Part Three Passages

Passage One

My. Cats and Dogs

When I was a child, I liked walking around the neighborhood. I would leave home and go to the yard which was in front of our house. I used to play with stray cats and dogs. They didn't have owners and were always waiting for me in the street. I trained them. We played games which could be called "teachers and students", "doctors and patients", "sellers and buyers", "robbers and their leader", and so on.

Then my mother forbade me to play with homeless cats and dogs. She was shocked when I came home with "my friends" following me. She shouted at me, and I swore that it would never happen again. However, she found me once again in my room with my dogs playing a game, "the chorus and the orchestra".

The problem was that I didn't want to do anything but play the piano, play with the animals, and hang around the streets. My Mom was in despair. Then my Dad suggested that they buy me a dog and said that they would walk and play with me after their work. For my part, I had to prepare my homework before they came home.

Filled with Memories

I'm filled with childhood memories. I spent my childhood with my grandmother, who had four sons and three daughters. She was very kind and loyal to me. Whatever I wanted to do, she did it. When I was five years old, my grandmother, who was the best grandmother in the world, lived with my family.

At the time, my father had a business, and my mother had to help him. That's why I had to spend all day long with my grandmother. My house, which was located in the middle of the quiet town, was big and had a big garden. I played with my grandmother under a shade tree, counting numbers and singing songs. One time when she went to some place without telling me, I rebuked her. She really spoiled me because I was the youngest in the family. She treated me like a princess who was not well trained.

I have another funny memory of her. She used to smoke cigarettes that she rolled by herself in

a piece of newspaper. When she was not home, I decided to try the same. I rolled a piece of news- paper without tobacco inside. Then I lit that roll and tried to smoke it. It burned quickly all the way up to my nose. I was so embarrassed. Even now, my family talks about that incident.

Passage Three

A Nest of Birds

I grew up on a small farm in the Midwest and had daily contact with a wide variety of living things. One day, I discovered a nest of birds under the rafters of a barn. In order to get a closer lock at the nest, I climbed to the top of the bales of straw. There I found four baby birds with their mouths wide open and their eyes tightly closed. Their pink, featherless bodies moved and stretch in rhythm with yearnings for the food and comfort their parents would bring. I was careful not touch the nest or disturb it in any way, as I was concerned that my interference might affect the safety of the baby birds.,

The next day, Barbara, a neighbor girl, came over to play. I told her I had found something special in the barn. I led the way to the top of the bales and shared with her the magic of the bird in their nest. Barbara's reaction differed dramatically from mine. She called the birds "ugly," and then reached into the nest and picked one of the birds up by its head and threw it down towards the floor of the barn.

The memory of what happened in the barn that day still saddens me. I am sad for the way the birds were treated, but I am also sad for the apparent lack of caring in Barbara's behavior. Passage T wo

I Miss Riding Water Buffaloes.

What I miss most from my childhood is riding water buffaloes. Because V ietnam was a very poor country, farmers didn't have machines to do all the heavy jobs required in the field. They had to use water buffaloes to do that work, and that's why all the farmers in Vietnam had their own family water buffalo. Each family let their children take responsibility for the water buffalo.

Everyday, the children brought the water buffalo to the field to eat grass, and the children got together and played games. Around five o'clock in the afternoon, just before going home, children brought the water buffalo into a pond to take a bath. The first important thing to do was to wash the buffalo's body with clean water.

After the buffalo was washed, the children liked to stand on its body and play a kind of game. This game involved throwing a ball to another playmate while standing on the buffalo's back. The children yelled at the water buffalo in order to get the buffalo to move during the game.

This whole experience with the water buffalo is one of my fondest childhood memories. Even though I am now grown up and am a married woman, I still really miss being in the Vietnarnese countryside and playing games with my friends on the water buffalo.

Listen to the passage and answer the following questions.

Passage Three

Looking at Life Through the Eyes of Children

When we were children, everything we saw was new, wonderful, exciting, and unbelievable. We were happy whether it was raining or snowing, hot or cold, and night or day. What we just wanted to discover was all the things around us.

For us the only big difference was that we were awake or asleep. When we were awake, we wanted to extend the time just for playing with our friends or being with our pet a little more time. But we can't stop time. Children grow up and we become adults; and as adults, we no longer have enough time for little things--discovering a rainbow is not surprising, seeing a 50-storeyed building is not amazing, and looking at a giraffe in the zoo is normal. A rainy day is a bad day because the traffic will be slow, and the first day of spring makes us think about allergies.

The first day of the month is not the beginning of a new month; it's the time to think about bills. Going to the supermarket is an obligation; it is not just for the pleasure of walking down the aisles, looking for things and seeing the people around us.

Life is a process in which everyone has many obligations, but if everyone tries to see life through the eyes of a child, I am sure that every day could be better.

Listen to the passage and complete the following sentences with the information you hear.

1. Children are interested in all the things around them.

2. According to the passage, the sentence We were awake or asleep means that children want to

play all day long.

III. A Story for Retelling

Here is a funny story. Listen and retell it.

