A

It was the summer of 1998 and I was trying to study hard for my engineering degree. I went up to the roof for a break and watched people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day. But as I looked into the distance, I discovered a series of three or four big waves racing towards the shore. They must have been at least four meters high and were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. From the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I held my bodyboard (冲浪板) and shouted at a stranger to call the lifeguards (救生员). My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered two people floating about 400 meters out. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I didn't think twice about trying to save them. When we finally reached them 10 minutes later, they were almost lifeless, pale and motionless. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths. We put them on our boards, patted their faces to wake them up, telling them to be strong, all the while swimming hard to keep ourselves afloat.

Thirty minutes later, I began to feel a bit afraid and tired. Finally, a small boat with three lifeguards headed towards us. When the boat pulled up, we helped push the couple on board, only to be told that there was no room for us. It seemed pretty unprofessional (不专业的) to leave us there—we were a couple of miles from the shore.

I didn't feel like a hero. I'm sure that anyone who could swim would have done the same thing.

2.Upon getting close to them, the writer found that the two people ________.

A.had been saved by others

B.were struggling in the sea

(2016·洛阳市统一考试)Some people like modern art, while others say that is rubbish. But a cleaner who works in the Tate Gallery in London isn't able to tell the difference. The woman, whose name isn't known, mistook a work of art by the German painter Gustav Metzger for a bag of rubbish, and

threw it out with other bags. The plastic bag, which contained pieces of paper and cardboard, was later recovered outside the gallery, but the artist thought that it was too damaged to be put on show again. 78-year-old Mr Metzger explained that the exhibit, which he said was a copy of a similar work he had created in 1960, was meant to show that all art is temporary and “finite (有限的)”. Embarrassed officials at the museum said that they had had to call a meeting with cleaners to explain which things should not be touched. They would not say whether Mr Metzger would be paid any compensation for the incident. However, to make absolutely sure the same thing would not happen again, they decided to cover Mr Metzger's work every evening with a coloured cloth. In this way the cleaners arriving after the gallery had been closed to the general public would realize they should not touch it.

This is not the first time that museum cleaners have had trouble distinguishing exhibits from rubbish. In 2001, in another London gallery, a cleaner threw away a work by the well-known British artist Damien Hirst. It was an arrangement of empty beer bottles, coffee cups, and overflowing ashtrays, which were meant to indicate the chaos in the life of an artist.

However, cleaners don't always throw things away — sometimes they clean them! This was the case with a dirty bath, which was on show in a gallery in Germany. Without asking what the bath was doing in the gallery, the cleaners simply scrubbed it clean.

1.The officials of the museum covered Mr Metzger's work so that ________.

A.the visitors couldn't get close in the evening

B.they could get recovered soon

C.the cleaners wouldn't make the same mistake

D.they would return to normal

2.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.People have different opinions on modern art.

B.Mr Metzger would be paid much compensation.

C.A work of Damien Hirst was thrown away by a cleaner in 2001.

D.Some modern work is about the chaos of an artist's life.

3.The last paragraph is written to show that________.

A.cleaners often make exhibits as clean as possible

B.cleaners can't always differ exhibits from rubbish

C.exhibits are usually difficult to clean

D.exhibits are not always so beautiful

4.What's the best title of the passage?

A.Cleaners mistake modern art for rubbish

B.Modern art shouldn't be cleaned

C.What makes a great work of art

D.Cleaners don't always throw things away

根据第二段中的“However, to make absolutely sure the same thing would not happen again, they decided to cover ... with a coloured cloth.”

You’ve flown halfway around the world; you’ve sniffed out this place that nobody in Falongland or Thailand seems to have ever heard of; so what on earth is there to do here? You consider this question as you sink into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand.

It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. By the time you found the bus station and got yourself sorted out, it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.

Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin, about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the west side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been their purpose all along. There’s an apparent laziness that surrounds you here. It’s what this place offers, and it’s free of charge. The small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything down. You settle into your beach chair in preparation for a long rest. You sit there and watch the sea.

