III. There are two passages in this section.Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements,Please decide on the best choice from A,B,C,D.

(A) The elect were,for the most part,boys who had been brought up to do their duty.They memorized whatever they are teachers told them to learn.Whether they wanted to know it,whether they understood it or not,they could remember and recite it.Their own driving motives were,so far as i could make out,not curiosity;they rarely talked about our studies,and if I spoke of the implications of something we had read or heard,they looked dazed or indifferent.Their own motives were foreign to me;to beat the other follows,stand high,represent the honor of the school.

My parents did not bring me up.They sent me to school,they gave me teachers of music,drawing ;they offer me every opportunity in their reach.But also they gave me

liberty and the tools of quite another life;horses,guns,dogs,and the range of an open country.As I have shown,the people,the businesses,and the dreams of this life interested me,and I learned well whatever interested me.School subjects which happened to bear on my outside interests I studied in school and out;I read more than was required,and I read for keeps,too.I know these subjects to this day,just as I remember and love still the men and women,the boys and girls,who let me be friends with them then and so revealed to me some of the depths and the limitations of human nature.On the other had I can remember few of my teachers and little of the subjects which seemed to me irrelevant to my life.

These other subjects are interesting, and they might have been made interesting to me.No one tried to interest me in them;;they were put before me as things that I had to have to get into college.The teachers of them did not appear to my curious,active mind.The result was that I did not really work at them and so got only what stuck by dent of repetition:the barest rudiments of a school education.When I knock at the college gates,I was prepared for a college education in some branches;my mind was hungry enough for the answers to some profound questions to have made me work and develop myself,especially on lines which I know now had no ready answers,only more and ever more questions:science,metaphysics etc.I was not in the least curious about Greek,Latin,mathematics,and the other “knowledge”required by the standardization of that day.

(B) No man ever looks at the world with pristine eyes.He sees it edited by a definite set of customs and institutions and ways of thing.Even in his philosophical probings he cannot go behind these stereotypes;his very concepts of the true and the false will still have reference to his particular traditional customs.John Dewey has said in alll seriousness that the part played by custom in shaping the behavior of the individual as over against anyway in which he can affect traditional custom,is as the portion of the total vocabulary of his mother togue over against those words of his own baby talk that are taken up into the vernacular of his family.When one seriously studies the social orders that have had the opportunity to develop autonomously,the figures become no more than an exact and matter-of-fact observation.The life history of the individual is first and foremost an accommodation to the patterns and standards traditionally handed down in his community.From the moment of his birth the customs into which he is born shape his experience and behaviour.By the time he can talk,he is the little creature of his culture,and by the time he is grown and able to take part in its activities,its habits are his habits,its beliefs his beliefs,its impossibilities his impossibilities.Every child that is born to his group will share them with him,and no child born into one on the opposite side of the globe can ever achieve the thousandth part.There is no social problem it is more incumbent upon us to understand this of the

role of custom.Until we are intelligent as to its laws and varieties,the main complicating facts of human life must remain unintelligible.

The study of custom can be profitable only after certain preliminary propositions have been accepted,and some of these propositions have been violently opposed.In the first place any scientific study requires that there be no preferential weighting of one or another of the items in the series it selects for its consideration.In all the less controversial fields like the study of cacti or termites or the nature of nebulae,the necessary method of study is to group the relevant material and to take note of all possible variation, that of Western civilization.

Anthropology was by definition impossible as long as these distinctions between ourselves and the primitive,ourselves and barbarian,ourselves and pagan,held sway over people’s minds.It was necessary first to arrive at that degree of sophistication where we no longer set our own belief over against our neighbour’s superstition.It was necessary to recognize that these institutions which are based on the same premises,let us say the supernatural,must be considered together,our own among the rest.

1. According to the passage,which one is correct? ()

C. The custom will influence his experience and behavior while he is born.

∑X

M=_____ =74.63

N

M=平均数∑=总和 X=分数 N=人数

People who do hard physical labor were especially interesting to him. “I wanted to get away from the world of words and political matters and parties – the things a president does,” Dr. Coleman later explained to news writers. “As a college president you begin to take yourself very seriously and to think you have power you don't. You forget things about people. I wanted to relearn things I’d forgotten.” Telling no on e of his plans, Dr. Coleman started his study leave on a farm in Canada, hundreds of miles from his college. Getting up at 4:30 each morning, working thirteen hours a day in fields, he prepared himself physically for his next job, digging ditches in Atlanta, GeorgiA、 After that, the college president washed dishes ina Boston restaurant. Are you always cold? Maybe you should sit in a room painted in a warm color such as soft orange. Are you often sad? Maybe you should sit in a yellow room. Some researchers believe that color has the power to affect our feelings. They believe that colors affect almost everyone in the same way. They tested the idea in different settings. One study was done in a workplace. The researchers painted heavy boxes white and light boxes black. They wanted to see how color affected the workers' feelings. Which boxes do you think were more difficult to lift? The heavy white ones? No. The black boxes were more difficult. The white boxes were heavier but they looked light. The researchers think that this is because light colors seem light. Another study was done at a hospital with brown and dark green walls. Painters repainted the hospital walls in bright colors — bright orange on the first floor, bright pink on the second, bright green on the third. Guess what happened? The patients changed. They visited each other and talked more. The workers also changed and were happier about their work. Another study was done at a school. Researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, studied children with behavior problems in their classroom. When the walls were brown and yellow, the children's heart rates went up and they were overactive. When the walls were light and dark blue, the children's heart rates were slower and the children were much calmer. If this is true, people might start to think carefully about the colors around them—not just in houses, but also in offices, in schools, in hospitals, in gyms, in prisons, in museums, and in
