Book Review: Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Nowadays, we’ve been very familiar with the idea——the dual nature of the human psyche, or split personality, because it has formed the basis of many novels and has been explored in many scientific works. Compared with the coin, it is not difficult to know that everyone has two sides: one is good; one is bad.

Well, the book “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (化身博士) written by Robert Louis Stevenson that I’ve read recently, is just about a person who has a dual personality, but not so exactly to some extent. It is a mystery story, and the mystery is Mr. Hyde. Who is he? What is he? For most of the book, I’m lead to believe that the story concerns two people. Dr Jekyll, born in a rich family in the year 1830, is a kindly old doctor, with two very old friends, Utterson and Lanyon. Mr. Hyde is a smaller, younger man, with a capacity for evil which seems to emanate from him and repels everyone he meets. And yet, despite being apparent opposites in so many ways, there are clear links between the two men. Hyde gives the family of a child he has beaten a cheque signed by Jekyll. Hyde has a key to the back entrance to Jek yll’s house, and Hyde can come and go at will and give orders to Jekyll’s servants. Most disturbing of all for Mr. Utterson, who is Dr Jekyll’s lawyer, are the terms of the doctor’s will, which bequeaths all the doctor’s money to Hyde should the doctor disappear for three months. Clearly, Hyde has some sort of hold over the doctor, and the lawyer fears may murder him at some point for his money. Gradually, Hyde’s acts of cruelty become worse and worse, culminating in the murder of a famous man. During the murder, Hyde is recognised and goes on the run. At first, Utterson is pleased to read a letter from Hyde saying that he is going away for ever, but is horrified when he realises that it is in Jekyll’s handwriting. Finally, I learn the truth about the two men. They are one and the same. Jekyll has been conducting experiments to release the evil man inside his good self, but the experiments have got out of control. Mr. Hyde emerges at will and it takes stronger and stronger doses of chemicals to return to the form of Jekyll. Finally, Jekyll runs out of chemicals and Hyde emerges for ever, only to kill himself before he can be captured.

It is obvious that this story represents a concept in Western culture, that of the inner conflict of humanity's sense of good and evil. In particular the novella has been interpreted as an examination of the duality of human nature (that good and evil exists in all), and that the failure to accept this tension (to accept the evil or shadow side) results in the evil being projected onto others. Paradoxically in this argument, evil is actually committed in an effort to extinguish the perceived evil that has been projected onto the innocent victims. In Freudian Theory the thoughts and desires banished to the unconscious mind motivate the behavior of the conscious mind. If someone banishes all evil to the unconscious mind in an attempt to be wholly and completely good, it can result in the development of a Mr. Hyde-type aspect to that person's character. This failure to accept the tension of duality is related to Christian theology, where Satan's fall from Heaven is due to his refusal to accept that he is a created being (that he has a dual nature) and is not God. This is why in Christianity, pride (to consider oneself as without sin or without evil) is the greatest sin, as it is the precursor to evil itself; it also explains the Christian concept of evil hiding in the light. The novella has also been noted as "one of the best guidebooks of the Victorian era" because of its piercing description of the fundamental dichotomy of the 19th century "outward respectability and inward lust," as this period had a tendency for social hypocrisy.

It’s generally acknowledged that one of the hallmarks of the Gothic novel is its preoccupation with the “positional notion of good and evil” and the “complex confusion” that characterizes the

relationship between these two aspects of self and society. Gothic authors recognize that all human beings have the capacity for goodness, but all people also have a shadow side, and it is the degree to which one sublimates and controls his or her darker impulses that prevents one from becoming consumed with evil. In Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, the central problem of Dr. Jekyll is that he cannot accept this truism about humanity and, particularly, about himself. He is so preoccupied with separating his shadow side from the man that he wants to be that he is unable to find a way to channel his negative impulses in a manner that is adaptive for himself and for society. The failure to develop an integrated sense of self has serious implications because it leads Dr. Jekyll, in his Mr. Hyde guise, to kill people in acts of senseless violence and, ultimately, to meet his own end. I start to wonder that which is more powerful, good or evil. It certainly seems that evil triumphs in the end, since Mr. Hyde banishes Dr Jekyll. Stevenson’s skill in “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is that he deftly uses metaphors and images from science to convey the message that human beings must accept the complex wholeness of their psychological condition, even when certain aspects of such complexity prove repulsive to them.

