“I was only joking,” I told my 11-year-old son.

“It wasn’t funny,” he said. “You hurt my feelings.” His blue eyes were full of tears.

And then I remembered all the times people had hurt my feelings. For instance, my father always teased me about my lack of cooking abilities.

“Well, look at that,” he’d say. “You didn’t burn the water for the noodles today,” “You’d better find a husband who can cook, or he’ll be hungry all the time,” or “Are you sure that’s safe to eat?”

He was only joking, of course. The strange thing is that my father has never eaten anything I’ve cooked. The one time I prepared a meal for my parents, he chose not to eat it. That hurt too.

Now at 35 years old, I claim to be enlightened in the field of self-development, acceptance and respect. I help others recognize and appreciate their own talents. Yet, here I am, unable to get past the hurtful words my father said to me. Whenever I cook, his words come back to me. I don’t invite people over for dinner because I worry they will leave hungry and laugh at me. The one or two times a year that we do have guests, I start each meal with an apology.

We have all experienced teasing in our lives. Now consider the things you have said to your children, your friends or coworkers. Have you made a lasting impression on them that may hold them back from making their dreams come true? Have you laughed at them about their greatest fears, making it even harder for them to overcome (克服) them?

So next time we are laughing, we should look around and make sure that everyone is enjoying the joke. Words said jokingly might be as dangerous as an incorrectly filled prescription (处方).

Modern Chinese drama, or Huaju, started to develop in the early part of the last century in Shanghai. Different from traditional Chinese operas, it soon won fans for its realistic reflection (反映) of the lives of common people and also for its wide range of works from Western playwrights such as Shakespeare who wrote Hamlet, Moliere and Chekhov. Since then, a number of Chinese playwrights have created works that realistically reflect the changes in the lives of Chinese people before and after the founding of New China. The most memorable include Teahouse, PekingMan, Thunderstorm, Familyand Prairie. Younger playwrights have tried to develop a more modern style, exploring the inner soul of personalities with more modernist works and combining more modern theatrical techniques.

Thunderstorm, written by Cao Yu, features the complex relationships among the members and servants of a large well-off family and shows how the family falls apart as a result of the corruption (腐化) in Old China. A son of a wealthy family, Zhou Puyuan, falls in love with the family maid, Shiping, and then she bears two sons. After he marries a wealthy woman, he keeps the elder son and drives Shiping away with the younger. Shiping marries a butler, Lu Gui, and they have a daughter, Sifeng. An abnormal family history is played out and results in a tragic ending. The play was first put on stage in the 1930s in Chongqing, but was later presented in Beijing in 1954 by the Beijing People’s Art Theater and then sta ged in Shanghai in 1959 by the Shanghai People’s Art Theater. The play has also been adapted into a film with the same name twice, and was performed as a ballet by the Shanghai Ballet Troupe in 1983.

While there are still many people who don’t feel comfortable using a credit card to buy over the Internet, e-commerce is absolutely here to stay. If you take a few precautions, buying over the Internet can actually be safer than using your credit card in a restaurant.

Just as you should notice your surroundings and suspicious-looking people when withdrawing (提取) money from an ATM, you should know how to recognize the warning signs of Internet tricks and take steps to avoid being a victim when shopping online. Here are some good tips to remember when shopping online:

Before submitting your personal information to a site, try to find out how the information may be used and whether it will be sold to or shared with other businesses. If you don’t like what you read, shop somewhere else.

Don’t provide personal information such as address, telephone number, social security number, or email address unless you know who you are providing the information for, why it’s being requested, and how it will be used.

Use a credit card, not a debit card (借记卡) for shopping on the Internet. Debit cards don’t have the same protection as credit cards.

Carefully review your credit card and bank statement each month for unknown charges and inform your credit card company or bank immediately if you notice any charges you didn’t know about.

Clean your computer with free online software that detects spy-ware and install a firewall (防火墙) to ensure the sites you shop on don’t install spy-ware on your computer.

64. While shopping online, you should .

A. be sure nobody is standing beside you

B. only shop on the site that you have often visited

C. find out how the personal information will be used

D. never provide personal information

65. According to the passage, if you find your credit card has unexplained charges, you should .

A. tell your credit card company as soon as possible

B. change your credit card code number immediately

C. check all the websites you have visited

D. use a debit card instead of a credit card

66. The underlined word “precaution” in Paragraph One means something done to .

A. make suspicious-looking people go away

B. protect you against loss or possible dangers

C. remind you to obey the rules when shopping online

D. avoid being cheated when eating in a restaurant

67. What is NOT advised by the writer when shopping online?

A. Using credit cards.

B. Installing a firewall.

C. Visiting famous websites.

D. Being very careful.

68. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?

