One day at the end of class, little Johnny's teacher asked the class to go home and think of a story to be concluded with the moral(寓意、教训) of that story.

The following day the teacher asked for the first volunteer to tell their story. Little Suzy raised her hand.

"My dad owns a farm and every Sunday we load the chicken eggs on the truck(货车) and drive into town to sell them at the market. Well, one Sunday we hit a big bump and all the eggs flew out of the basket and onto the road." When the teacher asked for the moral of the story, Suzy replied. So he pulled out his machete and killed 20 more. Then his machete broke, so he killed the last ten with his bare hands."

Imagine this situation. You pass a group of people. The people are talking to each other. You cannot hear what they are saying. But suddenly they start laughing. What would you think? Would you think they were laughing at something funny that one of them said? Or—be honest with yourself —would you think they were laughing at you? Yes, you.

Being laughed at is a common fear. But a major study published in 2009 found that this fear is not the same around the world. It differs from culture to culture. People in Finland were the least likely to believe that people laughing in their presence(在他们面前)were making fun of them. Less than 10% of Finns(芬兰人) in the study said they would think that, compared to 80% of people in Thailand.

Shy people often avoid(回避)situations that would force them into close contact with other people. They worry that something they say or do will make other people laugh at them. But some people worry much more than others. They may have a disorder called gelotophobia. Gelos is a Greek word. It means laughter. Phobia means fear. This fear of laughter can be truly sad for those who live with it. It can affect how they lead their lives.

In the study, a team from the University of Zurich led more than 90 researchers from around the world. They wanted to understand the difference between normal shyness and true gelotophobia. Another purpose of the study was to compare the levels of fear of being laughed at in different cultures. The researchers surveyed more than 22,000 people in 42 different languages. The findings appeared in the scientific journal Humor. 42. According to the writer, when you pass a group of people who are talking and suddenly laugh, you

A flash mob is a group of strangers who get together suddenly in a public place, behave in a predetermined(预先决定的) manner for a predetermined amount of short time, then quickly move away from each other. The persons who take part in a flash mob are called flash mobbers. They share news about the time and place for an upcoming event through postings on blogs, chain e-mail messages, SMS text messages and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The first successful flash mob, which happened on June 3, 2003 at Macy's department store, was created by Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine. He sent flash mobbers to one of four staging areas where they received further instructions about the final event and location just before the event began. It wasn't until June 2006, when Wasik published an article about his flash mobs in Harper's, that their source was publicly known. Recently a “Clean Your Plate Campaign”, set up on weibo, is joined by

millions of netizens across China to stop food wastage.

People from different walks of life support the campaign. Different

kinds of reports and public service advertisings can be found on the news

media. Students in schools and universities are required not to waste anything

on the dining table. Restaurants suggest the customers to change their habit of

ordering too much food because a lot of that food ended up being wasted. Holiday eaters are urged to “clean their plates” and are asked to take leftover food home in “doggy bags (打包袋).”

The Communist Party of China, too, has promised to take steps to cut down food wastage and follow an austere(简朴的) working style, because Authorities have to take the lead in saving food, especially when taxpayers'(纳税人) money is used to create waste.

The wastage of food in China is estimated to be 50 million tons every year, enough to feed about 200 million people for one year. The United Nations said last year in a report that 868 million people were hungry in the world.

The “clean your plate” campaign is part of a worldwide try to stop food from being wasted. The United Nations estimates that $1 trillion (yes, that’s a very big number) worth of food is wasted each year. Most of that is lost during food production and transportation, but a very large amount is because of wasting by people.

You may have noticed that the world’s population is not equal distributed(均匀分布的)around our planet. There are some countries where people seem to be living nearly on top of each other because conditions are overcrowded. Then there are others where it seems that hardly anybody lives. What influences this unequal distribution of people? There are specific advantages and disadvantages of living in a certain area. Many factors(因素)influence people’s choice of location.

Climate is one of the most important factors. It is the usual weather conditions in an area. Areas that have bad weather are generally less perfect as places to live in. The north and south poles at the top and bottom of the earth may be beautiful in their natural way, but the disadvantage of the extremely cold and windy conditions usually keeps people away. When it comes to climate, warm conditions and a normal amount of rainfall are advantages that attract people.

Natural resources(资源) are things that we get from nature that help us live. They are considered as another main factor. Each area offers different resources, and therefore attracts different groups of people. People who enjoy the beach car make their living by catching and selling the ocean’s many fish and other sea creatures. Those who prefer farming can take advantage of rich soil(土壤) near rivers. Some people are willing to accept the disadvantages of the terrible conditions of deserts(沙漠) or mountains in order to take advantage of the resources like oil or woods.

because of the resource of .

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.
