Passage A

All Great Journeys Start with a Dream

We all have dreams. Usually, while we’re asleep.

Such dreams could be more hurtful than helpful. For example, imagine dreaming you’re eating shredded wheat, only to wake up and find half the mattress gone! Well, I’m not talking about that type of dream. Rather, I’m thinking about one’s vision, aspiration, or fervent hope for the future. Our dream is the song of our soul. Life without one is reduced to a hollow existence.

But life with a dream is filled with meaning and purpose.

Besides being the drummer and chief lyricist for the rock ban d ―Rush‖1, Neil Peart is also an author and philosopher. Look at how beautifully he expresses the relationship between life and a dream:请看他是何等优美地表述了生活和梦想之间的关系:―Life is just a candle and a dream must give it flame.‖―生命就像一支蜡烛,而由梦想将其点燃。‖Richard M. DeVos, the founder of Amway Corp., also writes about the flame of hope:安利公司的创始人理查德·M·德沃斯也谈及希望之火:―No life is more tragic than that of the individual who nurses a dream, an ambition, always wishing and hoping, but never giving it a chance to happen.

He nurses the flickering dream, but never lets it break out into flame.‖他的梦想只能发出摇曳的微弱光亮,却永远不能迸发出火焰。‖

Most of us have a dream, or heart’s desire. But the trouble is most of us have the on/off switch of our dream set to OFF. Whenever we say, ―I can’t,‖ we set the switch to OFF. Whenever we believe we can, we set the switch to ON. Simple, isn’t it? Just because I believe I can do something doesn’t mean there won’t be any problems. But once I believe I can do it, I will seek solutions for every problem I stumble on. And since it is a law of life that we find what we look for, if I look for solutions, I will find them.

Any worthy dream is a dream worthy of accomplishing. Once I realize I can do it, the next step is to make a commitment. As soon as we make a commitment, great power is released. What seemingly were insurmountable hurdles are now reduced to obstacles of laughable insignificance.

Our dreams don’t have to be grand to be great. We don’t have to become the world’s greatest pianist, an Olympic medal winner, or an internationally acclaimed superstar. An aunt of mine sold gloves in a department store for most of her life. Her dream was to be the friendliest and most helpful salesperson around. Year after year, the same customers would return and deliberately seek her out. She brighten ed everyone’s day and touched the lives of thousands. Was her dream any less significant than that of a prominent person? Of course not,决然不会。but we all have the power to follow a dream that will make a difference to us and those we meet.

Before our dreams can come true, don’t we have to dream? Isn’t there a good reason for dreaming? After all, how can we travel any further than our dream? How can we become any greater than our dream? Author of As a Man Thinketh2, James Allen expressed the same idea,《沉思集》作者詹姆斯·艾伦曾经抒发过同样的想法,―Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day you’re your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.‖你的愿景是你有朝一日必将如斯成长的承诺,你的理想是你要将自己的抱负最终展示于世的预言。‖

P36 Passage B

What Are We Chasing After in Our Dreams

So many people just exist; they have no goals, desires or aspirations. They may have been ambitious at one time in their life but ran into disappointments, detours and failures. After a while they chose not to reach for the stars and settled for the mundane.

Michelangelo Buonarroti1 , painter, sculptor, architect and poet once said:画家、雕塑家、建筑师兼诗人的米开朗基罗·博那罗蒂曾说:―The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.‖―于吾辈众人,危之大者,不在目标之高而难达,在过低而易就。‖

In most instances, that which lies within each of us is much more than we ever come to know. We give in to mediocre and find ourselves settling for less than we are capable of.

We dared to dream as children and then meet up with real life as adults and relinquish our visions as unreal possibilities. It is a shame we often cease living, learning and achieving and meet a premature demise. We become comfortable in less and determine the work to become more is not worth the effort. The possibility of attaining greatness becomes an unattainable desire of our own decision. We give up on ourselves and our dreams and possibilities. Oh, what greatness goes undiscovered, what possibilities lay covered with fear and lack of ambition.

Perhaps you have run into people who lacked faith in you, and your abilities, putting doubt on any dreams or visions you shared with them. You are not the observation others have of you; you are the thoughts you have, the actions you take. Others are not in control of your dreams and visions, they can not diminish your desires. You alone are in charge of what you do with your life.

Some dreams and visions may be selfish ambition and you’ll run into other people’s resentments. Some of your achievements may be growth, and others may demonstrate jealousy. Some desires may include a few other people, but benefit many. We should choose our aspirations carefully and determine their merits before we bring them into fruition. For dreams that see mountaintops benefit others, are seen by many, and last through the years.

Many of our achievements are the legacy we leave behind when we depart this earth. But many people never live the legacy they want to leave. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr2 . once said,小奥利佛?W?霍姆斯曾经说过,―Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out." ‖

We should always set goals, and we should desire to continue to achieve and pursue dreams and visions no matter what our age. Dreams are not just for the young. Achievements in life should continue until life has ended.

We need to learn to live life to the fullest until our last breath. We should live while we are alive,活着,就该活得愉快,leaving our demise filled with so many meaningful breaths of living,让死亡充满许多意义丰盈的受用生活的气息,others will envy the life that we lead,并让人们羡慕我们受用过的生活,not the things that weaccumulated.

