Last Sunday, I went to Haimen to go shopping. I saw a lot of people standing in front of the super-market when I was walking down the street.

I wondered what was happening there. I hurried to go there to take a look. I ran quickly. To my surprise, there was a girl sitting in the street. The girl with a school bag was about 17 years old. I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film — it wanted somebody as well known as Paul — he stood up for me. As a third-generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away.
