?

A. to draw without realizing what one is drawing

B. to draw carefully and attentively what one likes drawing

C. to write different things without certain limits

D. to write at home, mainly on the wall

75.What is the possible best title of the passage?

A. Don’t doodle,or you’ll not be able to keep secret.

B. Recognize yourself with the help of doodles.

C. Doodling, an unpopular habit.

D. Doodling may cause untidiness.

Dear Editor,

I'm writing to you about the construction project which is taking place in our city. Recently the local government has decided to broaden some narrow roads and build subway, which has aroused a heated discussion.

Some agree that we should carry out this construction project because it can solve some traffic problems and make our life convenient and comfortable; besides, it helps promote the economy and improve people's living environment as well as the image of Nanchang as a modern tourist city. But others believe that the construction work may cause air pollution.

And traffic jams appear now and then. Even worse, the noise produced by the work will disturb people's peaceful life.

Personally, the subway in the street may somewhat damage the appearance of our city, however, I think the construction project will certainly do a lot of good to the city and bring convenience to the residence in the future.

Yours truly,

Chen ming

A Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth Introduction Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.

Edwarda O’Bara was a 17-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes(糖尿病)medication and slipped into a diabetic coma. Just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never d id. Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter—reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin(胰岛素)and given nourishment through a feeding tube—until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over. Her family’s unending care for her became a story told across the world. And visitors from across the world traveled to the Miami Gardens home every year, sometimes appearing at the doorstep on random days, other times for Edwarda’s yearly birthday party, a cheerful affair with decorations, balloons and cake. Through it all, Edwarda remained in a coma. But to her family and followers she remained alive. Colleen O’Bara described her as “the best sister in the whole wide world.” “She taught me so much, especially after she was in the coma, ” Colleen O’Bara said, “She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. She taught me about patience that I didn’t have before. I learned so much from taking care of my sister. It’s like I grew up overnight. ” In an announcement of Edwarda’s death posted Thursday on a website, Colleen O’Bara wrote: “Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly a t me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen.
