Canadians are blessed with an abundance of natural wonders with enough lakes, mountains and rivers to explore for a lifetime. We’ve also got some of the most shocking waterfalls on Earth. Pissing Mare Falls — Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador

Pissing Mare Falls may have a funny sounding name but they’re no joke: in fact, they’re one of the highest waterfalls in Canada. Located in the beautiful Gros Morne National Park, the falls are only accessible by boat tour.

Takakkaw Falls — Yoho National Park, British Columbia

Takakkaw translated from Cree loosely means “the magnificent”,and it’s a suitable word for the second-highest waterfalls in Canada. After a steep drive up a winding road, these falls are only a short hike from the parking lot along a wheelchair accessible path.

Niagara Falls — Niagara Falls, Ontario

Niagara Falls are the most famous waterfalls in Canada. Actually they are made up of three different falls —the Horseshoe Falls, the most powerful in North America, are the only one located on the Canadian side. Melting glaciers (冰川)formed the falls thousands of years ago and the beautiful green color is due to dissolved salt and finely ground (磨)rock.

Bridal Veil Falls — Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park, British Columbia

Pretty and delicate, the Bridal Veil Falls are located just east of Chilliwack, British Columbia, and really do look like a bride with a beautiful veil (面纱), with water gently pouring over smooth rock. An easy 15-minute walk to the falls takes you through rich leaves. Picnic tables are available, and there are lots of opportunities for viewing wildlife along the way.

I have learned a great many things from playing football. And it has changed my entire attitude toward life.

In my freshman year at high school, I was shy, had low self-confidence and turned away from

seemingly impossible challenges. On the first day of freshman practice, the team warmed up with a game of touch football. However, during the game, I didn’t run as hard as I could, nor did I try to escape from my defender and get open. The fact of the matter was that I really didn’t want to be the one at fault if I dropped the ball and the play didn’t succeed. I didn’t want to take the responsibility of helping the team because I was too afraid of making a mistake. That aspect of my character led the first year of my high school life. I avoided asking questions in class, afraid they might be considered too stupid by my classmates.

During my second-year season, my position at backup guard led me to play in the games since another backup guard on my team was seriously injured. From then on, I made mistakes sometimes and was blamed by my coaches indeed. However, those criticisms didn’t make my teammates look down upon me, but they helped me a lot. At times I made great plays, for which I was congratulated. Now, I feel like a changed person.

Over the years, playing football has taught me what it takes to succeed. From months of tough practices, I have learned to work hard. From my coaches and teammates, I have learned to work well with others in a group. But most importantly, I have gained self-confidence. I realize that it is necessary to risk failure in order to gain success. Now, I welcome the challenge.

What do you do at the end of the day when you’ve finished your work and finally have some time for yourself? How you spend your free time can have a big influence on your mental health. Hobbies can help you relax and ease pent-up (被压抑的)stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer.

But, interestingly, how you spend your free time can also influence your work performance. Researchers at the University of Sheffield’s Institute of Work Psychology in the U.K. found that pursuing hobbies can boost your confidence about how well you perform your job. But there’s one warning: Your hobby has to be significantly different from what you do from 9-to-5.

To study connection between work and activities in spare time, researchers hired 129 people who

worked and were actively involved in hobbies like rock climbing, playing football and singing. They had them complete surveys to see how serious and committed they were to their hobbies and how demanding their jobs were. Then, each month for seven months, participants were asked how many hours they spent on their hobbies and how they rated their ability to perform at work. Researchers found that if people have hobbies similar to what they do at work, their on-the-job confidence can suffer. It’s likely because their work and spare time have the same mental and physical demands, so they’re always feeling drained.

Those playful pastimes act as a barrier between their professional and personal lives, giving them downtime to “recharge their batteries”, said the lead researcher Ciara Kelly. “When we feel like we have the confidence to deal with challenges in our jobs, we are more likely to be able to build a sustainable (可持续的) career and remain healthy, productive, happy and employable over our lifetimes. It’s important to consider how our spare activities might play a role in that process. So it’s important that you should make the best of your spare time and choose a hobby that benefits your job.”

8.What hobbies may improve people’s working performance?

A.Hobbies requiring physical strength.

B.Hobbies demanding computer skills.

C.Hobbies having nothing to do with your work.

D.Hobbies closely connected with your majors.

9.What does the underlined word “drained” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Exhausted.

B. Confused.

C. Energetic.

D. Bored.

10.Which of the following may Ciara Kelly agree with?

A.Hobbies prevent people from concentrating on their work.

B.People acquire energy through their hobbies.

C.Hobbies help people choose a good career.

D.People gain confidence from challenges.

11.What does the author mainly tell us in the text?

A.The advantages of personal hobbies.

B.The best method to choose our hobbies.

C.The relationship between hobbies and jobs.

D.The secret of being excellent in your profession.

Stories play a vital role in the growth and development of children. The books they read and the characters they get to know can become like friends. It’s also good for children to understand that books are a useful source of information and that good reading skills are important for success in their future lives.

Children who can read well are more likely to have higher confidence levels. This will benefit them in school as they’ll feel able to participate fully in activities. Another part of building confidence is to know where you fit into the world. Stories can help with this process by showing children what people’s lives are like where they live and in other parts of the world.