From the opening of "Jekyll and Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson, it quickly becomes apparent to us that Dr. Jekyll is not a man who is well in his mind or his spirit. When Mr. Utterson seeks the opinion of Lanyon, a long-time friend, about Dr. Jekyll, Lanyon replies with annoyance that it was more than ten years prior when Dr. Jekyll “became too fanciful and began to go wrong, wrong in mind,” practicing a kind of “unscientific balderdash” that Lanyon cannot respect. The details offered by Lanyon in "Jekyll and Hyde" foreshadow the revelation that will eventually be made with respect to Dr. Jekyll’s dual iden tity. These details also explain the frenzied lab activities of Dr. Jekyll that are presented later in the novel and they begin to build Stevenson’s basis for discrediting such activities. Lanyon, who has been introduced to us as a man whose opinion is, like his character, respectable, is a character whose credibility is believable. Lanyon does not dismiss science as a field of study and inquiry, but he does, in this early reaction, question the misappropriation of science for questionable purposes, even though the reader does not yet know what such purposes might involve.

At this early point in “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”,though, science has not yet become the central focus of the author’s or our reader’s concern. Instead, the question that is beginning to form in our reader’s mind is more psychological in nature. Why must the shadow side of Dr. Jekyll be repressed? Even Mr. Utterson, who is not yet aware of the true relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, senses that Dr. Jekyll “is in deep waters”. Bas ed on his observations, Mr. Utterson intuits that Dr. Jekyll’s troubles must be a punishment and a penance for “the ghost of some old sin, the cancer of some concealed disgrace”. Mr. Utterson specifically mentions that Dr. Jekyll was wild in his youth, though he does not reveal any specific details that might help the reader understand why Dr. Jekyll might feel the need to dissociate himself from his shadow side. In fact, Mr. Utterson’s hunch causes him to become distracted briefly, leading him to worry bri efly about his own shadow side, as he considers any sins that may have become forgotten in the corners of his memory. Mr. Utterson concludes that he is, as stated in one of the important quotes from “fairly blameless”, but his meditation on the subject of the shadow self becomes a hint of the novel’s thematic thrust. The narrator reports that Mr. Utterson was “humbled to the dust by the many ill things he had done, and raised up again into a sober and fearful gratitude by the many that he had come so near t o doing, yet avoided”. The point here is clear and it sets up the distinction between Dr. Jekyll and the rest of the characters: While the other characters find ways

to accept and cope with their shadow sides, Dr. Jekyll cannot, and his failure to integrate the seemingly opposite aspects of himself will result in his destruction.

Although Dr. Jekyll turns to science to extricate him from what is really a moral and philosophical dilemma, Stevenson’s portrayal of scientific knowledge and processes is as an inadequate instrument for understanding human motivations, needs, and capacities. When Mr. Utterson visits Dr. Jekyll’s laboratory for the first time, the space is described, in one of the important quotes from "Jekyll and Hyde" as a dark, “dingy windowless structure”; like Jekyll’s very mind and soul, light cannot penetrate and illuminate this space where Jekyll is working so hard, paradoxically, to eliminate darkness. Also, like Dr. Jekyll’s psyche, the laboratory is cluttered and prevents easy navigation in the space and precludes visitors from entering comfortably. It is within this space, though, that the tortured doctor has been titrating a drug that he concocted in order to separate his negative self, Hyde, from the man that Dr. Jekyll wants to be. Interestingly, this drug works at first, separating the good Dr. Jekyll from his evil alter ego, Mr. Hyde. Like all drugs, however, the mixture that allows Dr. Jekyll to dissociate in this manner is needed in higher and higher doses, and eventually it loses its potency and efficacy. There are limits, then, to the ability of science to separate man from his true nature.

