Jeans have become one of the most worn pieces of clothing in the world. Everybody wears them, from the rural farmer to the urban lawyer and from models to housewives.

But why have jeans become so popular. You'll get many answers. For some people they look cool, for others jeans are simply comfortable.
Jeans were first designed as trousers for farm workers and miners in the states of the American west. A Nevada tailor, Jacob Davis, had the idea of using copper bolts(铜制铆钉) at the corner of the pockets to make them stronger. They became popular at once and soon many people bought them.
At first jeans were worn only by workers, especially in factories. In the east of the US jeans were hardly worn at all. But when rich easterners went on holidays to escape everyday life they often put on jeans.
James Dean and Marlon Brando made them popular in movies and everyone wanted to wear them. The new trousers were once not allowed to wear in American schools and sometimes in theatres and cinemas. But as time goes on jeans have become more acceptable and today they are worn not only as ordinary clothes but also at formal events.
Other countries quickly started to get used to wearing jeans too. Americans in Europe and Japan often wore them when they were not on duty to show that they were Americans. The trousers showed the world a happier way of life, something that people needed. Today jeans are an important part of our lives.

I have to be honest; celebrating a calendar holiday is not what our family does best. We sometimes cook the Thanksgiving Turkey a day later or earlier, and put the Christmas tree up before Halloween just for fun. We truly believe in living a life to the fullest and celebrating life every day. Typically I don't want to create pressure for anyone in the family for making a certain holiday a perfect one. Sometimes we even don't celebrate all of the holidays.
We enjoy last minute surprises and there's nothing more fun than making breakfast for dinner or cooking birthday cakes on halfbirthdays. I believe in celebrating love beyond Valentine's Day and many calendar holidays. Life in general brings too much pressure to moms, and in the case of Mother's Day, pressure for the husbands makes it a perfect one.
Considering the abundance of time together, we typically celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day at our home almost every Sunday. Now it has become a custom that our kids cook a big brunch (早中餐) for us on Sundays, or we go out for a big brunch to celebrate t

he holiday. We eat dinner at home, everyone around the dinner table every day, but the Sundays become our special days.
The kids tend to get upset if we are not having a big brunch on Sundays. My daughter has become a master at making crepes (薄烤饼), and last weekends the kids made the best banana bread I have ever had. I enjoy the “Mother's Days” when I don't have to cook, and when kids are so proud that they are making something for me to enjoy.
28.The author's family don't celebrate calendar holidays especially because .
A.they want to enjoy life as much as possible
B.there are too many festivals to be remembered
C.it's always too noisy on calendar festivals
D.they are too busy to celebrate them in time
29.They usually celebrate Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day on Sundays because .
A.it is a custom of their nation B.they have more time to get together
C.no one cooks on weekdays D.most holidays fall on Sundays
30.According to the author, celebrating a calendar holiday .
A.creates a happy atmosphere in families
B.costs too much money
C.can cause pressure on family members
D.is more meaningful than celebration itself
31.Which of the following can best describe the author's lifestyle?
A.Strange and traditional.B.Serious and regular.
C.Busy and Colorful.D.Free and easy.

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to grow as people, and to develop their own interests in many subjects. Open education allows students to be responsible for their own education, as they are responsible for what they do in life. Some students do badly in a traditional classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules. For students who worry about these things a lot, it is a good idea to be in an open classroom.
But many students will not do well in an open classroom. For some students, there are too few rules. These students will do little in school. They will not make good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem getting used to making so many choices. For many students it is important to have same rules in the classroom. They worry about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of students. The last point about open education is that some traditional teachers do not like it. Many teachers do not believe in open education. Teachers who want to have an open classroom may have many problems at their schools.
You now know what open education is. Some of its good points and bad points have been explained. You may have your own opinion about open education. The writer thinks that open education is a good idea, but only in theory. In actual fact, it may not work very well in a real class or school. The writer believes that most students, but o

f course not all students, want some structure in their classes. They want and need to have rules. In some cases, they must be made to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to find subjects they have to study interesting. They would not study those subjects if they did not have to.
32.Some students will do little in an open classroom because .
A.they hate activitiesB.there are too few rules
C.they worry about the rulesD.open education is meaningless
33.Open education may be a good idea for those who .
A.worry about gradesB.enjoy traditional learning
C.want to do what they like toD.do well in a traditional classroom
34.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Some traditional teachers do not like it.
B.Many teachers do not believe in open education.
C.Teachers may have problems in open classrooms.
D.Teachers' feelings and attitudes are important to students.
35.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Open education is a really complex idea.
B.The writer thinks open education is practical.
C.Open education is better than traditional education.
D.Traditional teachers don't believe in open education.

The Four People Who Determine Your Success
Anyone who has accomplished anything of significance didn't do it alone. Neither should you. Think about the four people you spend the most time with and answer this blindingly simple yet imperative question: Do they make you better? If they don't, the question then becomes: 36
These are the people with a unique set of skills who encourage you and push you to be the absolute best version of yourself.
Point Guard(后卫): The point guard is the floor general. They see the big picture and support you in managing the flow of information. They're good at knowing when you can speed things up or slow things down. 37
Shooting Guard: 38 They are in the middle of making great things happen in their life and when you need creativity or a push, they are your person. They remind you that if you miss a shot, just keep shooting.
Small Forward(前锋): The role player is one of the most underestimated players on a team. They do the work that many don't see and they don't regularly show up in the postgame statistics. But when they're around, you always seem to be at your best.
Power Forward: 39 Their genius is holding you accountable to what you said you were going to do. They measure success by the progress you do or don't make.
Spending time with top performers isn't always easy. Why? 40 They're going to make you do what you say. Your starting four aren't always going to be your best friends. But they play a key role in determining your success.
A.Center—the Rock.
B.They light the scoreboard up.
C.Who is it that makes you better?
D.How do the people make you better?
E.In short, they ca

n see things that you can't.
F.Because they're going to push your buttons.
G.As much as you love them, you may equally hate them.

