1.阅读理解

Many of you have watched a Superman cartoon or movie. But did you know he first appeared in comics(连环漫画)? Do you want to learn more about popular comic books around the world? Take a look!

Do you find reading boring? Have a read of some comic books. You will learn to love their colorful pictures and simple language.

Comic books usually tell stories through cartoons. The US and Japan have some great comic books. But they are not the same.

Their names are different. People say "comic books" in the US but "manga" in Japan.

American comics are often about superheroes—characters like Superman and Spider Man. So action is a major part of American comics. But Japanese manga like to tell stories of ordinary people. Luffy in One Piece(《海盗王》)is such an example.

American comics make people excited with super powers, while Japanese manga comfort(安慰)people with moving stories. Natsume's Book of Friends is about a teenage boy. He can see spirits(精灵). He is confused (困惑的)at first but later he makes friends with spirits.

If you are not interested in these two kinds, why not try some from China? Xia Da, 32, is a great comic book artist from China. Some of her comics are about school life. Others show the beauty of Chinese culture.

What should you take with you when you take an exam? Pens, pen an eraser, a ruler, and don't forget a bottle of water.

According to a study at the British Psychological(心理学的) Society Annual Conference held in London, students who bring water into exam halls may improve their grades by up to 10 percent.

Scientists at the University of East London and the University of Westminster, did a study on 447 students. The students were studying for different degrees(学位) at the University of East

London. Only 25 percent of them entered the exam hall with something to drink.

Scientists then compared their exam results with their normal schoolwork grades. They found

that all those who had brought drinks with them got better grades by between 2 and 10 percent.

It is unclear why drinking water improves exam results. But scientists said having enough water

in our bodies and not feeling thirsty could have a positive effect on our brains. "Drinking water may also cut down on anxiety (焦虑)which had a bad effect on exam performances," said Chris Paw son, PhD of the University of East London.

"Whatever the explanation is, it is clear that students should try hard to stay hydrated(含水

的) during exams," he said.

So next time, when you are going to have a big exam, try bringing a bottle of water with you. Who knows—it may help you pass the exam!

Picture the scene: It's midnight. You're very hungry after studying for a long time. Then you see a nice pie in the fridge. Do you eat it? It seems that you shouldn't, for many reasons, including its influence on your studies.

Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us gain weight. But now a new study has shown that late— night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains—it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.

“We believe that late—night eating may affect(影响) our learning by affecting the parts of the brain that control learning and memory, "Dawn

Lon, PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles said," we believe the timing of when we eat is the main cause of the damaged (受损的) memory."

For the study, the researchers looked at mice with strict feeding plans for two weeks, the mice were either allowed to eat during the time when they are usually the most active, or during the time when they usually sleep.

The mice received the same amount of sleep and calories.

Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice. In one test, the researchers tried to find out whether the mice could remember that a room was connected to an electric shock(电击)after 24 hours had gone by.

The researchers noticed that when the mice were put in the room again hose mice that ate when they should have been sleeping were less likely(可能的) to get scared than those mice that ate during usual hours. It means that they didn't remember.

So think twice before the midnight snack— it might be bad for more than your weight.