It is Mr. Utterson, a lawyer by trade, who diagnoses Dr. Jekyll’s malady, which further reinforces the idea that science and scientific principles are ineffective for dealing with natures of the human soul and spirit. After learning about Dr. Jekyll’s obsessive, desperate pursuit of chemicals from the pharmacist which he uses to manufacture his drug, Mr. Utterson remarks that Dr. Jekyll is described, in one of the important quotes from “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyd e”“plainly seized with one of those maladies that both torture and deform the sufferer”. This malady not only causes the “alteration of his voice; and leads to the mask and his avoidance of his friends; and his eagerness to find this drug,” but also deforms and corrupts Dr. Jekyll’s psyche and capacity for normal human functioning. Mr. Utterson asserts that no scientific training or knowledge was necessary to arrive at this diagnosis; he procla ims to Dr. Jekyll’s butler, “There is my explanation; it is sad enough… and appalling to consider; but it is plain and natural”. Later, when Mr. Poole explains his own impressions of Mr. Hyde to Mr. Utterson, he too asserts the value of emotion-based knowledge as opposed to information discerned through rational process of science. He remarks regarding science in one of the important quotes from “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", “I know it's not evidence, Mr. Utterson; I'm book-learned enough for that; but a man has his feelings, and I give you my bible-word….”. Dr. Jekyll’s greatest problem, of course, is that he seeks relief for a plain and natural condition by pursuing cures that are not at all plain or natural. By disconnecting himself from his feelings, by disavowing and denying them and relying instead upon scientific principles, Dr. Jekyll secures his fate as a man who is a “self-destroyer”.

What is almost more important than the details of science that Stevenson does include are those details that he omits? Our readers never learn, for example, of Dr. Jekyll’s academic or professional credentials, nor do us ever observe Dr. Jekyll with patients. Dr. Jekyll is never observed conducting experiments, however misdirected they may be. Instead, all of the descriptions of Dr. Jekyll in his laboratory are devoted to his obsession with mixing the drug that gives him a release from his psychological torture. We see, then, that Dr. Jekyll never uses science for any noble purpose; rather, he appropriates its methods and its alleged benefits only for his own ends. The lack of details in any quotes from "Jekyll and Hyde" in this regard are not a mere oversight on Stevenson’s part; rather, they are a carefully crated set of omissions that are intended

to direct our reader’s attention to the limitations of science.

The cool and distanced logic and rationalism of science, so popular in the generations preceding the Gothic writers, is contested in a novel such as “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. Although scientific processes, science in general, symbols, and metaphors are an important part of such texts, they are ultimately de-centered; science lacks the authority, wisdom, and insight that experience and emotion can provide. Unfortunately, those characters that are enthralled by what they believe to be the potential of science are thwarted. Gothic authors such as Stevenson punish the characters who, like Dr. Jekyll, cleave to science, even when it becomes clear that science cannot extricate them from their psychological needs and the dilemmas that they confront as a result. It is only through reflection upon one’s own experiences and thoughtful decision-making that one can hope to integrate the shadow side with the person we believe and want to be our true selves.

There is no denying that Dr Jekyll himself is a typical tragic person. Although, as a person, everyone does have two sides, not all the people are like Dr Jekyll, who can’t control himself. However, recently, under the rapid development of great pressure, more and more people become “Dr Jekyll”, showing the good side in front of the people when they are working, and releasing bad side in pub when they are in free time. It is not good to our healthy both in mind and in body. Imagine every person goes evil, how could the world be? I’m ninety-nine point nine percent sure, in that case, “2012”, the fatal end of the world, won’t be a lie. Human will be destroyed not by natural disaster but the evil inside human. But how can we deal with this serious problem, the inner conflict of good and evil? First, we should correct the idea that we can kill off the evil side. Instead, we should acknowledge it, and then make the good side power by developing good habits step by step. We are educated citizens living in this beautiful planet. We are the hope in the future. We know what is right and what is wrong, and we have the obligations to regulate our behavior in accordance with the code of ethics. When we are doing things, we should consider whether it is morally right. Make this consideration a habit. Second, pay more attention to self-cultivation and adjusting attitude at any time in any place. In the course of human events, we have experienced the dark days of hard-working, when people work the whole day and the whole night like a crow without a short time of rest. Such a horrible life has gone forever. However, nowadays there are still a majority number of people concentrate almost all their energy on their work in order to survive or raise family in this complex and competitive society. There is no doubt that, in these situations, optimism and good attitude are critical to our healthy development. They can help us confront and overcome difficulties in our work or in our lives. With good attitude, we won’t nurse jealousy against someone who achieve great triumph on work; meanwhile, with optimism, we will encourage ourselves to fight for success. But there is another question: how to become optimism? In my opinion, there are two ways. On one hand, read a vast number of positive motivational books. The more you read, the stronger your heart will be. On the other hand, as the old saying goes, “playing with the good person, you will be good; playing with the bad person, you will be bad”, so make friends with well-spirit excellent persons as many as possible. You will be gradually influenced by them and finally changed to be a welcomed person. Third, release bad emotions as soon as possible. Unhealthy emotions can not be avoided, but we can release it through some healthy ways, such as running, playing sports, talking with others and so on. The more depression we hide, the more split personalities we tend to have. It is just the stimulation of the depression that causes many people totally become evil. Last but not least, don’t emphasize too much on the gain and loss of personal interests. In this colorful world, there exist various kinds of personal