It’s early afternoon, so the cook comes out and asks what you’d like to eat this evening. Before long he’s rushed off to the market to buy the ingredient s for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to order. No menu here. There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue sea. There’s no street noise. The only sounds are the murmurs of nature.

For now you just count your blessings (福祉), listing them in the sand with your toe (脚趾). You don’t have to worry about being late for work. You don’t have to do anything.

The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon (地平线), slowly narrowing to nothingness only to re-emerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it

covers the chair beneath you. Sand to your left and sand to your right; it’s unbroken, endless. No start, no end, just sand, sun, and peace. Step off it, and you re-enter the world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry.

Normally you’re the type who can’t sit still for more than ten minutes, but you’re on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world.

“How could it take me so long to find it?” you wonder.

1. When the author first went to Huaplee Beach, ______.

A. he found it unworthwhile

B. he failed to sort himself out

C. he became sensitive to smell

D. he had difficulty in finding it

2. What is special about the food service at Huaplee Beach?

A. No menu.

B. Free food.

C. Self service.

D. Quick delivery.

3. In the author’s opinion, a tourist can enjoy Huaplee Beach most when he ______.

A. sits in a beach chair

B. forgets his daily routine

C. plans a detailed schedule

D. draws pictures in the sand

4. What does the author imply by his question at the end of the passage?

A. He shouldn’t have counted his blessings.

B. He should have understood the wonder of nature.

C. He shouldn’t have spent so much time on the trip.

D. He should have come to the place earlier.

D正确。

2. A。 It’s early afternoon, so t he cook comes out and asks what you’d like to eat this evening. Before long he’s rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to order. No menu here.

Normally you’re the type who can’t sit still for more than ten minutes, but you’re on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world.

(2016·兰州质检)Last Saturday I went to the library as usually. At about noon, I was enjoying my reading near a lake while suddenly I hear someone crying for help. I went up to see what was happened. I was shocking to find a little child struggling in the water in the distance while many peoples were standing by without doing anything. Without any hesitation, I had pushed through the crowd as I took off my coat, but jumped into the water quickly. I managed to reach him and carried him back to safety. To his great relief, the kid was saved.

I was proud what I had done. I hope everyone can give a hand when someone else is in need.

如:suggest(建议), insist(坚持要求),demand(要求)、ask(请求)等后接的宾语从句中都 要用虚拟语气。善于归纳近义词、同义词,如:在复习join的用法时,能够联系join in,take part in,join sb in归纳复习之后,要做 对应练习。

1.From talking robots and video phones to rovers on Mars, technology has become so advanced that the previously impossible seems to occur on a daily basis. And yet – we still have no cure for the common cold. Why can’t we st op the common cold? According to Peter Barlow, a scientist at Edinburgh Napier University in the UK, the main challenge lies in the many different types of cold viruses that are produced by the rhinoviruses (鼻病毒). There are at least 160 types. They mutate (突变) so easily that they quickly become resistant to drugs, or learn to hide from our immune systems. In other words, a single cure isn’t likely to work on every type of cold. However, researchers from Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, have found a possible answer. They discovered a protein that the viruses need. Without it, they can’t spread inside your body. To identify the gene which produces the specific protein needed by the viruses, researchers used a gene-editing technique to test all genes in the human genome (基因组) one by one for thousands of cells. These modified (改变的) cells were then exposed to a range of enteroviruses(肠病毒), including the rhinoviruses which cause the common cold. All the viruses were unable to replicate (复制) inside cells without a gene that produces a specific protein, called methyltransferase SETD3. Then, they tested genetically modified mice, which were completely unable to produce the protein. The mice were able to live healthy, normal lives wit hout the protein. “Lacking that gene protected the mice completely from viral infection.” associate professor Jan Carette, from Stanford, told the BBC. “These mice would always die, but they survived and we saw a very strong reduction in viral replication and very strong protection.” Carette said the plan is to find a drug which can temporarily suppress (抑制) the protein, instead of producing genetically modified humans. “We have identified a fantastic target that all enteroviruses and rhinoviruses require and depend on. Take that away and the virus really has no chance.” said Carette. “This is a really good first step – the second step is to have a chemical that mimics (模拟) this genetic deletion.” he added.