Stories are a great way to introduce new words and ideas into a child’s language — starting with picture books for the very young, working up to more complex novels for teenagers. Fiction based on real life can also help children with their own life experience — it shows them how diverse the

world is and that some people’s lives are vastly different from theirs. And the process is done in a natural way. There’s no actual teaching involved at all, but they learn from simply reading the story.

Reading helps children understand that there are other children who feel the same way and they are not alone. This helps children understand that feelings are normal and should be expressed. Watching their responses to the feelings of the characters in the stories will give you some idea of how a child feels about certain situations and emotions. For example, how the child responds to the character in the story feeling sad or scared will give you some idea of how the child thinks.

As you can see, children’s stories are important for a number of reasons and form a vital part of the growing process. Being part of that process can bring children a sense of satisfaction as well as being great fun. So, go and get your children some wonderful books to allow them to enjoy a relaxing bedtime story.

12.What can we know from Paragraph 1?

A.Reading stories benefits children a lot.

B.Reading is the best way to gain information.

C.Reading stories helps children make more friends.

D.Reading skills should be developed at a young age.

13.How could reading stories raise children’s confidence?

A.Inspiring children to get good grades.

B.Supporting children’s language development.

C.Aiding children with living in a better family environment.

D.Allowing children to explore their suitable positions in society.

14.What does the author think about learning through reading?

A.Unrealistic.

B. Effective.

C. Time-saving.

D. Expensive.

15.What can be inferred from the text?

A.Most teenagers are fond of complex novels.

B.Picture books are lacking in ^al life situations.

Youngsters usually benefit from having a relationship with someone older and wiser to mentor (指导) them. The mentor might be a teacher, family member or more experienced peer. However, not everyone is suitable to be an influential, positive role model. 16 Here are some common characteristics of good role models.

They are confident. Most people admire those who have much confidence in themselves. 17 So they are able to acknowledge their skills and achievements without becoming arrogant (自大的). Just as Child Development Specialist Dr. Robyn Silverman suggests, healthy self-confidence shows as pride in who you are and what you’ve learned throughout your life.

18 Role models show their commitment to a desired goal by their actions and are willing to invest the necessary time and effort to achieve success. They don’t give up easily and continue trying when faced with challenges. Their determination to succeed encourages youngsters to follow

through and reach the goals they set for themselves.

They are respectful. 19 Young people appreciate being treated with respect and admire those who treat them and others that way. Role models who show selflessness and an equal, non-prejudiced view of those different from them earn the admiration of others.

They are optimistic and creative. Role models inspire others with a positive outlook on life. For example, a community leader faced with a financial setback (挫折) might welcome the opportunity to organize a fund-raising project that pulls everyone together in a constructive manner. 20

A.They are hard-working.

B.They are knowledgeable.

C.Role models show respect for others.

D.Pick someone having the same hobbies and similar qualities as you.

E.Good role models have a healthy appreciation of their accomplishments.

F.Effective role models possess desirable characteristics that make them easy to look up to.

G.Role models tend to see the bright side in difficult situations and can find creative solutions.第二部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分)

第二节(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

On a Sunday afternoon I was waiting for the music hall to open. I went there to get in with my artist friends and set up to paint during the show to let people know that we were good at painting. They were running late so I had to wait for them on the grass next to the parking lot. After some time, I just pulled out a canvas (画布) 4 inches by 4 inches and a few tubes of paint, preparing my task of painting in a while. Some music was being played from a car parked nearby and I felt really comfortable for such wonderful atmosphere.

I certainly wasn’t working on a masterpiece but I was soon absorbed into the work. I became interested in painting when I was very young. As I was painting, I noticed a shadow on the grass by me, and looked up into a man’s face. He was just beside me, standing there. He was a little unsteady on his feet and smelled lightly of alcohol. This was not a surprise in the neighborhood because many people would watch me painting, which of course made me a little proud. He watched me paint and I looked up and smiled a few times. He seemed to know painting well and later he told me he painted when he was young and many people thought his paintings were wonderful.

“I used to be an artist,” he told me seriously. I sat up, pulled a canvas 16 inches by 20 inches from my bag with some extra brushes and said, “I bet you still are. Why not paint one now?” I said and gave him the tools for him to paint.

He looked at me, perhaps thinking I would laugh at him. Then he dropped his bag next to me. He sat down and started to paint out some mountains, the trees not far away from them and an eagle feather (羽毛). His painting was really wonderful and I praised him for what he had done. He was happy to share his story.

Paragraph 1:

_______________________________________________________________

Slowly he started telling me about his life.

Paragraph 2:

_______________________________________________________________

When he was finished, he handed me the painting and we talked again.

第二节

Paragraph 1:

Slowly he started telling me about his life. It was a story of hopes broken, dreams not realized and shame keeping him from returning home. He once spent a lot of time in painting, which brought him a lot of prizes. Every day, he would spend much time looking at the mountains and trees that he painted. In that way, his paintings were so wonderful. But unfortunately, few people liked to buy his paintings. He turned to drinking alcohol and didn’t paint anymore.

Paragraph 2:

When he was finished, he handed me the painting and we talked again. He said he had no way to keep his masterpiece. After that, we hugged and I gave him a sandwich from my bag and wished him well. I also handed him the little painting that I had completed. He thanked me again and again and I saw the joy and pride in his eyes. As he walked away, I noticed his back was straighter and head higher. He turned, smiled, and said, “I feel like a man again.”

人教版高中英语选修6各单元课文原文

选修6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.