A House in One Village

A newly married couple rented a house from a priest in a village. Then they shifted in, to their surprise, they found no sign of a WC (toilet). So they wrote to the priest enquiring the where-about of the WC. On receiving the letter, the priest, being ignorant of the term WC, thought it to be Wealey Church. Imagine the couple's surprise when they received the following reply from priest:

Dear Sir & Madam,

This is to inform you that the nearest WC is 7 miles from your place. Every Sunday, many people go there. Some go there by train, others by bus, while the rest walked, just to reach there in time. The last time my wife went there was 10 years ago. I myself never go, preferring to c onduct my little service in the open field with people around me. That WC can accommodate 100 people and the Committee has decided to make cushion seats for the comfort of the people. The children assemble themselves and sing throughout the session. Y ou need to be there early, otherwise you may have to stand during the service.

Unit1 how can we become good learners How I Learned to Learn English Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke too quickly. But I was afraid to ask questions because my pronunciation was very bad. So I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything. Then one day I watched an English movie called Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie! So then I began to watch other English movies as I could not understand everything the characters said, their body language and the expressions on their faces helped me to get the meaning. I also realized I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. My pronunciation also improved by listening to the interesting conversations in English movies. I discovered that listening to something you are interested in is the secret to language learning. I also learned useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake” or “It serves you right.” I did not understand these sentences at first. But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked up the words in a dictionary. Now I really enjoy my English class. I want to learn new words and more grammar. Then I

新外研版英语九年级上课文

Module 1 When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a path. In the east, the sky was becoming light. I knew it was there, but there was nothing to see. After about a mile, a stranger appeared in front of me. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,”he replied. “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it. Suddenly, the clouds cleared and the rain stopped. The sun rose behind me and beyond the rocks. I saw that the ground fell away and down to a river, far below me. I was looking across the Grand Canyon, one of the wonders of the natural world. I looked down to the Colorado River, from here a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of the each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still wouldn’t reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. How far is it? It’s about fifteen miles, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away, about 277 miles long. The Grand Canyon is not just big. It’s huge! I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder anywhere in the natural world?”I certainly know the answer. But what do you think? Module 2 Thanksgiving is an American festival. People give thanks for their food. It’s celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and it’s a time for a special dinner among family and friends. We’ve celebrated the festival since the first pioneers from England arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they landed, their first winter was worse than any English winter. The local people, the Native Americans, taught the pioneers how to grow corn, catch fish and keep cows, sheep and hens. The following year they celebrated together by eating a dinner of the new food. We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. The kitchen is the most crowded room in our house because we all help to prepare the food there. We lay the table, then before we begin dinner, my father gives praise for the food, so we remember where the festival comes from. We usually eat too much, but it’s only once a year! We often listen to speeches and tell stories after dinner as well. When it’s all over everyone helps wash the dishes. The festival is a very busy time for travel when friends and families come together to celebrate. After we finish the Thanksgiving Day festival, there are plenty of other things to see and do. We live in New York City, and we go to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, along with thousands of people as it goes along several streets and finishes at the famous Macy’s Store. Thanksgiving is also the start of the Christmas season, and we start shopping for presents. Football is also important at Thanksgiving, with many teams playing games. Like many Americans, we usually watch the games on television and enjoy ourselves very much.

On the first day (Voice-over: Harrison meets Jenny before the first class.) Harrison: I'm Harrison. Good to meet you. Jenny: Good to meet you. I'm Jenny. Harrison: So, you've bought the books for this biology class. Jenny: Yeah. I think everyone had to before class started. Harrison: No. Usually no one does much on the first day because it's still add-drop. Jenny: What's that? Harrison: Changing from class to class to find out which is best. Jenny: Have you had this teacher before? I've heard he is really good. Harrison: He's good if you're a hard worker. He expects a lot. Jenny: Oh, I guess that's good. I hope I can keep up with everyone else in the class. Maybe I need your help after class. Harrison: You're welcome. (Voice-over: Jenny catches up with Harrison after the first class.) Jenny: Harrison, wait up! Harrison: So what do you think of the professor's lecture? Jenny: I think about half of what he said went over my head. Harrison: Don't worry. A lot of what he said is explained in the reading. Jenny: Hey, would you mind if I borrowed your notes tonight to look them over? Harrison: No problem. We don't have class until Wednesday. Here you go. Jenny: Thanks. I just want to make sure I'm prepared for the seminar. Harrison: Yeah. Participation in the discussion is an important part of the education here. How to select elective courses? Consider these tips on elective courses and you'll choose those that will serve you best. To begin with, you should select the courses that fit your profession. It is a good idea to choose elective courses closely related to your chosen profession. Potential employers will appreciate every bit of extra training and knowledge that they don't have to give you. For example, you may select elective courses in chemistry, biology or even physics if you are doing a science major. For business majors, select electives in accounting, business administration, and even computing, as you'll never know when these will come in handy in the corporate world. Moreover, you can choose an education that includes many fields of study. If you are taking a heavy load of career-related courses, you may prefer electives that are not directly related to your major. If you receive a well-rounded education, some employers believe that you have better potential. For example, if you have courses in science along with your business degree, you could possibly win a job over someone who majored purely in business with no outside electives. Finally, you can also select a challenging elective course. Part of getting an education is learning how to learn, and elective courses should help you achieve this goal. You need not to memorize all the information from each class, but you should get a better understanding of the world. So, pick elective courses that challenge your belief system and make you look at the world in a different way. For instance, you can consider a philosophy elective if you have been told that you are a little narrow-minded.
