Pleasant Dreams

Dreams may be more important than sleep. Some people don’t need very much sleep. But we all need to dream, scientists say.

Dreams take up about one quarter of our sleeping time. People have several dreams each night. Dreams are like short movies. They are usually in color. Some dreams are like old movies. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something. Dreaming may be a way of trying to find an answer.

Some people get new ideas about their work from dreams. They could have been thinking about their work all day. These thoughts can carry over into dreams.

Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can’t remember the dream. Dreams can disappear quickly from memory.

Too much dreaming can be harmful. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work when we dream. That is why we may have a long sleep and still wake up tired.

1. The main idea of the story is that ______.

A. people need to dream

B. people like to sleep

C. dreams are like movies

D. dreams are usually long

2. Another title for the story could be ______.

Go and watch the baby when he is asleep, see how his chest rises and falls, then rises and falls again.

The Right Way to Sit

If you are writing or studying, it makes very much difference where the light comes from. People who use books and pens every day have to be specially careful about the way the light shines on their work.

Every house gets its light either from daylight through windows which is the very best to use or from the lamps or electricity; but whichever kind of light it is, the way it slants towards our books or our work is a matter of great importance to the eyes.

Take a book, stand with your back toward the window, and try to read. Y our shadow falls all over the page and makes it almost as bad for your eyes as if you were in a dark room.

Now turn around and face the window. The page is in the shadow again, while the bright light is in your eyes.

Try standing with your right side toward the window. This is very good for reading, but if you were writing, the shadow would fall across the page and bother you a little.

There is just one other way: stand with your left side to the window. Now everything is perfect for reading and for writing, too.

Whatever kind of light is in the room, the rule about the right way to sit is always the same.

1. When reading or writing, people should pay special attention to ______.

A. the book they are reading

B. the paper they are writing on

C. the way the light shines on their page

D. the kind of light

2. ______ makes much difference to the eyes.

A. The daylight through the windows

B. The light from the lamps or electricity

C. The way the light slants towards our books or our work

D. The way a house gets its light

3. It is bad for your eyes when you read a book ______.

A. with your back toward the window

B. facing the window

C. with your right side toward the window

D. both A and B

4. Everything is OK for reading and writing when you ______.

A. stand with your left side toward the window

B. stand with your right side to the window

C. sit with your right side to the window

D. sit with your back toward the window

“Wash every day and you’ll die young, my son!” People often said those words; long ago, of course. Napoleon’s wife had new clothes every month, instead of a bath. (“It’s quicker,” She always said). Rich people did not often have a bath. They washed their hands and faces, but not their bodies. Many poor people did not wash at all. A young man once said to a doctor: “Soap and water have never touched my body.” (And the doctor answered. “That’s true. I know…”)

And this is true; they just did not like a bath.

Modern young women work as hairdressers. They wash and then “dress” other women’s hair. That is their job, and they like it. Y oung hairdressers sometimes wash dirty heads on a busy day! Fire fighting is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save people’s lives. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone else in the family. Such as stairways and emergency exits, but no lifts. From the lower floors of building, escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way to get out from a window with the least chance of serious injury. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the fingertips will have a drop of about 6 feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way down than to stay in a burning building. Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked into the room. On the second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those which open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury. Cigarette Smoking

Americans smoke six thousand million cigarettes every year, that is, every person smokes about 4195 cigarettes a year in the country of 18 years of age or more. It has calculated that 51% of American men smoke while 34% of American women do so.

Since 1930, scientific studies have shown time and again that smoking does great harm to one’s health and that it will shorten one’s life.

Cigarette smoking is believed, to most research workers in this field, a very important cause in the development of cancer of the lungs and the cancer of the throat and is believed to have much to do with some other kinds of cancers. Cigarette smokers suffer from the illness of the heart more often than those who don’t smoke. But strange, yet true, women are thought to be less affected, because when women smoke, they usually don’t breathe in the smoke so deeply. Most of the doctors and researchers say, “Give up smoking. If you don’t smoke—don’t start!”

Filters are required now to make smoking a bit safer, but they can only reduce, not get rid of, its poison.

But there are still a number of doctors and research workers who are less sure of the effect of cigarette smoking on health. They believe that cancers of the lungs, the throat and so on may also be caused by atmospheric pollution, or chemical poison that is now being used by farmers in large

quantities to destroy plant pests and small animals.