Many of us are afraid of failing. . Kids are especially likely to fear to fail and look 41. Because of this, trying new things can be a huge problem for children.
One day, when Hannah, a 10yearold fifthgrader, came home, she was in 42. She told her parents that all of the students were 43 to play a sport. Her mother told her,“We're thinkers, not 44, and girls are not supposed to play sports.” Hannah thought of herself as totally uncoordinated(不协调的)She fell in the jump rope and had never even been able to 45 a twowheeler. “Now everyone will see what a(n) 46 I am,” she cried.

At the first practice on Monday, Hannah was standing on the 55 when the assistant coach yelled,“Hannah, I can see that you're thinking about what you should do. Good 56!” Hannah was shocked. Two days later, she began running after a ball and trying to kick it, but she missed it 57. The coach should pat her gently on the shoulder, saying,“Good girl. Keep it 58.”
By the end of the season, Hannah didn't become a star soccer player and her team didn't win the regional matches. However, what Hannah gained was far more valuable than a(n) 59. She gained a sense of pride. She learned she could be part of a team and attempt new things without 60.

W: Excuse me, Professor Carson, but I was hoping to talk to you about my class project.
M: I have a class in a few minutes. Why don't you come and see me during office hours tomorrow?
(Text 2)
W: These tomatoes are huge! You must have watered them a lot.
M: Yes, I did. They ought to be ripe enough to pick by next Friday when we have our picnic.
(Text 3)
M: How does your sister go to university every day? Does she take a bus or underground or maybe the train?
W: Oh, she always walksbecause she lives quite close.
(Text 4)
M: How was the weather for your hiking trip last Satur day?
W: It rained a little in the morning, but got sunny in the afternoon.
M: Did you have a lot of fun?
W: Sure.
(Text 5)
M: Lily, do you have the time?
W: Oh, my watch stopped again. And I just got a new battery.
M: Why don't you take it to the clock shop? They can check it for you, and the price is pretty reasonable.
(Text 6)
W: Why didn't you come to the cinema last night? I waited for you for a long time.
M: I'm sorry, but I had something more important to do yesterday evening, so I wasn't able to come.
W: But why not tell me?
M: I did. I called you many times, but you had your mobile phone power off.
W: Oh, I didn't bring it with me because I left it recharging at home.
M: I'm really sorry to have missed the film.
(Text 7)
W: Why is it so hot these days?

M: I'm afraid so. It will hit our city on its way towards the mainland.
W: When will it arrive?
M: It is expected to arrive here tomorrow evening.
W: So we must be prepared for it.
M: Yes. The government has warned the fishermen not to go fishing too far out to sea, and told all citizens not to stay out when the typhoon arrives. I'm afraid it will cause a serious damage. We'll have to be careful.
(Text 8)
W: Shall I phone and tell your secretary you're not coming today?

W: But you're not in bed! Do you want me to tell a lie?
M: Oh, it's only a very little one, dear. I'm not making a false excuse. I really have a bad headache.

M: V

W: Look, here's some boiling water. Do as I tell you now. I've put something in the water that'll do you a lot of good. Put your nose over the water. That's right. Breathe in deeply. It'll do you a lot of good.

(Text 10)
Skyscrapers have become very common in Europe. Cities such as Frankfort, Madrid, Valencia, Malmo and Paris, all have very tall buildings under construction. However, the center of the world for skyscrapers is neither Europe nor America. The tallest buildings in the world are being built in Asia and the Middle East. At more than 500 meters tall, the tallest building in the world is Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan. However, when completed in 2008, the Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates will rise 162 stories and more than 800 meters. Another building in Dubai is planned to be over 1, 200meters tall. That's about three times as tall as the Empire State Building. Skyscrapers are part of our future for many reasons. For one, they require less land to build and use less electricity and other resources. Plus, people who live in cities with highrises are less likely to own a car. In New York and London, for example, the majority of residents do not drive. Still, a lot of people think that really tall buildings ruin the look of a city. What do you think?

由文章第二段中的第二、三两句话“For some students, there are too few rules. These students will do little in school.”
由文章第一段中的第七句话“They will not have to worry about grades or rules.”

42.D由下一句的all of the students were 43 to play a sport以及第20空前的totally uncoordinated(不协调的)判断, 由于是Hannah在运动方面不擅长, 所以当学校要求(required)所有学生都要参与一项运动时, 她很惊慌(panic)。
49.B与本空后的may never have seen a soccer ball构成对比:你们当中有些人是有经验的(experienced)球员, 而有些人可能从来都没有见过足球。
51.B由本空后的a member of this team

52.A由上句的keep working hard. . . to develop your skills和下句的You will surprise yourselves可知, 球员的水平会越来越高(better)。
54.D与本空后的I can't并列:那两句话就是“我放弃(give up)”和“我办不到”。
做得好(good job)!”

I often quarrel aboutwith my mother over whether I can watch TV after school. She holds∧the view that senior three students have to make fullyfull use of every minute to work hard at their lessons. It seems to meher that once I am allowed to do that, I'll ∧be unable to control myself and forget all about my study. She also thinks it is bad for my eyeeyes.
AndBut I really can't accept her ideas. In my opinion, watchwatching TV can set my mind at rest after a day's hard work.Besides, it is important for us to know what hadhas happened at home and at abroad. Thus, we shouldn't be forbidden to watch TV.
