ⅡTranslate the following passage into English.

In the house where I grew up, we had a room we called the library. It wasn’t a real library, of course, it was just a small den dominated by a television set. But there were bookshelves built into all four walls, and hundreds of books –hardback books with spines of many colors –surrounded us in that room. The books, collected by my parents and grandparents throughout their lifetimes, were a part of my childhood.

My generation –the generation that came of age in the 1950s and 1960s –may be the last one to know that feeling, the feeling of being surrounded by millions of words; those words were the products of years of work by authors famous and obscure. For now in the midst of the 1970s, we are seeing a subtle but unmistakable turning away from such things. The houses of America, I fear, may soon include no room for libraries. The hardcover book –that symbol of the permanence of thought, the handing down of wisdom from one age to the next –may be a new addition to our list of endangered species.

Movie experts say Walt Disney was responsible for the development of the art of animation. Disney’s artists tried to put life into every drawing. That meant they had to feel all the emotions of the cartoon creatures: happiness, sadness, anger, fear. The artists looked at themselves in a mirror and expressed each emotion: a smile, tears, a red face, wide-open eyes. Then they drew that look on the face of each cartoon creature.

Disney’s art of animation reached its highest poin t in 1940 with the movie Pinocchio. The story is about a wooden toy that comes to life as a little boy. Disney’s artists drew two-and-a-half-million pictures to make Pinocchio. The artists drew flat pictures. Yet they created a look of space and solid objects. Pinocchio was a imaginary world, yet it looked very real.

Ⅱ.Translate the following passage into Chinese.

In the 20th century, the American Dream had its challenges. The Depression caused widespread hardship during the Twenties and Thirties, and was almost a reverse of the dream for those directly affected. Racial instability did not disappear, and in some parts of the country racial violence was almost commonplace.

Since the end of World War Ⅱ, young American families have sought to live in relative comfort and stability in the suburbs that were built up around major cities. This led to the rise of the relatively conservative 1950s, when many pursued the ―perfect family‖ as a part or consequence of the American Dream. This period was shattered by a new generation of young people who embraced the hippie values of the 1960s, denying traditional values such as the American Dream. Though the drive for it waned during those years, the Dream itself has never fully died out.

Ⅱ. Translate the following passage into Chinese.

Superstition is a part of British culture today. Although superstition was more alive hundred years ago, there are still many superstitious people around now, both young and old.

All superstition has grown from something, since there is no smoke withou fire. Who was the first one to decide that opening an umbrella in a house is bad luck? Who was the first to walk under a ladder and suffer the consequences? Who hung a horseshoe the wrong way up, smashed a mirror and spilled the salt? Who first branded Friday 13th as a day on which luck would run out?

Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth century life was hazardous, and the central feature of day-to-day existence was preoccupation with finding explanations for fortune and misfortune. Religious, diseases and fire might have been the most essential elements in the background of the beliefs of superstition is still with us as a tradition.

II.Translate the following passage into Chinese.

Whenever women’s liberation is mentioned, there are often two reactions. One is that this is just a bunch of frustrated women. The other is that this is something that is a wh ite thing, which doesn’t concern black women.

The truth is that the exploitation of black women goes deeper than that of white women.Unity of all black women is needed to push fou such for such demands as self-determination,equal pay, free abortion and

child-care centers. We should realize the need for the women of the black nation to have a liberation movement of women as part of our movement for total liberation of our people.

The black man has been led to believe that office and skilled jobs are given to the black woman by the white capitalists to make the black man feel inferior. In reality, there aren’t enough jobs for everyone, and the black woman suffers the most from low pay and unemployment.

II Translate the following passage into English.

Most full-time students at American universities must have health insurance. This is because health costs in the United States are high. Colleges are not able to pay the costs if students suffer serious accidents or sickness. Many American colleges have health centers where doctors and nurses treat students’ medical problems. This service may be included in the cost of attending college. Health insurance is usually needed for extra services. Students may already be pr otected under their parents’ health insurance polices. If not, many colleges offer their own insurance plans.

Students also can buy independent insurance policies from insurance companies. The details of such policies differ, depending on where the student lives. Usually, these policies pay for doctor visits, treatment of injuries and hospital costs.