No one would attempt to go on a trip without directions or a map, following the roads leading to theirdestination. So we should not live our life without setting goals and following our dreams. Remember you have not reached your destination until you have drawn your last breath. And remember today’s actions are the ingredients of which dreams are made. So make your dreams come true by setting goals and acting on your passions and visions, making them a part of your life and future legacy that will live on. ―Things‖ will be forgotten but you through your achievements can live on forever. 11 Discuss with your partner and try to figure out the answers to the following questions. Share your thoughts and responses with the class. 1 Do you agree with the author’s statement that ―So many people just exist; they have no goals, desires or aspirations?‖ 你同意作者所说的:―许多人只是活着而已,他们没有目标、欲望或抱负‖吗? Yes, I do. We can see many people give up their hopes / dreams when they are faced with difficulties. They feel despaired in harsh realities and just exist as a living thing. No, I don’t. Every person has their goals in life,每个人在生活中都有自己的目标,although some of them have their dreams hidden deep at the bottom of their hearts when faced with problems. Different people have different dreams for life. They give up some kind of goals and take up new goals – they change their goals. 2 How do you understand ―…the great danger is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it‖? With this famous saying, 借着这则著名的谚语,the author means that if we set our goals too low we may achieve them effortlessly,作者要说的是,如果我们把目标设置太低,我们可以轻松做到,and do not need to try hard enough;不需要刻苦努力。we achieve the low goals and do not make the greatest possibility come true. That is the greatest danger that keeps us from living to the fullest. 3 ―It is a shame we often cease living, learning and

achieving…‖ What do you think the author means by ―living‖?―我们不再生活,不再学习,不再进取,……,令人羞愧。

In this sentence, ―living‖ particularly means ―spending our life to make our dreams come true‖. When people give up their dreams they give up living their life to pursue a dream, and their life is reduced to staying alive. 4 Did you once give up on your dream? Why?

Open.

5 ―Dreams are not for the young.‖ How do you understand that?―梦不是年轻人的。

People, young or old, should have their dreams, and should not give up hopes. Dreams are not tools to educate / encourage young people. They are the destinations for everybody’s life journeys.

Unit 5

4. 1. was sinking 2. specialty 3. purely 4. discourage 5. unlikely 6. dynamics 7. actually 8. reasonably 9. have perceived 10. extended 5. 1.took a deep interest in 2. fell into 3. sign up

Unit 1> Caring for Our Earth Passage A Frog Story A couple of odd things have happened lately. I have a log cabin in those woods of Northern Wisconsin. I built it by hand and also added a greenhouse to the front of it. It is a joy to live in. In fact, I work out of my home doing audio production and environmental work. As a tool of that trade I have a computer and a studio. I also have a tree frog that has taken up residence in my studio. How odd, I thought, last November when I first noticed him sitting atop my sound-board over my figured that he(and I say he,though I really don’t have a clue if she is a he or vice versa) would be more comfortable in the greenhouse. So I put him in the greenhouse. Back he came. And stayed. After a while I got quite used to the fact that as I would check my morning email and online news, he would be there with me surveying the world. Then, last week, as he was climbing around looking like a small gray / green human, I started to wonder about him. So, there I was, working in my studio and my computer was humming had to stop when Tree Frog went across my stopped and turned around and just sat there looking at ,I sat back and looked at him. For five months now he had been riding there with me and I was suddenly overtaken by an urge to know why he was there and not in the greenhouse, where I figured he’d live a happier frog life. “Why are you here,” I found myself asking him. As I looked at him, dead on, his eyes looked directly at me and I heard a tone. The tone seemed to hit me right in the center of my mind. It sounded very nearly like the same one as my computer. In that tone I could hear him “say” to me, “Because I want you to understand.” Yo. That was weird. “Understand what?” my mind jumped in. Then, after a moment of feeling this communication, I felt I understood why he was there. I came to understand that frogs simply want to hear other frogs and to

Unit 1 The Evolving Notion of Home “Home, sweet home” is a phrase that expresses an essential attitude in the United States. Whether the reality of life in the family house is sweet or not so sweet, the ideal of home has great importance for many people. This ideal is a vital part of the American dream. This dream, dramatized in the history of nineteenth-century European settlers of the American West, was to find a piece of land, build a house for one’s family, and start a farm. These small households were portraits of independence: the entire family — mother, father, children, even grandparents — living in a small house and working together to support each other. Everyone understood the life-and-death importance of family cooperation and hard work. Although most people in the United States no longer live on farms, the ideal of home ownership is just as strong in the twentieth century as it was in the nineteenth. When U.S. soldiers came home after World War II, for example, they dreamed of buying houses and starting families. So there was a tremendous boom in home building. The new houses, typically in the suburbs, were often small and nearly identical, but they satisfied a deep need. Many saw the single-family house as the basis of their way of life. For the new suburbanites of the 1950s and 1960s, however, life inside their small houses was very different from life on a farm. First, the family spent much less time together in the house. The father frequently drove, or commuted, as much as an hour to work each morning. The children went to school all day and played after school with neighborhood children. The suburb itself was sometimes called a bedroom community because people used their houses basically for sleeping. Second, the suburb was not a stable community: Families moved frequently as the fathers sought upward mobility — better-paying jobs and bigger houses. Although the idea of home was still as precious as always, it had taken on a different meaning. In the 1970s and 1980s, as more women entered the labor force, the family spent even less time together. But the picture is changing: People can now telecommute, or work at home, while being linked to the office by means of their computers. More and more people can now stay at home. So the old expression could change from

Unit 1 4. Fill each of the blanks with an appropriate word. I found a tree frog in my studio some months ago. I took it to my greenhouse , as I thought it would be a better place for the frog. But it came back and insisted taking the residence in th e studio. Why? I couldn’t get an idea. Then, after five months of being together, we seemed to be able to communicate with each other. It may sound wired , but I did feel I came to understand what it wanted me to do. The frog came to me probably attracted by the humming tone of my computer, which sounded like that of other tree frogs, or with a message to tell me that frogs were dying around the world because of their sensitivity to the pollution and global climate change. As frogs are an“indicator species”, what has happened to them may happen to us, if we sit back and do nothing. We must act now, or it would be too late. 1.The essayist’s language expresses rich and subtle meanings.
