Modern zoos are very different from zoos that were built fifty years . At that time, zoos were placespeople could go to see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages that were made concrete with iron bars, cages that were easy to keep clean. for the animals, the cages were small and impossible to hide in. The zoo environment was natural. the zoo keepers took good care of the animals and fed them well, many of the animals did not thrive; they behaved in strange ways, and they often became ill. In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural habitats. The animals are given more in large areas so that they can live more as they would in nature. Even the appearance of zoos has changed. (三) 阅读理解

When I was about 12, I suddenly began to like writing poetry. I gave up all my other hobbies, such as collecting stamps, reading novels, playing football, etc, and spent all my spare time reading poetry and writing it. This habit of writing poetry on every possible occasion(场合) soon got me into trouble at school. If a lesson did not interest me, I would take out my notebook and start writing poems in class. Of course I did this very carefully, but it was not long before I got caught. One day while I was busy writing a poem during a geography lesson, I looked up to find the teacher standing over me. He looked rather angry because I was not paying attention. He tore my poem up, and warned me not to waste time in his lesson. All the same I believed that I had written a good poem, so that evening I wrote it out again from memory. Not long after, I read about a poetry contest(比赛) and I decided to send in my poem. Weeks later, long after I had given up hope, I got a letter telling me I had won the first prize. Everyone at school was very impressed --- except the geography teacher. He watched me more carefully than ever. He was quite sure that I was not going to write poetry in his lesson!

What was the hobby that the author picked up when he was 12 years old?

What did the author think of the poem that was torn up by the teacher?

(A) He thought it was a good poem (B) He thought it was his best poem (C) He didn't give it much thought (D) He didn't like it at all

Which of the following is true about the poem that the author wrote in the geography class? (A) It made the author lose hope about poetry writing. (B) It brought the author the honor of a first-class prize in a poetry competition. (C) It made the geography teacher feel sorry for his tearing it up. (D) It brought the author the freedom of writing poetry in geography classes.

This is at least partly due to what is known as language interference, meaning that the linguistic patterns of our first language interfere with those of the second because no two languages have exactly the same sounds and grammatical structures. The English language has a very large vocabulary because it has incorporated words from many other languages over the centuries. This is nowhere more apparent than in its color words. For example, there are many words that express the color “purple”, describing its different shades and hues: mauve, violet, lilac, or lavender. An interesting 2

大学英语精读第二册Reading Aloud and Memorizing答案

The American does not join in the argument but watches the other guests. As he looks, he sees a strange expression come over the face of the hostess. She is s taring straight ahead, her muscles contracting slightly. She motions to the nat ive boy standing behind her chair and whispers something to him. The boy's eyes widen: he quickly leaves the room. Of the guests, none except the American notices this or sees the boy place a bo wl of milk on the veranda just outside the open doors. The American comes to with a start. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thi ng -- bait for a snake. He realizes there must be a cobra in the room. Unit2 Jefferson's courage and idealism were based on knowledge. He probably knew more than any other man of his age. He was an expert in agriculture, archeology, an d medicine. He practiced crop rotation and soil conservation a century before t hese became standard practice, and he invented a plow superior to any other in existence. He influenced architecture throughout America, and he was constantly producing devices for making the tasks of ordinary life easier to perform. Of all Jefferson's many talents, one is central. He was above all a good and ti reless writer. His complete works, now being published for the first time, will fill more than fifty volumes. His talent as an author was soon discovered, and when the time came to write the Declaration of Independence at Philadelphia in 1776, the task of writing it was his. Millions have thrilled to his words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…" Unit3 While I was waiting to enter university, I saw advertised in a local newspaper a teaching post at a school in a suburb of London about ten miles from where I lived. Being very short money and wanting to do something useful, I applied, fe aring as I did so, that without a degree and with no experience in teaching my chances of getting the job were slim. However, three days later a letter arrived, asking me to go to Croydon for an i nterview. It proved an awkward journey: a train to Croydon station; a ten-minut e bus ride and then a walk of at least a quarter to feel nervous. Unit 4 As a boy and then as an adult,I never lost my wonder at the personality that was Einstein .He was the only person i knew who had come to terms with himself and the world around him .He knew what he wanted and he wanted only this :to understand within his limits as a human being the nature of the universe and the logic and simplicity in its functioning .He knew there were answers beyond his intellectual reach .but this did not frustrate him .He was content to go as far as he could.