All in all, people in the United States are responsible for their own medical costs. These can be extremely high in cases of serious illness or accidents. The purpose of health insurance is to make sure that these costs will be paid for.

However intricate the way in which animals communicate with each other, they do not indulge in anything that deserves the name of conversation. 1.And it is an activity only of humans. And conversation is an activity which is found only among human being. Sociable [?so???bl] adj.随和的,好交际的,友善的friendly or agreeable, eapecially in an easy, informal way(用书) intricate (adj) : hard to follow or understand because full of puzzling parts, details,or relationships错综复杂的;难以理解的,难懂的 Indulge: 任凭自己沉溺于……;耽于to allow yourself to have or do sth that you like, eapecially sth that is considered bad for you ----indulge in sth, indulge yourself. 例:Women do not indulge in to the same extent as men. deserve: 2.The charm of conversation is that it does not really start from anywhere, and no one has any idea where it will go as it meander s or leap s and sparkle s or just glow s. The enemy of good conversation is the person who has “something to say.”Conversation is not for making a point. Argument may often be a part of it, but the purpose of the argument is not to convince. There is no winning in conversation. In fact, the best conversationalist s are those who are prepared to lose. Suddenly they see the moment for one of their best anecdote s, but in a flash the conversation has moved on and the opportunity is lost. They are ready to let it go.

Face to face with Hurricane Camille中英笔记

Face To Face With Hurricane Camille 1John Koshak,Jr., knew Hurricane Camille would be bad. Radio and television warnings had sounded throughout that Sunday. Last August 17, as Camille lashed northwestward across the Gulf of Mexico. It was certain to pummel Gulfport, Miss., where the Koshaks lived. Along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, nearly 150,000 people fled inland to safer ground. But like thousands of others in the coastal communities, John was reluctant to abandon his home unless the family—his wife, Janis and their seven children, aged 3 to 11—was clearly endangered. lash (v.): move quickly or violently猛烈冲击;拍打 pummel (n.): beat or hit with repeated blows, esp.with the fist(尤指用拳头)连续地打 2 Trying to reason out the best course of action, he talked with his father and mother, who had moved into the ten-room house with the Koshaks a month earlier from California. Four years earlier Hurricane Betsy had demolished his former home a few miles west of Gulfport (Koshak had moved his family to a motel for the night).

Marrakech George Orwell 1 As the corpse went past the flies left the restaurant table in a cloud and rushed after it, but they came back a few minutes later. 2 The little crowd of mourners -- all men and boys, no women--threaded their way across (break ones way)the market place between the piles of pomegranates and the taxis and the camels, walling a short chant over and over again. What really appeals to the flies is that the corpses here are never put into coffins, they are merely wrapped in a piece of rag and carried on a rough wooden bier on the shoulders of four friends. When the friends get to the burying-ground they hack an oblong hole a foot or two deep, dump the body in it and fling over it a little of the dried-up, lumpy earth, which is like broken brick. No gravestone, no name, no identifying mark of any kind. The burying-ground is merely a huge waste of hummocky earth, like a derelict building-lot. After a month or two no one can even be certain where his own relatives are buried. 1. 3 When you walk through a town like this -- two hundred thousand inhabitants of whom at least twenty thousand own literally (really;真实的)nothing except the rags they stand up in-- when you see how the people live, and still more how easily they die, it is always difficult to believe that you are walking among human beings. All colonial empires are in reality founded upon this fact. The people have brown faces--besides, there are so many of them! Are they really the same flesh (mankind人类)as your self? Do they even have names? Or are they merely a kind of undifferentiated(无差别的)brown stuff, about as individual as bees or coral insects? (三个疑问句)They rise out of the earth(出生贫寒,metaphor),they sweat and starve(alliteration;) for a few years, and then they sink back into the nameless mounds of the graveyard and nobody notices that they are gone. And even the graves themselves soon fade back into the soil. Sometimes, out for a walk as you break your way(threaded their way) through the prickly pear(刺梨), you notice that it is rather bumpy(not even)underfoot, and only a certain regularity in the bumps tells you that you are walking over skeletons.//part1:the coprse scene 3.
