According to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average weekly income for a woman in 1983 was $ 260. For the same year, men had average weekly earning of $ 393. For some people, these figures are clear evidence that there is still sex discrimination in the area of pay in the situation, we find that certain occupations seem to be primarily female while others seem to be primarily male occupations. In the medical and legal professions, for example, statistics show that 85% of all doctors and lawyers are men ( although this situation is changing). More than 90% of all engineers are men. Women, however, have been the majority for a long time in other occupations. For example, 99 out of every 100 secretaries are women, and 95% of all nurses are female. From these statics, it is clear that women tend to enter certain occupations and not others, The occupations which they enter are often in service industries and often have one common feature: : They do not pay well. It can be argued that this is the principal reason for the difference in earnings between men and women. In addition, we can expect the pay situation to change in the future, because more qualified women are beginning careers in medicine, law, business, scientific research, and engineering.

D.Women and men will exchange their jobs in most areas.

8. In the opinion of the writer, why do women still earn less money than men?

A.Some professions are not suitable for women.

B.The principle of “ equal pay for equal work” isn’t observed.

D.Women are often in the majority in low-paying jobs.

In most people the left side of the brain deals with such things as logic, language, reasoning, numbers, and analysis, the so-called” academic” activities. While the left side is engaged in these activities, the right side is in the “ alpha wave” or resting state. The right side if the brain deals with rhythm, music, visual imagines and imagination, color, parallel processing, day-dreaming, face recognition, and pattern or map recognition.

Research showed that when people were encouraged to develop a mental area they had previously considered weak, this development, rather than detracting from other areas, seemed to produce an effect in which all areas of mental performance improved.

At first glance history seemed to deny this finding, for most of the “ great brains” appeared very irregular in mental terms: Einstein and other scientists seemed to be mostly”left-brains”dominant, while Picasso and other artists and musicians appeared to be “ right_brain” dominant.

A more thorough investigation, however, discovered some fascinating facts: Einstein failed mathematics at elementary school, but numbered, among his other activities, violin playing, art, sailing, and imagination games.

Einstein gave credit to his imagination games for many of his more significant scientific insights. While day-dreaming on a hill on a summer day, he imagined riding sunbeams to outer space, and upon finding himself returned, “illogically”, to the surface of the sun, he realized that the universe must indeed be curved, and that his previous” logical “ training was incomplete. The numbers, formulas(公式) and words he wrapped around this new image gave us the theory of relativity__ a left and right brain combination.

Similarly the great artists turned out to be “ both-brained”. Rather than notebooks filled with stories of drunken parties, and paint splashed on randomly to produce masterpieces, a good example of just how an artist works was found as follows:

Up at 6 a.m. Spent seventeenth day on painting six of the latest series. Mixed four parts orange with two parts yellow to produce color combination which I placed in upper left-hand corner of canvas, to act in visual opposition to spiral structures in lower right-hand corner, producing desired balance in eye of the perceiver.

11. The right side of the brain deals with_____

A. analysis

B. language

C. reasoning

D. day-dreaming

12.The right brain activity that Einstein was good at was______

A. mathematics

B. violin playing

13.Einstein gave credit for many of his significant scientific insights to_____

14.One of the imagination games that helped Einstein develop the theory of relativity, was _____.

A. kite flying

B. a trip to outer space and back

C. sailing a boat

A. only left brain activity

B. Only right brain activity

D. a balance of art and logic

When I was studying at Y ale, some phenomena puzzled me greatly. I found that Chinese students or Asian students were very polite in class while American students often interrupted the professor, asking questions and dominating the discussion. The Chinese students were not as aggressive as American students.

I was impressed by the role of the professor in the seminar(讨论会). The professor didn’t act as an authority, giving final conclusions, but as a researcher looking for answers to questions together with the students. One linguistic(语言的) feature of his interacting with his students was that he used many modal(情态的) verbs—far more than I did in Beiwai. When answering questions, he usually said, “This is my personal opinion and it could be wrong.” or “Y ou could be right, but you might find thi s point of view also interesting.”

In China, authorities are always supposed to give wise decisions and correct reactions. Therefore, students always expect the professor to give an answer to the question. I still remember how frustrated they were when foreign teachers did not provide such an answer. Their expectations from authorities are much higher than that of American students. Once the Chinese students got the answer, they were sure about it.

