A

It had been snowing since two o’clock that afternoon. Time was slipping away, and as I watched the snowflakes fall onto my car, I really began to wonder if I was going to make it on time. Of course I must , as there was no option.

Several weeks ago, all the things that my daughter Alexandra had talked about were the Christmas concert to be held in her school and some rumors about it. “Mom, Rachel was supposed to sing alone, but guess what happened? She’s not! Linda will replace her to do it.”“Mom, I get to stand next to Tyler in the whole concert!”“Mom, you won’t believe it, but Lexie’s whole family is coming to the concert, even from another state!”Making a long way out of state to see third graders sing Christmas carols seemed to be a pretty big deal for her.

As I sat in traffic, I thought about all the school events I had attended alone. Alexandra never mentioned it, but I wondered how she felt about me being the only whoever came to her events.

My own family lived out of town, and her father and his family never quite managed to fit those things into their schedules. I wondered if it bothered her.

The concert was scheduled to begin at seven o’clock. With only a few minutes to spare, I found myself running: first, through the snow-drifted parking lot, then through the school passage. I entered the crowded hall and found a vacant seat near the front. From her place onstage, Alexandra saw me run for the chair, and she smiled. I was close enough to hear the loud conversation of the children onstage.

“Look, Alexandra, there is my aunt and my cousin. They came all the way from West Virginia. I can’t believe my whole family is here!” Alex smiled at Lexie and said, “My whole family is here, too! Look, there she is!” Alex gave me a big smile. I waved back at her, never once noticing the melting snow dripping off my head. It suddenly occurred to me that while we tried to teach our children all about life, they actually taught us what life was all about.

21. What was Alexandra’s attitude towards the Christmas concert?

A. defensive

B. disappointed

C. enthusiastic

D. indifferent

22. According to Paragraph 3, the writer worried that _____________.

A. She might miss the Christmas concert.

B. Her husband was too busy to attend the school events

C. Alexandra felt disappointed to see only her mom present

D. Alexandra wouldn’t perform well in the Christmas concert.

23. It could be inferred from the passage that the writer________.

A. attached importance to her daughter’s school events.

B. drove to attend the concert from another state.

C. failed to understand her daughter’s words.

D. regretted not singing with her daughter.

24. What might be the best title of the passage?

A. My whole family is here.

B. Express your love in time.

C. Understanding makes miracles.

D. A smile brings an end to a conflict.

Mars(火星) appears to be flowing with small streams of salty water, at least in the summer, scientists reported Monday. “It suggests that it would be possible for there to be life today on

Mars,” NASA’s science mission chief, John Grunsfeld, said at a news conference on September 28, 2015.

The streams are about 12 to 15 feet wide and 300 feet or more long, scientists said. “What we’re dealing with is wet soil, thin layers of wet soil, not stan ding water,” said Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona at Tucson, the principal scientist for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s high-resolution imaging experiment.

Because liquid water is essential to life, the findings could have major implications for the possibility of Martian life. The researchers said further exploration is needed to determine whether microscopic life exists on the planet.

The presence of liquid water could also make life easier for astronauts visiting or living on Mars. Water co uld be used for drinking and for creating oxygen and rocket fuel. NASA’s goal is to send humans there in the 2030s.

The evidence of flowing water consists largely of dark, narrow streaks(条痕)on the surface that tend to appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade the rest of the year.

Mars is extremely cold even in summer, and the streaks are in places where the temperature is as low as minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. But salt can lower the freezing point of water and melt ice. The source(源头)of the water is a mystery. Scientists noted it could be melting ice. It could be an underground aquifer, which is rock or sand that can hold water. It is possibly water vapor from the thin Martian atmosphere, or it may be a combination Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration program, said the only definitive way for now to determine whether there’s life on Mars is to collect rocks and soil for analysis on Earth — something a U. S. lander set for lift-off in 2020 will do.

25. What would he the best title for the text?

D. human beings

27. Scientists are uncertain about the ______of the water on Mars.

A. state

B. source

C. temperature

D. taste

28.What matters to the existence of liquid water on Mars?

A. The distance from the sun.

B. The favorable climate.

C. The gravity of the earth

D. The salt in it.

C

Anyone can try to lead a group, but not every individual is cut out fro leadership. The better leaders possess a few qualities that can mean the difference between the success and failure of the group. These are the qualities the leader of higher rank will look for when choosing a leader for a group, or when evaluating the performance of a leader. They’re also the qualities team members want in a group leader, and appreciate when they find them.

Take Responsibility

Group leaders might share tasks around a group as necessary, but eventually a group leader needs to be able to accept that responsibility lies on her shoulders. That means that if things go wrong in a group project, she’s the one who must accept the consequences and work out what mistakes were made. The group leader won’t always have the power to control everything group members do, but he should be ready to admit any mistakes the group has made as a result of his leadership.

Concern for Members

The group leader has a commitment to the task or project at hand, but perhaps more importantly, he has a real concern for each and every person who is part of his group. This means getting to know the strengths, weaknesses and goals of team members, as well as making time to build the group through collective activities. The group leader should make sure that everyone is included, even if an individual is new to a group.

Good Listener

The group leader needs to be able to listen to the suggestions, complaints (抱怨) and ideas of group members. Not only will this allow complaints to be addressed and potentially suitable ideas to be put into practice, but a leader who listens will also encourage group members to share their concerns and thoughts, creating an atmosphere of free speech and productivity.

29. The passage is mainly about .

A. choosing a good leader for a group

B. assessing the performance of a leader

C. qualities of a good group leader

D. team members’ appreciation of a leader

30. According to “Concern for Members”, which of the following is a good quality of a leader?

A. fair

B. reliable

C. determined

D. generous

31. Which of the following is not the benefit of being a good listener?

A. Offer a chance for group members to express themselves freely

B. Allow the leader to put all his ideas into practice easily

C. Make it possible to deal with group members’ complaints

D. Make group members productive by sharing their thoughts

In many parts of the world, cars play an important role in daily life and many societies would not exist without them. 36 But this is the prediction made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by government but also by car manufacturers(制造商).

The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program. 37 That will mean much saving, no accidents and better use

of roads. The super-intelligent car of the 21st century will drive itself, 38 . Instead, we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.

According to Dr. David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air, and caused more deaths than both world wars put together.

Davis says, cars will be fitted with some intelligent devices(装置) to regulate(调节)the distance between one car and another. 39 . Computers are much safer drivers than people, so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people.

By 2010, Dr, David Davis believes, car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road, whatever the weather conditions, buy projecting an image(影像)of the road ahead on to the car’s windscreen. 40 . Cars will be connected by an electronic bar to the car in front to form “road-trains”. “The front vehicle in such a train burns the normal amount of fuel.” sys Davis. “But all the others in the train would burn about ten percent of the normal amount, and so produce about ten percent of the pollution.”

A. The team there believes that by 2030 all cars will be computerized.

B. They believe that cars will become more important in 20 years.

C. And it will not be owned by one individual.

D. And by 2030, cars will travel in line, linked to each other electronically.

E. So the idea that in 20 years’ time, no one will own cars may be hard to believe.

F. Every driver will use less fuel in the car he owns.

G. The car will automatically speed up, or slow down, to match the speed of the car in front.

A、B、C错误,D正确。 A 5.
