Fashion

Task One: Splendid Hua Fu, Splendid China

“NE Tiger”, the first Chinese luxury brand launched its Hua Fu series in Shanghai early last month. “The Splendid Chinese colors, the Splendid Hua Fu” the styles embody the spirit of renaissance in China. And the entire fashion industry is impressed.

The Hua Fu series seems a perfect reflection of modern China. The collection, elegant with highlights of luxury, dazzled audiences with its individual styles, supported by unique leading concepts.

Refined materials for the haute couture collection are special mainly “Yun Jin” or Yun Brocade which has a history of around 1500 years. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Two skilled craftsmen can accomplish only five centimeters of cloth a day by hand. There’s a saying in China “An inch of Yun Brocade, an inch of gold”.

“Xiu” is a traditional Chinese weaving technique employed in four types of embroidery: Su, Yue, Xiang, and Shu. Gowns woven in these styles normally take months to finish.

While employing traditional Chinese weaving techniques, NE.Tiger also promotes traditional Chinese colors. Yellow, black, blue, green, and red dominated the runway, rendered in an appealingly harmonious way.

The Hua Fu series is a perfect combination of fashion elements drawn from over fifty minority groups around the country the Zang, Miao, Dai and Yi.

One may find strings of symbolic patterns or ornaments inspired by traditional Chinese culture throughout the show. Some elements offered a retrospective look at the lives of royalfamilies of the past. And the fashion of the past, enriched by visionary creation and excellent design, is understood and appreciated by people today.

Luxurious fur and colorful Hua Fu complemented one another perfectly. Splendid brocade, crystal and the legendary four embroideries created an array of elegance and beauty on the runway. Models strode the ramp with an air connotative of the nobility and style of the NE.Tiger brand.

His Royal Highness Joachim, Prince of Denmark, showed up at the event and enjoyed the Hua Fu show. Influenced by his father Henglike Infante who can even speak Chinese himself, Prince Joachim is especially enthusiastic about China and Chinese culture. The designer presented

him on stage a Hua Fu, a limited edition. T here’s only one like it―made specially for the Danish royal family.

Task Two: Trendy T-Shirts Inspired by Beijing’s Hutongs

Another approach to preserving the past as T-shirts decorated with images typical of Beijing

are gaining popularity in the Chinese c apital. Beijing’s hutongs have inspired a new type of “pop art” as Englishman Dominic Johnson-Hill transfers everyday images onto T-shirts.

2

Dominic Johnson-Hill makes his home in Beijing’s urban alleyways, known as hutongs. He came here fifteen years ago as a backpacker and never left.

The hutong he lives in is called Nan Luo Gu Xiang. It is one of the oldest in the city with nearly 800-years of history. It has been marked for cultural heritage preservation. For Dominic, the hutong is the soul of Beijing, and he loves its old neighborhood feel.

(Dominic Johnson-Hill)

“So I like to stay in the hutongs and around where I live. It’s pretty much I live in a small village within the city. You get to know all your neighbours very well. It’s very quiet, and it’s a pretty interesting place. It’s a bit like living in a museum.”

Two years ago, his love for the city inspired him to start an original T-shirt brand called “Plastered”.The garments are adorned with retro designs typical of everyday life in Beijing. They are instantly recognizable to people familiar with the city in the 1990s.

The designs, as modelled by Dominic himself, can be mundane like a train or taxi ticket or an homage to typical Chinese advertising posters. Dominic says the success of his brand comes from its originality.

(Dominic Johnson-Hill)

“The young eighteen and twenty -year-old Chinese are all looking for their own identity. They don’t want to be buying the Guccis and Prad as anymore. They want something that represents them and represents their own city. Something like this is home-grown. It was grown in Beijing and it came from Beijing.”

With the 2008 Olympics taking place later this year, Dominic has designed an Olympic inspired collection. He says that since he has been resident in Beijing for fifteen years now, he intends to stay in the city so long as his quality of life remains good, saying he is not to plan out his life. Task Three: Japanese Space Fashion Show Lifts Off

Outer space has provided the inspiration for a fashion show in Yokohama, Japan. Designers came up with ten outfits they say are just perfect for the zero gravity fashionista.

In practical space suits, frilly dresses and kimonos, young Japanese designers showcased their tailoring skills and imagination.

For many, the emphasis was on practicality. One used a plastic ball between body joints to smooth the body movement in cramped and zero-gravity travel compartments.