Education in China is valued for united thinking. I remember American teachers who taught in our university complaining about the fact that Chinese students uniformly expressed the same idea in their English composition. The examinations in America usually do not test a student’s ability to memorize the material but his ability to analyze and solve problems. Education in America is valued not only as a means to obtain employment but as a process of enhancing critical thinking.

16.In the USA, when the students are in class, ____.

A. a Chinese student tends to be very active

B. an American student likes to make trouble

C. a Chinese student likes to puzzle the teacher

D. an American student tends to be vigorous

17.A teacher in the USA prefers to ____ when he answers questions.

A. be very sincere

B. be very direct

C. be very self-confident

D. be very indifferent

18.What is the opinion of the author concerning the difference of teaching methods between China and the USA?

A. He thinks that Chinese teaching methods can make students learn more.

B. He holds that the major purpose of Chinese teaching methods is to improve students’ remembrance.

C. He thinks that American teaching is ability-oriented.

D. He holds that American teachers hate to give a test.

19.The author thinks that the relationship between the student and the teacher is ____.

A. more intimate in China

B. closer in China

C. looser in USA

D. more harmonious in USA

20.The education in USA may produce some ____ graduates.

A. talkative

B. conventional

C. creative

D. imaginative

Of course, it is possible. You can convey your moods and intentions to one another without words, because all human beings share a large number of common visual signals. These signals are as effective as words are during communication. However, in daily life when people talk with others in their native language, they are not aware that they are using these signals to express their thoughts at the same time. These signals are called body language. Paying a little attention to one’s gestures when that person is talking, we can understand more than by only hearing one’s words. Wordless communication acts to qualify the words. The gestures of the head play a key role in body language. The vertical head movements, called nods, signify their agreement. It is very interesting that this gesture has been used by people born deaf and blind. No doubt, it strongly suggests that affirmative nodding may be an inborn action for the human species—a pattern of body language designed by our genes. The movements of eyes and eyebrows are as important as head movements in body Language, but there are many differences among nations in using this pattern of body language. Americans are very subtle about eye movements. During their conversation, eye movements may have several meanings. For instance, people avoid looking into another’s eyes for more than a few seconds because it may be thought of as a sign of disrespect. In England, however, staring at the speaker attentively may be considered as nothing more than a sign of interest. English people also like to blink their eyes occasionally during the conversation as a signal of agreement. Besides the gestures of the head or the movements of the eyes and eyebrows, the action of arms, hands and legs also are a large part of body language. Extending one’s arm and shaking hands with others is a greeting in both formal and informal cases. This part of body language might be traced back to primitive tribes. Early human beings established a major division of labor, with the male hunter leaving the group for some time, then returning home with the kill. Before he left and after he came back body contact was made; This consisted of a total embrace with much hugging, patting, squeezing, and even weeping. After many thousands of years, this kind of greeting has developed into the present customs, such as handshaking—one of the important elements in the modern body language dictionary. Like handshaking, there are still many other forms of body language presented by hands. Raising one’s hand and making a circle with his thumb and forefinger signals that something is OK. Clasped hands raised above the head, a traditional picture adopted by sportsmen after winning a fight, is a display of triumph that grows out of a surge of feeling following a victory. Waving one’s hands permits a speaker to make his words more powerful and vigorous. In addition to hand gestures, there are times when a person says something with his legs as well as with his head and eyes. The leg gestures often reflect one’s attitude towards something or someone that person is with. For example, if you pay a little attention, you will notice that when one is impatient listening to someone, his foot might beat the floor constantly and restlessly, as if it had its own life. In such a case, although he says not a word, in fact his body gesture reveals nearly everything. The same thing will happen when a person sits with someone whom that person dislikes. In this situation not only will his legs move from side to side, but also he will change the way his legs are crossed frequently. These postures reflect one’s uncomfortable feeling. According to the above facts, body language has offered a more reliable way to understand one’s mind by means of gestures. It is just like Sigmund Freud once wrote: “No mortal can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he talks with his fingertips.” Body language is a communication tool. Like English, French, Spanish, and other languages in the world, though body language is soundless and wordless, once you understand it, you will feel the world is bigger than you realized. 1. When people communicate with each other, the visual signals cannot express their intentions clearly. A. True B. False 2. During communication, people are conscious of body language to understand others more deeply. A. True B. False 3. The gestures of the head are only used by the people born deaf and blind. A. True B. False 4. The movement of eyes and eyebrows are the same in meaning all over the world. A. True B. False 5. In England blink their eyes occasionally to show their agreement.
