Passage 1

More than 300,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year.

At a speed of only 30miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third-floor window. Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half.

Therefore drivers or front seat passengers over 14 in most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to 50 dollars . It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind.

However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your vehicle; or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special vehicle; or if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it. Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt. Remember you may be taken to court for not doing so, and you may be fined if you can not prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it.

1.Determine your goals. What do you want to get out of a college education?

Academic(学术的) knowledge? Leadership experience within a club? Decide what is

most important to you. Then devote proportionate(成比例的)amounts of time to

Passage 4

Someone might set fire to a building for the insurance money, or to hurt one particular person. Arson (放火) is a serious crime. And where a case exists, computers can help find out who does it.

In a case in Canada, an arsonist had been setting fire to garages for eight months. It was not that the police had no trace to follow—they had received hundreds of pieces of secret information about the crime. They just didn’t know where to begin.

First the police created a file of the arsonist. They decided the place of all his fires on a computer map. The computer decided by postal code the neighborhood where the criminal most likely lived. One piece of information many people had given the police was that a dark blue van

was seen in the areas around the time of the fires. Going to the computer database of vans, cars and buses records, the police pulled out the names and addresses of all owners of dark blue vans who were living in the neighborhood. By comparing the postal codes with the addresses of the blue van owners, the police came up with a short list of suspects.

One of the van owners seemed uncomfortable when the police questioned him. Inside his van, the police found gas and rags. They had much to do with the arson. The man was arrested.

C) Arson. D) Making a fire.

Passage 5

Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child -or even an animal, such as a pigeon -can learn to recognize faces. We all take this ability for granted.

We also tell people apart by how they behave. When we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from others.

Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. If you were asked to describe what a ―nice face‖ looked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so. But if you were asked to describe a ―nice person‖, you might begin to think about someone who was kind, considerate, friendly, warm, and so forth.

There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels and acts. Gordon Allports, an American psychologist, found nearly 18.000 English words characterizing differences in people’s behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing, or typing, his personality. Bookworms, conservatives, military types-people are described with such terms.

People have always tried to ―type‖ each other. Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to

show the audience whether they played the villain’s or the hero’s role. In fact, the words ―person‖ and ―personality‖ come from the Latin persona, meaning ―mask‖. Today, most television and movie actors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell the ―good guys‖ from the ―bad guys‖ because the two types differ in appearance as well as in actions.

21. The main idea of this passage is C_______.