(Chihiro Yoshikawa, University Student)

“I really enjoyed the show. Unlike the usual fashion shows, it was refreshi ng in a way to see the designers incorporate a flexible element to the clothes.”

Others implemented a narrow tube inside a baggy suit, which can be used to inflate one’s own suit for moving around the spaceship.

Half of the designers focused on the garment function, and the rest decided to stick to their fashion roots —incorporating street fashion into the cosmonaut look.

Some designers went even further, creating a “kimono” and a frilly wedding dress, just the thing for a cosmic marriage.

Show organizer Misuzu Onuki predicts the fashion element will be more and more important as space travel comes within reach of the masses.

3 (Misuzu Onuki, Organizer of Japan Fashion Show)

“Soon we’ll face an age where ordinary people pay money to go on space travel and we ar e going to want to dress up as we do now when we go on trips.”

Onuki says the show was part of Japan’s first space fashion contest.

The winning designer will have a chance to design an actual space suit. It will be worn by one of the first public space travelers who will go on a trip through an American space travel agency.

New Vision at London Fashion Week

“Being skinny” and “back in shape” are hot topics among women aspiring to beauty and fashion. But model thin is not always in . Let’s take a look at a new trend at the ongoing LondonFashion Week.

Hot on the heels of 2010 New York fashion week comes London’s turn on the catwalk.Designers, super models, and fashion buyers gather from across the world.

Under eyeliner and flashing lights, the taste of beauty has been expanding. Designers aredirecting to a much healthier approach, with more “curves and smiles” on the Fashion Week runways.

(Bora Aksu, designer)

“The past couple of seasons has said that the girls coming to casting look m uch more healthier and happier somehow. So I could say that…”

Since the sudden deaths of several extremely skinny models in 2007, the London fashion committee has attempted to establish a healthier beauty image and change “the thinner the prettier” preconc eption.

The blind pursue of skinny is changing among models.

(Naomi Campbell, super model)

“I think the bigger the better.”

Some famous British department stores are displaying more proportional mannequins. And some agents are specializing in models with curves to encourage a healthier life style among young females.

因此在听多位数的数字时,应对billion(十亿)、million(百万)、thousand(千)、hundred(百)等词尤为重视。同时,要注意一个数字的多种读法,如播音员把两个足球队比赛结果2:0读作two to nothing而不是读成two to nought或two to zero.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE TRAFFIC IN GUANZHOU? IN MY OPINION,AT FIRST, THEN, LAST. 老师问了3次,CAN YOU START? THIS IS THE END OF THIS EXAM.

A.倒金字塔结构(the Inverted Pyramid Form) 也称倒叙法。 听新闻要抓住6要素,即who,what,why,when,where,how,一般情况下导语 中应当回答这6要素的2要素。 Eg. American Coast Guard officials in Florida say they have returned to Cuba a group of would-be migrants B.含定语从句的复合句 此类句型通常结构复杂,信息量大,是新闻听力的难点。 Eg: they had to remain at the abandoned base where there were only flour and cooking fat.

Unit 1 Happiness Part 1 Teacher: Hi, good morning. Did you hear about the lottery winner last night The man won…what?… Two million dollars… Student: No, three. Teacher: Three million dollars? Three million. That's a lot of money isn't it Do you think that three million dollars would make you happy? … I'm asking you this because when you ask people what they need to be happy, many people will answer" more money!" We assume that money will make us happier. But is this true Will winning the lottery help you achieve happiness? Today we're going to look at the idea of happiness, at the psychology of happiness--what makes some people happier than others. We'll look at three personality factors that we find in happy people. To find out about these personality factors, psychologists talked to hundreds of people. Now, first, they asked the people how happy they felt--you know, from "very happy" to "not happy at all." Then they asked some more questions, They wanted to find out about people's personalities, such as their attitudes about life, and so on. They looked at the differences between happy people and unhappy people. They found three factors that are very important for achieving happiness. So…let's look at those factor s now. The first personality factor is that happy people are…satisfied with themselves. This means that they like themselves as they are, and they’re happy with what they have. Happy people may not like everything about their lives-they may be a little bit overweight, or may not have the best job, or may not live in a big, fancy house, but they don't need to change those things to be happy. They think more about the things they are satisfied with, not the changes they want to make. This feeling of happiness comes from the inside, not from something outside. Part 2 Teacher: So…happy people feel satisfied with themselves. On the other hand, unhappy people are often dissatisfied with themselves. They...uh...feel that something must change so they can be happy. They think if they lose some weight or