A. To suggest a new way of shopping.

B. To tell us the advantages of shopping online.

C. To tell us how to shop safely online.

D. To tell us how to avoid being cheated.

Britain’s largest companies are promising to offer greener products and invest in research and technology as part of a wider push to reduce carbon emissions (排放物).

Eighteen of Britain’s top compa nies, including carmakers, airlines, retailers and banks, are publishing a report on Monday, in which they promise to develop new products and services that allow customers to cut their carbon emissions. The report is also intended to send a message to companies around the world to make fighting climate change a higher priority.

“This requires urgent action, and the sooner we do it, the better and the cheaper it will be,” said Ben Verwaayen, chief executive of BT and chairman of the task force group that produced the report. Its members employ two million people worldwide and have more than £1 trillion in income.

The report is a result of British businesses’addressing issues raised by the Stern Review, a study commissioned (委托) by the British government and published last year on the economic impact of global warming. The review, led by the government’s top economist, Nicholas Stern, concluded that spending about one percent of global gross product in reducing emissions today would avoid having to spend about five to twenty percent in the future.

Monday’s report says that the responsibility to cut emission s lies with consumers, who through their purchases contribute to sixty percent of Britain’s emissions, with companies, which can cut emissions by offering greener products, and with the government, which should use tax cuts as a great encouragement for consumers to cut emissions.

Are your kids money-hungry? It may be time to talk to them about money management. While most children know how to spend money, only a few know the virtues (美德) of saving it. April is Financial Youth Literacy Month, which means it is as good a time as any to start talking to kids about money.

Lori Mackey, the “Money Mama”and author of MoneyMamaandtheThreeLittlePigswhich is a read-aloud book that teaches the basics of sound money management, visited “Good Morning America”to explain how to teach kids about saving and spending. Mackey said it’s never too early to start talking to kids about money. “It’s never too late, but if you can start early, you can teach them to give, invest, spend and save wisely, and they learn the habits of wealth,” she said. She advised that all children have some pocket money so they can understand how money works. “They make better choices if they are spending their money, and don’t become materialistic (物质主义的),”Mackey said. “If they want a toy, they have to spend their money. They don’t want to waste their s.” Parents can have children earn money to pay for unnecessary expenses. “Whatever you are spending on your children for things they don’t actually need, allow them to earn it. In this way, it’s not costing you any money. You’re just transferring it,” Mackey said.

Mackey also suggested that parents should follow the following ways when talking to their kids about the value of money.

...

73. What will the next paragraph most probably be about?

Nowadays medical cases which cost too much have drawn people’s attention.

Several days ago, our class held a discussion about the health care reform. After the discussion, we reached the following common agreements. We all think that some related official departments should look into these kinds of cases seriously. Those who break the law should be severely punished. The government should take effective and practical measures to prevent those kinds of things from happening again. The health care reform must pay special attention to the interest of ordinary people. We need a clean medical environment.

In my opinion, the health care reform should focus on ruling out medical corruption and the government should control the price of medical treatment strictly. Only in this way can people enjoy a fair medical environment.

补充完整应该是he just didn’t know how he could get out。37.C。根据后文的to go with him on these trips可知作者的丈夫经常到处出差,travel在这里意为“去往”。40.A。 54.D。根据前文的I don’t know 以及后文的I do know可知是表示转折,需填一个表示转折的连词。59.C。 He was only joking, of course. 可知作者的父亲不是故意伤害她的,可知A正确;根据最后一段的 ... we should look around and make sure that everyone is enjoying the joke. Have you laughed at them about their greatest fears, making it even harder for them to overcome them?

When in Wuhan, be sure to try a bowl of the hot dry noodles. They are truly delicious. History Hot Dry Noodles is a traditional snack in Wuhan with a long history of 50 years. It was said that in early 1930s, there was a person named Libao in Hankou District of Wuhan, who sold Noodles. One day, it was hot and there were a lot of noodles left, he was afraid the noodles became mold and turned worse. So he boiled noodles left, took it out, dried it on the chopping board, But he splashed sesame oil over noodles because of carelessness. A good idea came to his mind that Libao mixed and stirred noodles with sesame oil, then cooled it. How to produce Hot Dry Noodles ?
