Yang Mi, a lovely and confident 17-year-old student, is the first Chinese high school student to appear on the cover of the popular young adults’ fashion magazine Seventeen.

“Y ang is IN ,” said Wang Lih uan, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen. “Yang is active and mature because of her knowledge on everything from academic studies, to books on art, to movies. We found she’s the very style we’re looking for to represent young people’s attitudes.”

Yang also impressed Wang with her fluent English when they first met last year. As the hostess of an English broadcasting program at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University ,she is always praised for speaking English almost like a native speak er. “I’ve built up my English by watching thousands of English DVDs since I was 10,” she explained.

But for her, watching isn’t enough. Last year , while in Senior 1, Yang met a talented boy who showed self-made DV movies at the English Corner in her school.

“I thought it was so cool and I knew that I should start making my own films ,” she said. So she wrote a campus story, persuaded schoolmates to star in it and then began shooting a 30-minute DV movie, all in English. “I played one of the leading roles , actually I was everything in my film. I worked on it every single day during holidays,” she recalled. The movie finally became a big hit on campus , earning Yang a strong reputation as a DV movie director.

But this is not the only field she wants to master. Despite being a science student, she likes art, literature and fashion design very much.

“There are people who can be artists ,there are people who edit books ,and there are people who become film producers. But I just hope to mix all the things up!” she said. “There is an old saying I believe: Chance favours only the prepared mind.”

P ASSAGE 2

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose you place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. Wh en such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.

Even if you do make an obvious mist ake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech ---“I have a Dream”, you may notice that he stumbles(结巴) over his words twice during the speech . Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.

People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker's ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker's attractiveness by making him more human.

As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free you mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.

5. The underlined part in the first paragraph means that listeners ______. A. will not be smarter than you B. may not notice your mistakes C. can do better than you D. don ’t know what you are talking about

6 You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ______. A. you fix your attention on the content B. you don’t fully understand the speech

C. you don’t know what the speaker plans to say

D. you find the way of speech-making more important

7. It can be inferred from the passage that ______. A. giving a speech is like giving a performance B. one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad

C. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made

D. the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be.

8. Why does the author mention Martin Luther King?

A. To prove that people regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication

B. To explain that even famous people make mistakes too.

C. To admire his calmness when he stumbled in his speech

D. To illustrate that it is natural for people to make mistakes in speech.

9. What would be the best title for the passage? A. How to Be a Perfect Speaker B. How to Make a Perfect Speech C. Don't Expect a Perfect Speech D. Don't Expect Mistakes in a Speech

PASSAGE 3

Glacier National park in Montana shares boundaries with Canada, an American Indian reservation, and a national forest. Along the North Fork of the Flathead River, the park also borders about 17,000 acres of private lands that are currently used for ranching (经营牧场), timber, and agriculture. This land is an important part of the habitat and migratory routes for several endangered species that frequent the park. These private lands are essentially the only ones available for development in the region.

With encouragement from the park, local landowners initiated a land-use planning effort to guide the future of the North Fork. The park is a partner in an interlocal agreement that calls for resource-managing agencies to work together and with the more than 400 private owners in the area. A draft plan has been prepared, with the objective of maintaining traditional economic uses but limiting new development that would damage park resources. V oluntary action by landowners, in cooperation with the park and the county, is helping to restrict subdivisions (供出售的小块土地), maintain wildlife corridors, and minimize any harmful impact on the environment.

The willingness of local landowners to participate in this protection effort may have been stimulated by concerns that Congress would impose a legislative solution.

Nevertheless, many local residents want to retain the existing character of the area.

Meetings between park officials and landowners have led to a dramatically improved understanding of all concerns.

10. The passage mainly discusses

A. the endangered species in Glacier National Park

B. the protection of lands surrounding Glacier National Park

C. conservation laws imposed by the state of Montana

D. conservation laws imposed by Congress

11. Why are the private lands surrounding Glacier National Park so important? A. Because they function as a hunting preserve. B. Because they are restricted to government use. C. Because they are heavily populated.

D. Because they contain natural habitats of threatened species.

12. The word “ones ” in paragraph 1 refers to A. private lands B. endangered species C. migratory routes D. ranching, timber, agriculture

13. The word “initiated ” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to A. started B. requested C. purchased D. considered

14. The relationship between park officials and neighboring landowners may best be described as A. indifferent B. intimate C. cooperative D. disappointing

15. In paragraph 3, the author implies that landowners might be responding to environmental concerns for which of the following reasons?

A. They wish to stimulate economic growth.

B. They wish to improve their public image.

C. They have a tradition of cooperating with the government.

D. They fear federal legislation.

16. The word “stimulated ” in line 16 is closest in meaning to A. motivated B. anticipated C. substituted D. undermined

(4)in that 35 1 which 33 1 whichever 30 1 where 28 1 交际用语如何应答21 1 其中22、27、35的错误率较高。

Unit 1 Presenting a Speech Road Building Good morning, everyone. Today I'l l be talking about the relationship between road building and the development of the American economy during the 18th century. About 300 years ago, the United States' economy was growing rapidly, mainly because of a booming trade in two important agricultural products: grain and cotton. Grain output in the eastern part of America increased quickly at that time due to the rapidly growing population and the large number of immigrants from Europe. As a result, the demand for grain almost doubled. For this reason, the trade in grain first developed in this part of the country. At the same time, the road system was gradually built up in order to transport the grain from the rural areas to various cities. The road building clearly helped develop the economy quickly in these areas and in the cities as well. During the same period, farmers in the South could get a large amount of laborers from Africa, and they started to grow cotton. As the cotton output increased, the farmers needed to sell it in other places. As a result, many roads were built to link the rural areas to the cities. At first, this trade of grain and cotton took place along the coast, or near rivers and lakes. It took place there because it was easy and cheap to transport goods from one place to another. Before 1700, it was very expensive to move the goods by road.