interests, especially pecuniary interest. As Darwin said, “Natural selection, survival of the fittest”, it is a highly competitive society. It is normal for people to compete each other in the sake of their own interests. However, the one that cares more about his own interests rather than others may eventually pay for it. We are human beings; we stay in the same planet; so we should care and help each other to improve together. Through the three ways that I’ve mentioned above, I believe people can confront their inner sides rightly.

I really learn a lot from the book “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. It is a warning for us to review our behavior. The future is bright, but road is tortuous. In order to grow healthily, we’d better drop the bad behavior and bad attitude. Every thing can be settled, only if we have the determination.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde《

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde《化身博士》大意及读后感 General Idea(大意): Henry Jekyll was a doctor. He liked the hard work and other people had a good opinion of him. But on the other hand, he enjoyed the wild night life so much. He learned that man has two sides --- a good side and an evil side. He found that some chemicals had a great power when he was doing some scientific work. That could change a person’s body --- they can change its shape, and make it bigger or smaller. Jekyll used it to make himself turn into another person --- Hyde, an evil little man. Hyde did a lot of bad things. And finally Jekyll found that the medicine does not have enough power to turn himself back because the evil side of him had got bigger and bigger. Finally, he killed himself because he could not get rid of Hyde. Feelings and thoughts(读后感): I think most of people have a double life. But I don’t mean that a person had two sides, a good side and a bad one. Everybody has the desire of getting something, it is normal. But if we don’t control it when it get bigger and bigger, we will lose ourselves. Beautiful Sentences(优美句子): I seemed to have a good future in front of me. Everything looked bright and good. In this way, my life become a lie. Slowly it became clear to me that man is not just one person. He is two people. It seems wrong that we have to live with both person in the same body. The memory of those terrible hours as Hyde frightened me most. I was terribly afraid. Not afraid of a murderer’s death, but afraid of being Hyde.

The story of Dr Jekyll is quite famous around the world, however, Dr Jekyll himself is a typical tragic person. He is a kind and wise doctor in front of the public, but might not wise enough to adjust himself. As an old saying goes: every coin has two sides. Dr Jekyll also has his own negative side, which finally become Mr. Hide. Mr. Hide is always hunger for violence, and all the bad things he did tell us that too. People may treat him as a criminal, but to me, he is just unable to find a way to abreact. It really doesn’t matter if you are a man lives in 19th century or comes from stone age, we are all people, we all have feelings, we all have our own Mr. or Ms Hide, the only question is, can you find a way to maintain your mental health? Maybe we can’t afford to have our own psychological consultant, but we CAN play games to relax ourselves, or realize any wildest dream in this virtual world. Imaging this, once our Dr Jekyll has some evil minds, he can turn to his computer for help. Maybe he can play some action games to satisfy his desire for “passion”, just like people today.

写于1886年,英文名为《The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde》,直译为“杰基尔博士和海德先生的奇异故事”。

1 The mysterious door Mr Utterson the lawyer was a quiet, serious man.Hewas shy with strangers and afraid of showing his feelings.Among friends, however, his eyes shone with kindnessand goodness. And,although this goodness never found itsway into his conversation,it showed itself in his way of life.He did not allow himself many enjoyable things in life.He ateand drank simply and, although he enjoyed the theatre, hehad not been to a play for twenty years. However,he wasgentler towards other men' s weaknesses, and was alwaysready to help rather than blame them.As a lawyer,he was often the last good person that evil-doers met on their way toprison,or worse. These people often carried with them memories of his politeness and fairness.
