When Jamie Beondik saw a puppy getting beaten with a chain, he tried to help. What he got in return was a beating of his own and he had to go to hospital.

The neighbors saw the four-month-old black dog named Tomba Wednesday morning being beaten, choked and dragged on a chain by a man on a bike.

Jamie decided to get involved, telling the man to stop hurting Tomba.

“He started swinging the chain around in the air and I said ‘OK. Well, I’m going to call the police.’ And that’s when he hit me with the chain,” said Jamie.

He got hit in the legs and then the man and the dog ran off.

Twenty minutes later, the man came back and attacked Jamie with a slingshot (弹弓) before throwing a rock at him, hitting him in the back.

Jamie now has to use the wall to steady himself and his hands won’t stop shaking, but he expects to be OK.

Despite his injuries, he has no regrets. Jamie says he’d do it all again.

“He was hurting the dog. I have had a dog for 13 years that looked just like Tomba. The dog was crying for help. I just wanted him to let the dog go. I didn’t think he’d beat me,” said Jamie.

Cancer is among the top killer diseases in our society today and scientists have found out that stress helps to bring it on. We need to consider, therefore, what are the causes of stress in our life, and whether we can do anything about them.

Are we under-employed, or overburdened with too many responsibilities? Do we have a right balance of work and leisure in our lives? Are our relationships with family, friends or fellow workers all that they should be?

All these things can be a cause of stress, and it is best to face them directly, and to bring our frustrations into the open. People who have a good row and then forget it are doing their health more good than those who bottle up their feelings.

If our self-examination has brought any causes of stress to light, let us consider what we can do about them. It is possible to change jobs. We can make more leisure and fill it more happily, if we will accept a different living standard. We can improve our personal relationships by a different attitude. It is we who allow other people to make ourselves unhappy. Often the little things that disturb us are not worth an hour’s anger. The teaching in the Bible “Let not the sun go down upon your wrath (愤怒)” is good advice from the health point of view as well as religion.

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you, but I am short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?

Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telli ng a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it’s terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more li kely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise that they have no intention of carrying out. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.

Research has been done into t he way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face, particularly the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (痒).

Another gesture that gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man Watching calls the “mouth cover”. He says that there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side off the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself from lying.

Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, moving about in a chair can not be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to happen more often in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context which the lie is told.

72. According to the passage, a white lie seems to be a lie ______.

A. that other people believe

B. that other people don’t believe

C. told in order not to hurt someone’s feelings

D. told in order to take advantage of someone

73. Research suggests that women _____.

A. are better at telling less serious lies than men

B. generally lie for more than men do

C. often make promises they intend to break

D. lie at parties more often than men do

74. Researchers find that when a person tells lies _____.

A. his blood pressure increases greatly

B. he looks very serious

C. he is likely to make some small changes in his behavior

D. he uses his unconscious mind

75. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage as a sign of lying?

A. Touching one’s ears

B. Rubbing the nose

C. Moving in a chair

D. Covering the mouth

A wolf was almost dead with hunger. A housedog saw him, and asked, “Friend, your irregular life will soon ruin you. Why don’t you work steadily as I do, and get your food regularly?”“I would have no objection,” said the wolf, “if I could only get a place.” “I will help you,” said the dog. “Come with me to my master, and you shall share my work.” So the wolf and the dog went to the town together. On the way the wolf saw that there was no hair around the dog’s neck. He felt quite surprised, and asked him why it was like that? “Oh, it is nothing,” said the dog. “Every night my master puts a collar (颈圈) around my neck and chains me up. You will soon get used to it.”“Is that the only reason?”said the wolf. “Then good-bye to you, my friend. I would rather be free.”

B

Two men were traveling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and hid himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear came up and felt him with his snout (鼻子), and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and pretended the appearance of death as much as he could. The bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other traveler got down from the tree, and inquired of his friend what it was the bear had whispered in his ear. “He gave me this advice,” his companion replied.“Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger.”

C

A prince had some monkeys trained to dance. Being naturally good at learning, they showed themselves excellent pupils, and in their rich clothes and masks, they danced as well as any of the courtiers (朝臣). Their performance was often repeated with great applause, till on one occasion, a courtier, bent on mischief, took from his pocket a handful of nuts and threw them upon the stage. The monkeys at the sight of the nuts forgot their dancing and became (as indeed they were) monkeys instead of actors. Pulling off their masks and tearing their robes, they fought with one another for the nuts. The dancing spectacle thus came to an end in the laughter and ridicule of the audience.

D

A cock was once strutting (大步走) up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he noticed something shining in the straw. “Ho! ho!” said he, “that’s for me,” and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. It turned out to be a pearl that by some chance had been lost in the yard. “You may be a treasure,” signed the cock, “to man, but for me I would rather have a single barley-corn (大麦粒).”

E

Lion was awakened from sleep by a mouse running over his face. Rising up in anger, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the mouse piteously (可怜巴巴的) asked, saying: “If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness.” The lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The mouse, recognizing his roar, came up, and gnawed the rope with his teeth, and setting him free, exclaimed: “You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you, not expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor; but now you know that it is possible for even a mouse to confer benefits on a lion.”

F

An old man on the point of death gathered his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a bunch of sticks, and said to his eldest son: “Break it.” The son tried hard, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful. “Untie it,” said the father, “and each of you take a stick.” When they had done so, he called out to them: “Now, break,” and each stick was easily broken.
